FIBER OPTICS — MAINTENANCE PRACTICES

1. Fiber Optic Termination — Inspection
NOTE: The following procedure performs an end face inspection for fiber optic termination in the
Enhanced Vision System (EVS) II, HUD II and fuel quantity systems. It is accomplished using a
video inspection probe which accepts an inspection tip. Each inspection tip is specially selected
to mate to the appropriate connector on the EVS II / HUD II and fuel quantity signal conditioner
fiber optic paths. See Figure 201 and Figure 202.
For purposes of inspection, end face is divided into the following three zones: Core, cladding and
contact. An end face inspection examines each zone for the following four defects: Particles,
scratches, pits and cracks. No end face zone may exceed the maximum allowable defects
specified for that zone.
If any zone exceeds its maximum allowable defects, cleaning may be attempted using a cleaning
tool or lint free wipes depending on type of connection. If contamination cannot be removed,
some harness connectors have spare fibers which may be swapped for damaged fiber (EVS II
main harness only). If spare fiber is not available, entire wire harness or line replaceable unit
including end face, shall be replaced.

2. Test High-speed Fiber Optic Continuity — Inspection

NOTE: The following procedure performs a continuity test for fiber optic harnesses in Enhanced Vision
System (EVS) II and HUD II systems. A continuity test detects a break in fiber along the harness
optical path. It is accomplished with a Visual Fault Locator (VFL). The VFL emits a Class II red
laser beam. The laser is highly visible. To perform a continuity test, a VFL laser is applied to one
end of the harness under test. If a red light is visible at opposite end, optic fiber is continuous and
unbroken.
In event of a continuity test failure, a technician should perform fault isolation to determine
specific harness containing broken fiber. If broken fiber is isolated to EVS II main harness, this
harness includes spare fibers which may be swapped for the broken fiber. If spare fiber is not
available, entire wire containing broken fiber will be replaced.
