Dear Friends, Colleagues and Partners,

As I reflect on the past year

at Saban Community Clinic,
the word that springs to mind
is perseverance. While 2021
brought more of COVID’s
enormous challenges, SCC has
carried on through many other
challenging times since we
opened in 1967. And we never
once lost sight of our purpose.
For nearly 55 years, we’ve
remained dedicated to
continuously improving care
for our communities.

2 | S A B A N C O M M U N I T Y C L I N I C | 2021 AN N U A L R E P ORT
Our clinics deliver life-changing benefits far beyond the services we provide
to individuals. When we improve mental and physical health for mothers
and fathers, they can better care for their families. Healthy people can go to
work, support higher education needs, and contribute to the local economy.
In so many ways, the Clinic’s impacts ripple out to make a positive difference
to the whole community.
While writing this letter, I tried to put myself in the shoes of my team members
who choose to give everything they have – day after day – doing work that
demands their all. Sometimes it honestly makes me teary-eyed to think about
their passion, drive and commitment.
All year I watched team members put other people’s needs ahead of their own.
They cared for patients even as their own family members were suffering, and
in some cases, passing away from COVID. They found ways to carry on with
compassion, empathy and grace.
We are already seeing the toll it is taking on people’s mental health, but it will
take years to know the full impacts of this pandemic. What I know for sure,
today, is that our team was here when it mattered, showing up when our
community needed us most.
And of course, we couldn’t have done any of this without the support of our
donors, colleagues, board members, and community partners.

Thank you for all you do!

Vocabulary Matters!
Brain Spark: Pronouns 101 was a thought-provoking and
informative conversation about pronoun use. Our guest
speakers, Maybe Burke, Core Trainer at The Transgender
Training Institute and Kristian Melby, Physician Assistant at SCC,
had an engaging discussion. They talked about what pronouns
mean and why this is important for society – and for the work our
Clinic does providing healthcare to the LGBTQ+ community.

Tina Perry, Friends Board Member and President at OWN, and Adam Friedman, Chief
Marketing and Advancement Officer at SCC, moderated the talk and kept it lively.
