UNIT 3: LANDSCAPES SOCIAL SCIENCE

1. LANDSCAPE CHANGES

1. What is a landscape? It´s what we see around us. It contains natural


features and man-made features.
2. What are natural features? Elements that are found in nature.
3. What are man-made features? Elements that are made by humans.
4. What types of landscapes are there? There are inland landscapes and
costal landscapes.

2. INLAND LANDSCAPES

5. What are the inland landscapes? They are mountains landscapes and
plain landscapes.
6. Where are inland landscapes? They are far from the sea.

2.1. MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPES

7. What natural features can you see in a mountain landscape?


Mountains, mountain ranges, plateaus, valleys, woods…
8. What man-made features can you see in a mountain landscape?
Small villages, narrow roads with tunnels…
9. What is a mountain? A high area of land. /An area of high land.
10. What are the parts of a mountain? Foot, slope and peak.
11. What is a mountain range? Many mountains together. /A group of
mountains.
12. What is a plateau? A high, flat area of land.
13. What is a valley? A flat area of land between mountains.

2.2. PLAIN LANDSCAPES

14. What natural features can you see on a plain landscape? Plateaus, hills,
plains…
15. What man-made features can you see on a plain landscape? Villages
and cities, wide roads, railway lines, farms and crops …
16. What is a hill? A very small mountain.
17. What is a plain? A flat area of land. /An area of flat land.

3. COSTAL LANDSCAPES

18. Where are costal landscapes? They are near the sea.
19. What natural features can you see on a costal landscape? Islands,
beaches, capes, cliffs, gulfs, archipelagos, peninsulas…
20.What man-made features can you see on a costal landscape?
Lighthouses, ports, villages, cities…
21. What is an island? A piece of land completely surrounded by water.
22.What is an archipelago? A group of islands.
23.What is a peninsula? A piece of land surrounded by water on all sides
except one.
24.What is a beach? A low land of sand near the sea.
25.What is a cape? A piece of land that sticks out into the sea.
26.What is a gulf? A large area of sea that cuts into the land.
27.What is a cliff? A high land near the sea.

4. RIVERS IN DIFFERENT LANDSCAPES

28.Where do rivers start? In the mountains, at the source.


29.Where do rivers end? At the mouth, in the sea.
30.What are rivers like in the mountains?
- They are narrow.
- They carry little water.
- The flow fast.
31. What are rivers like on the plains?
- They are wide.
- They carry a lot of water.
- They get water from tributaries.
32.What are tributaries? Small rivers that flow into larger rivers.
33.What are rivers like on the coasts?
- They meet the sea.
- They flow slowly.
