1. In 1970, the BBC showed a series of programmes about the history of the British
Empire. Before the series started, they advertised it. The advertisment
mentioned ‘England’s history’. Within a few hours, the BBC had received
thousands of angry calls of protest and it was forced to make an apology. Who
do you think the angry callers were? Why did the BBC apologize?
2. Think of the most well-known symbols and tokens of nationality in your
country. Are they the same types of real-life objects (e.g. plants, clothes) that are
used in Britain?
3. Bearing in mind its climate and general character, which part of Britain would
you choose to live in? Why? Is it the same part that you would like to visit for a
holiday? Why (not)?
4. Does the capital city of your country stand in the same relation to the rest
of the country as London does to Britain?
5. How do social classes differentiate themselves in your country? Is it similar to
the way people identify themselves in Britain?
6. What are important factors that can go towards creating a person’s sense of
identity in Britain? Are the same factors important ones in your country?
7. Would you advise the British to get rid of their monarchy? Why? Why not?
8. Would you say that people in your country are more or less enthusiastic about
university education than they are in Britain?
9. How do you explain the popularity of the different types of dwelling in
Britain? Are the same types popular in your country?
10.In what ways are the British pubs different from typical cafes and bars in your
country?
11.In what kind of place(s) are you most likely to find good British cooking?
12.What are the public services that a local government does for its
community? What service(s) do you want local governments in Vietnam
