Topic: Abraham and Isaac: A story of Faith

Text: Genesis 22:1-14
Contributor: Rev. Jeff Fajardo
Intro

We know Abraham, right? He is the father of many nations, he is extremely fruitful and
blessed, and kings was born from his bloodline. He was chosen by God and his obedience
affected the history of the world. You know what? As a father, he was ready to sacrifice Isaac, his
promised and long-awaited one and only son as a burnt offering—the miracle born to Sarah
when she was 90 years of age and Abraham was 100.

Good morning mga kapatid! Ako po si Pastor Jeff Fajardo at ngayong umaga, hayaan n’yo
po akong batiin ng happy Father’s Day ang lahat ng tatay, daddy, papa, baba, dada, pop, old
man, pappy, father—ang haligi ng ating tahanan. Kumusta po ang bawat isa? I hope everything
goes well with you and your family.

This morning, tunghayan po natin at pag-aralan ang buhay ni Abraham, the father of
many nations at ng kanyang anak na si Isaac sa title na: ABRAHAM and ISAAC: “A Story of
Faith, Trust, Love, Obedience, and Blessing.”

Abraham’s faith and conviction pleases God. He became the founder of the Jewish
nation. He was respected by others and was courageous and daring in defending his family at
any cost—a caring and loving father.

Abraham has a son named Isaac, a miracle baby, born when he was 100 years old to his
barren wife Sarah when she was 90. He was successful, fruitful and wealthy rancher. He usually
avoided conflicts, but when they were unavoidable, he allowed his opponent to set the rules for
settling the dispute, and sometimes, under the direct pressure, he distorted the truth.

Genesis 22:1 to 14 1“Sometime later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called. “Yes,”
he replied. “Here I am.”
2“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the land of
Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show
you.”
3The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey and took two of his servants
with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood for a fire for a burnt offering and set
out for the place God had told him about. 4On the third day of their journey, Abraham looked up
and saw the place in the distance. 5“Stay here with the donkey,” Abraham told the servants. “The
boy and I will travel a little farther. We will worship there, and then we will come right back.”

6So Abraham placed the wood for the burnt offering on Isaac’s shoulders, while he himself
carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them walked on together,
7Isaac turned to Abraham and said, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “We have the fire
and the wood,” the boy said, “but where is the sheep for the burnt offering?”
8“God will provide a sheep for the burnt offering, my son,” Abraham answered. And they both
walked on together.
9When they arrived at the place where God had told him to go, Abraham built an altar and
arranged the wood on it. Then he tied his son, Isaac, and laid him on the altar on top of the
wood. 10And Abraham picked up the knife to kill his son as a sacrifice. 11At that moment the
angel of the Lord called to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Yes,” Abraham replied.
“Here I am!”
12“Don’t lay a hand on the boy!” the angel said. “Do not hurt him in any way, for now I know that
you truly fear God. You have not withheld from me even your son, your only son.”
13Then Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught by its horns in a thicket. So, he took the ram
and sacrificed it as a burnt offering in place of his son. 14Abraham named the place YahwehYireh
(which means “the Lord will provide”). To this day, people still use that name as a proverb: “On
the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.””1

What great lesson can we learn from the life of Abraham?

Ama. Five great lessons that we can apply in our everyday life.

1. Abraham and His Faith.

One thing you will notice about Abraham’s life and faith, when he was called by God, his
answer was always “Yes Lord” and “Here I am.” Sabi sa verses 1 and 2, 1“Sometime
later, God tested Abraham’s faith. “Abraham!” God called. “Yes,” he replied. “Here I
am.” 2“Take your son, your only son—yes, Isaac, whom you love so much—and go to the
land of Moriah. Go and sacrifice him as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which
I will show you.”

makitang siya ay bumagsak, but to deepen his capacity to obey God and therefore
develop his character and faith.

Maaari

tayong magreklamo, o makita natin how God is stretching us to develop or character
and faith. Sabi nga sa Hebrews 11:6 “It’s impossible to please God apart from faith.” 2

Because Abraham was willing to give up everything to God, kahit na ito ay mahirap
naiisip.

2. Abraham and His Trust.

Trust in God means believing in His truth, ability and strength.

The passages that we read from Genesis 22:1 to 14 tells us moving account of God asking
Abraham to offer his only son Isaac as a sacrifice. Si Abraham ay naghintay ng
mahabang panahon para sa kanyang “miracle child.” This was not a cruel test but a test
of trust.

ihahandog?” tanong ni Isaac.”3 I’m very sure madudurog ang puso mo, but Abraham

trust God fully. God was testing Abraham. The purpose of testing is to strengthen also
our ability to trust God.

Trust and vow to obey Him is the key. We also learned about God is able to provide
when we trust Him completely.

3. Abraham and His Love.

God did not want Isaac to die, but he wanted Abraham to sacrifice Isaac in his heart
so it would be clear that Abraham loved God more than he loved His promised and
long-awaited son.

Sabi nga sa Matthew 22:37 and 38 37“Jesus replied to him, ‘You should love the Lord
your God completely: Love him with all your mind. Love him with all that you are. Love
him in all that you think. 38This is the greatest rule and the most important of all
God's Laws.”4

4. Abraham and His Obedience.

We read in verse 3, “The next morning Abraham got up early. He saddled his donkey
and took two of his servants with him, along with his son, Isaac. Then he chopped wood
for a fire for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had told him about.”

That morning Abraham began one of the greatest acts of obedience in recorded history.
He traveled 50 miles to Mount Moriah near the site of Jerusalem. Over the years he had
learned many tough lessons about the importance of obeying was prompt and complete.

Obeying God is often struggle because it may mean giving up something we truly want.
We should not expect our obedience to God to be easy or to come naturally.

5. Abraham and His Blessing.

Abraham received abundant blessings because he obeyed God. Rich blessings as a

result of his total compliance and submission to God.

Genesis 22:15 to 18 says, 15“Then the angel of the Lord called again to Abraham from
heaven. 16“This is what the Lord says: Because you have obeyed me and have not
withheld even your son, your only son, I swear by my own name that 17I will certainly
bless you. I will multiply your descendants beyond number, like the stars in the sky and
the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will conquer the cities of their enemies.
18And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because
you have obeyed me.”5

God promise to give Abraham’s descendants the ability to conquer their enemies. In
addition, God’s assured Abraham children and grandchildren who would in turn bless
the whole earth. People’s lives would be changed as a result of knowing of the faith of
Abraham and his descendants.

We often thing of blessings as gifts that we will enjoy. But when God blesses us, His
blessings may also overflow to others.

Conclusion and Application. “Our faith is displayed by our belief and action.” “Faith is
realistic but always leave room for the unexplainable and mysterious to God.”

“God desires dependence, trust and faith in Him—not faith in our own ability to please
Him.” One of my coleaders once said, “True confidence is in God not in our own ability
and confident to oneself.”6

“The purpose of testing is to strengthen and fortify also our ability to trust God. Just
trust and obey!”

“Ipinakita ni Abraham sa Diyos ang laman ng kanyang puso, na siya ay lubos na

nagtitiwala at tunay na nagmamahal sa Kanya. Ang kanyang pagtitiwala at pagmamahal
sa Diyos: He was willing to give up his only son.”

“When we understand that God is speaking to us through His Word and impulse of the
Holy Spirit, we are to respond as quickly as Abraham. Obedience to God must be
prompt and complete.”
