LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Learning Activity 1. THINK-PAIR-SHARE

Direction: With a partner, discuss the Sabre-tooth Curriculum and answer the
following questions. Make an activity report on this.

a. Does the sabre-tooth curriculum still exist at present? Give examples of your evidence.
 In my point of view I would say sabre-tooth curriculum still exist at the moment, since the
educational system today still teaches students to do particular tasks on their own and
which helps their mind to think and their skills to hone. For instance, the teacher uses
some activities like Think-Pair Share and Brainstorming to let the students think an
answer to a difficult question to finish the activity given by the teacher. Another evidence
is the experimentation that was done by the students in a laboratory. I remember when I
was in 3rd year high school, we do a lot of experiment using Scientific Method which
help me to apply it to the ICT subject in the new curriculum that help me as a student to
explore and do things just like experimentation using software. According also to my
research another evidence that can tell that Saber-Tooth curriculum is that the
Universities dictate school curricula with lofty, academic content and overcomplicate
education with ‘credits’, ‘units’ and rules on ‘pre-requisites’.
b. Describe the kind of curriculum that exists as described in the article.
 The curriculum that was being described in the article conveys a message in a form of
the premise “we should teach them on how to catch a fish using their hands rather than
using a net”. In which it implies that we teachers or future teachers, must teach our
students to manipulate their cognitions, we should let them think, we should let them do
the things on their own rather than feeding them with all their needs and covets.
c. What does the author mean, when he said “A curriculum should be timeless?” Explain.
 Basically, it means that a curriculum should preserve the past, but not limited by it. Our
education system also should fit with the needs of the time and serve a purpose. These
curricular decisions should be made by our society to fit our needs, rather than by
individual teachers, school buildings, or districts. Changing or adding new curriculum is
not the problem but made us more versatile in aspect. Don’t be afraid in sharing your
ideas, maybe your idea has a great purpose or benefits on our community on developing
our educational system. More teaching knowledge, tactics and technique more students
will have great outcomes of education.
d. What is the difference between education and training?
 The word training implies the act of imparting a special skill or behaviour to a person
which is commonly offered to employees of operational level. On the other hand,
education is a process of systematic learning something in an institution that develop a
sense of judgement and reasoning. In addition, training is undertaken in the hope of
gaining a specific skill. Hence, this skill will make you more employable. While education
is undertaken in the hope of furthering individual knowledge and developing intellectual.

Learning Activity 3. WRITING

Direction: 1.Is it necessary for the teachers to learn about school curriculum? Why?
Write your answer on the space provided below.

Basically, it is fundamental for the teachers to learn about school curriculum for them to
be able to help the students learn easily and connect with sources of information and knowledge
that allows them to explore ideas. A school curriculum will always help the teacher to adjust in
the environment better. Without doubt, the most important person in the curriculum
implementation process is the teacher. With their knowledge, experience and competencies,
teachers are central to any curriculum development effort. Better teachers support better
learning since they are most knowledgeable about the practice of teaching and are responsible
for introducing the curriculum in the classroom.
Learning Activity 4. SIMPLE SURVEY ACTIVITY
Direction: Find out what curriculum activities they are involve in.

Presentation of the table

As a school teacher… YES NO
1. I master the subject matter that I have to teach. 28 2
2. I implement what I have planned for my teaching 29 1
3. I monitor and access if my students are learning. 30 0
4. I modify my activity to suit my learners in my classroom. 30 0
5. I lead in the implementation of a new curriculum in my school. 24 6
6. I write instructional materials based on the recommended school curriculum 27 3
7. I look for other ways of doing to improve teaching and learning in my 30 0
classroom.
8. I participate in community activities as a good citizen. 30 0
9. I disregard the needs of my learners and focus only in my lessons. 0 30
10. I teach my plan for the students to learn. 30 0

Through the survey being conducted, most of the teachers are doing their best to
improve the learning process of the learners. Out of thirty teachers only two answered that they
did not mastered their subject matter, and these two teachers are beginners. Only one teacher
answered that he did not implement of what he planned for his teaching. It was also found in the
survey that all respondent’ teachers were monitored and accessed if their students are learning
and they also modified their activity to suit their learners in their classroom. Out of thirty
teachers, three teachers only answered that they did not write instructional materials based on
the recommended school curriculum and twenty-seven answered that they write instructional
materials. All the teachers in the survey look for other ways of doing to improve teaching and
learning in their school as well as participating in community activities as a good citizen of their
own. The respondent’ teachers do not disregard the needs of their learners and not just focus
on their lesson and teach their intended plan for their students.

In the interpretation of data, it was being observed mostly of the teachers are
curricularist. They mastered their subject matter, they initiates to write the curriculum in order to
implement what they have planned. The teachers also are trying their best how to get the
attention of their learners by modifying their activities in order to suit the interest of their
learners. The teachers also engage themselves on how to improve the curriculum in their school
and write instructional materials based in the recommended school curriculum. And the most
important is the teachers were monitored if their learners were learning and look for other ways
on how to improve teaching and learning in their classroom. Numbers of teaching also vary in
the expertise of the teacher, they can plan well how to improve the curriculum because of their
experiences.
Learning Activity 5. SELF-REFLECTION ACTIVITY
Direction: Consider yourself already a teacher. I am a Teacher! Who am I as a
Curricularist? Identify on the blanks provided who Am I as a Curricularist based on the lesson.

Innovates the curriculum Case 1: I have a good idea on how to make my learners pay attention to
the lesson. I will use the new idea and find out if it will work.

Initiates the curriculum Case 2: DepEd sent the standards, competencies and guidelines in
teaching the Mother Tongue in Grade 1 in our school. I will study and use it in the coming school
year.

Plans the curriculum Case 3. There is so much to do in one school day. I seem not able to do
all, but I have to accomplish something for my learners. I have made a daily activity plan to guide
me.

Writes the curriculum Case 4: I need a poem to celebrate the World Teacher’s Day. I composed
one to be used in my class Literature.

Innovates the curriculum Case 5: My class is composed of learners from different home
background and culture. I cannot Case 6: Knowledge id limitless. What I learned in colleges is not
enough. I need to know more, so I enrolled in the graduate school to advance my learning.

Knows the curriculum Case 6: Knowledge is limitless. What I learned in colleges is not enough.
I need to know more, so I enrolled in the graduate school to advance my learning.

Evaluates the curriculum Case 7. At the end of the year, my performance as a teacher is reflected
in the school performance of my students. So I need to provide a monitoring tool to measure how
they are progressing. The result will inform me how I will address my learners’ weakness and
enhance their strengths.

Innovates the curriculum Case 8: I am teaching in a very far away barangay with no electricity yet.
Many of the instructional aids for teaching sent to our school are films and videos tapes which
need power. I cannot use them, but the lessons are very important. So I thought of making an
alternative activity. I took my class to the river and waterfall instead of doing the lesson.

Writes the curriculum Case 9: My principal asked me to attend a write shop to make the lesson
exemplars in the teaching of science in Grade 7. In the years, and my knowledge of the subject
matter. At the end of three days, I was able to produced lesson exemplars which I am proud of.

Initiates the curriculum Case 10: From grade 7 to grade 10 of the K to 12 Enhanced Curriculum,
science as a subject is presented, taught and learned in a spiral manner. This is part of the DepEd
implementing guidelines of the curriculum. I am a Biology major, and I have insufficient knowledge
about the other areas of science such as Physics and Earth Science. Because of this dilemma, I
have to request the principal that we have team teaching. Which role of the curricularist, am I trying
to do?

Note: Choose one from the Case 1 to 10 above. Reflect on the case you have chosen and write
your reflections on the box below. Ask your classmate to read and comment on your reflections.
Both of you, discuss your answers.

Name: Daisy Ree C. Melu

Case No. 6
A. My reflection on Case No. 6 (refer to cases 1 to 10 above)
I came to realized that knowledge is truly limitless. What I have learned from studying
tertiary level and graduating from it was not enough. When most of the people stop learning
after their educational degrees, which is a contrary to the concept of “learn and grow each day”.
And as a curricularist in the future, I should never stop learning that I must engage myself in
learning new things that will give me wisdom and knowledge in order to excel and achieve
higher goals.

B. What my partner said about my reflections:

No partner.

EVALUATION: Cite sample cases/situations (similar to the cases found in learning

activity5) where you can be a curricularist.

CASES
KNOWER What I have learned during my college years was not enough to supply the
academic needs of my learners as well as myself, so I attend different teacher
seminar workshops and enrolled myself in a graduate school to achieve higher
goals of learning.
WRITER At our school, we start and finish each year with a common writing assessment
to determine individual and group writing needs. We bring in reps from other
departments and have them weigh in on what our collective goals should be. It
gives them a voice and a stake in writing instruction. Perhaps most importantly, it
reinforces the idea that writing is a team effort.
PLANNER It is already the end of school year, and teachers do not have a vacation though I
have made some daily academic plan to work and focus for the next school year
which will help my students to learn and to hone my strength as their subject
teacher.
INITIATOR I am an English teacher of Aritao High School and I have request the principal
for the teachers of English department to have seminar workshop. Since most
teachers in our department are beginners who still have not grasp the
implemented K to 12 Curriculum.
INNOVATOR Jill is a second grade teacher at Mesita Elementary School, she always rethink
the environment of the classroom to better match how students want to learn
and her dual language classroom is full of active, engaged, and dynamic
younger learners. The flexibility she creates within her instructional day for
students is refreshing.

IMPLEMENTOR I was handed a teacher’s manual by the principal of the school and told to keep
with the pace. Now I sit with my students in daily conferences, listening to learn
about the readers in my class and uses what I found to decide what to teach
next.

EVALUATOR It is the end of the semester, my performance as instructor will be reflected

based on the performance of my students. I need to provide an accurate learning
tool whether they are developing. The current result will define what my learner’s
weaknesses and how to enhance more their strength.

VIII. ASSIGNMENT: Read articles about the Philippine curriculum and then make a
commentary essay base on this. (not less than 10 sentences)

The Philippine curriculum had been influenced and evolved by its colonial history. The
colonization made a great impact on how our current educational system was patterned,
established, and structured. Several changes were made over time as it aims to develop an
educational system that caters to the needs and demands of society. The massive influence of
the colonization mirrored the development of our country’s educational system.

During pre-ancient times and early years of colonization, education was just privileged of
the few but now it was a right of every Filipino to receive and acquire education. Education in
the country was geared up to attain global competency. Our government is focused on
expanding and ensuring more Filipinos enjoy the right to education as it aims to develop and
hone better-skilled individuals. As our country strived to produce globally competitive individuals
by improving the curriculum, our government should invest in our education to create quality
and sufficient facilities for all the learners as well as better curriculums to address literacy gaps.
Education must be given top priorities among others. When education will be prioritized, better
Philippines with fully equipped individuals will arise and economic growth will follow.
