SCENE X
This scene would be towards the end of the episode, after the
family has traveled through a few time periods and learned
about the medium of exchange. Ethan has split off from the
group in order to stop the Monster (as introduced in previous
scenes) from being created. Grandma, Emily and Randall are
trying to track him down and stop him from messing up the
timeline too badly (as such things create wormholes,
alternative dimensions and perhaps natural disasters or
something.)
Grandma, Randal and Emily all arrive. The screen tag reads:
1901.
GRANDMA
Whoops! Let me fix that.
Grandma moves the 0 and the 1 around so the screen tag says
1910.
GRANDMA
Alright, come on Emily, let’s go find
Ethan!
Cut to Ethan walking onto the train station. Ethan sees a man
flipping a coin in the air. The man looks like the guy from
Monopoly and has a shotgun resting beside him. The man nods
to Ethan. Ethan walks over to the man.
ETHAN
Hi, my name’s Ethan, what’s your name?
WILBUR
My name is Wilbur because I’m always
Wright.
ETHAN
I don’t get it.
WILBUR
Just a little inventor’s joke, that’s
all. Where’s your parents kid?
2.
ETHAN
At home. I’m here because I have to
stop a monster from being created
before my grandma and sister come and
tell me not to mess with history.
WILBUR
You have quite the imagination don’t
you?
ETHAN
What are you doing around here?
WILBUR
I’m going on a duck hunting trip.
(Shows off his gun)
ETHAN
Oh…
WILBUR
So what kind of monster is it that
you’re trying to stop?
ETHAN
It’s a monster that creates money from
nothing. It hurts people because it
takes away from their hard work
without the people ever even knowing
it!
WILBUR
That’s not so bad.
ETHAN
It’s awful!
WILBUR
Put in the right hands I think it
could be quite useful. Think of it
this way, if you could have all the
money and power in the world, wouldn’t
you want that? You could do a lot of
good with it.
ETHAN
Sure, but not if it would hurt other
people. Good isn’t good if it’s being
stolen from someone else.
3.
WILBUR
Sometimes sacrifices need to be made.
It’s better if they don’t know that
they’re making the sacrifice.
ETHAN
How could you say that?
WILBUR
That’s just life.
WILBUR
That's my ride. Here kid, a souvenir.
WILBUR
Use it a reminder so you'll think
about what I said.
Wilbur leaves and boards the train while Grandma and Emily
spot Ethan and zoom up next to him.
EMILY
Who was that? He looked like the
Monopoly man.
ETHAN
He said his name was Wilbur.
GRANDMA
Wilbur? Ha! That’s a joke. That was
either Nelson W Aldrich, Henry P.
Davidson or one other guy but I don't
remember his name. He's one of the
most wealthiest men in the world (at
this time.) He combined with the seven
others they make up a quarter of the
world’s wealth (at this time). They’re
probably going off to Jekyll Island
right now to create the monster.
ETHAN
Jekyll Island! But he said he was
going duck hunting!
GRANDMA
He lied. That man has never owned a
gun in his life! Says so in his
4.
biography.
ETHAN
You mean I met one of the creators of
the monster and I didn’t stop him!
Ethan throws the coin down on the ground. Darrel goes down
next to the coin and shoves it down his mouth, sure to get
barfed up at a later time.
GRANDMA
Ethan, we come to the past to learn
from it, not to change it.
ETHAN
But why!?! If we can do something,
then shouldn’t we do it?
GRANDMA
Yes, somebody needs to do something,
but yesterday is yesterday and today
is today. Don’t exploit my time
machine so you can mess with the
timeline! I’m not going to be cleaning
up alternative dimension wormhole
stuff. That’s somebody else’s sandbox.
If you want a change then do it in our
time, not somebody else’s time.
ETHAN
But what can I do?
GRANDMA
Tell other people about what you
learn. Share what you know. Vote, run
for office, tell your parents and your
friend’s parents to vote and run for
office.
EMILY
Would you run for office?
GRANDMA
I did! Didn’t even make it past the
preliminaries though.
GRANDMA
They say I’m... extreme... Now tell
me, did you learn anything so we can
get home?
EMILY
I learned about the medium of exchange
and how it has changed over time.
ETHAN
And I learned that there are bad
people who have a lot of power, even
in the government.
EMILY
And if we want to make changes, we
have to get involved, but in the right
way.
ETHAN
No violence. Or exploitation. Not even
exploiting Grandma’s time machine.
GRANDMA
I suppose that’ll do.
