project: euro-cup 2012 typology: urban design completion year: 2011 team: estudio santander, amorphica design research office description: the kyiv competition was a series of interventions to reinvigorate central city nodes. set with a time frame to be completed in part for the euro 2012 cup and future masterplan of 2025. when selecting a site that would be the most effective to successfully achieve the goals within the framework of preparation for the european football championship finals in 2012 we were immediately drawn to the edge (the historical city pathway). however; further search of the specific urban condition revealed that the edge is a sort of urban zipper. at the moment it is unzipped and most of its parts are loosely disconnected. presently, it would be impossible to successfully address the current situation of the edge because of three main barriers.these barriers prevent the integration of a region and a city. the three barriers: the slopes- a natural topography that served historically as protection. neberezhne highway- a soviet era highway. the solution is to not simply cut and transverse from the city to the river but to utilize the present breaks of the edge to lay urban receptors these receptors attract, listen and adapt the edge unites; it acts like an urban zipperthe edge must be developed as a region; this region unites not only the immediate competition area, and all its cultural, academic and tourist points but more importantly the old city with the slopes and the river with the slopes. the edge must be highlighted, raised and celebrated. the edge will become important for pedestrian circulation, connecting the city from south to north, but most importantly from east to west; while providing an amazing raised platform to enjoy the incredible views of the city of kiev. the edge will have a covered path on ground level and a continous platform raised slightly up to 5 meters. this way the edge will not be an imposition on the landscape and it will flow between the trees. the edge unites a park, a region, a city.

project: rakvere competition typology: urban design, commercial, & retrofit completion year: 2009 team: designopera inc., estudio santander description: currently the site is composed of a church building used as a gymnasium, an adjacent open lot and a square. at an urban scale, the gaps in the perimeter of the competition area deteriorate the urban quality of the square. there is no continuous frame to the square. there are no clear articulations to the existing urban fabric. the site is disjointed from the rest of the city; therefore the site is seldom utilized. the square has been reduced to a roundabout. the square and the arvo part hall have the potential to become the main urban node of articulation of the urban fabric of rakvere. arvo part hall has the unique opportunity to become the primary center for arvo parts music. our intent is to provide the necessary strategies, linkages and attributes to successfully create a cultural urban hub. from these opportunities we delineated three main objectives: provide an urban space that celebrates the freedom and identity of estonia and rakvere, an annex that honors arvo part and his music and the restoration of the church and the design of an urban square that respects alar kotlis original design intent.

project: sustainable north park main st. typology: urban design completion year: 2011
team: platt/whitelaw arcitects, obr architecture, north park community description: the area surrounding 32nd & university presents a perfect picture of the devastation of the urban landscape. an almost treeless carpet of asphalt covers the site from sidewalk to sidewalk, lacking division between cars moving about the parking lot and pedestrians navigating through and around it. more than just harsh it is desolate. except for the one day a week that it is occupied by a farmers market, the southernmost lot is rarely used. therefore an aggressive program of asphalt reclamation is called for. in this vision, portions of the lot remain, full-time, as parking. another portion serves as multifuncional part-time as farmers market space, the rest of the time as parking. the final third of this lot is converted, full-time, to a community park and gathering space. the suite of interventions that are used to effect these changes include: introducing basic infrastructure to support the farmers market: power, lights, water, restrooms, and hand-washing facilities; defining the block edge with a dense line of low-wattage pedestrian-oriented lights; increasing the density of street trees; retractable bollards integrated into the roadway for easy closure of the street for events; introduction of a performance space in to the new public park; softening the edge of the building where it meets the farmers market with art and greenery; memorializing the site of the farmers market with public art; providing photovoltaic power generation on large roof areas; collecting and infiltrating rainwater on the site.
