to this, they can only work for a maximum of two hours (9) at a school day. On
Saturdays, children can work for up to five hours (10) after 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. On
Sundays, children (11) were able to work for up to two hours between 7 a.m. and 11

A QUICK GUIDE TO SAVING MONEY

As a teenager, it is important to know how to save your money. You must keep
a record of your spending. Use a notebook or some other means. This can be
boring, but it is the best way to make sure you don’t spend too much money.
You’ll be able to see exactly how much money you have left at the end of each
month. You can also monitor how you spend your money. Try not to spend too
much at the beginning of the month so that you will have enough money until
the end of the month.
Be smart with your food shopping. Food will be one of your biggest costs.
Buying supermarket value products rather than well-known brands and
shopping at the end of the day when many items are discounted are some of
the simplest ways to save money. Cook your own meals instead of always
eating out.
Don’t overpay for transport. Buses remain one of the cheapest ways to
travel around town. Check whether there are any student discounts or monthly
passes available. In certain cities, there are free buses for tourists that you can
use to get around.
Don’t forget to take advantage of student discounts. Many shops and
food outlets offer student discounts. Even when they aren’t advertised, it’s worth
asking as they are sometimes still available.

GRANDFATHER’S COINS

Every Sunday, Alex and his cousins, Ruben, Nico, Clara, Joe and Monty, would go for a
big family meal at their grandparents’ house. They would always wait excitedly for the
moment their grandfather would give them a few coins, so that they could buy
something for themselves. Then, all the children would run off to buy chewing gum and
lollipops. Their grandparents soon realized the children would never learn how to
manage their money like this. So, they started a competition. After a year, the children
would have to show what they had done with all the coins they have received.
Ruben and Nico, the two smallest children, continued sending all their money
buying sweets. Every week, they would show off their sweets to the other children, while
laughing and enjoying them. Clara and Joe started saving their coins instead. But after
watching Ruben and Nico enjoy themselves week after week, both of them became
jealous and could no longer stand saving their money. They gave up and joined Ruben
and Nico in spending whatever they had on sweets.
However, Monty was a smart boy. He decided to manage his money by buying
and selling things. Soon he had a lot of money for his effort. He was close to winning.
However, Monty was greedy and he started betting with his school friends. A month
later, he lost all of his money.

6
Alex, on the other hand, had a will of iron. He saved all the money he was given
and collected more money than everyone else by the end of the year. With so much
money, he managed to buy many sweets at a discount – enough for more than a year.
In addition, he even had enough money left to buy himself a toy. He was the clear
winner, and the rest of his cousins learnt from him about the advantages of saving
money and waiting before spending.

RISING PRICES AT SCHOOL CANTEENS

School canteen operators cannot simply increase the prices of food sold to students.
This issue arose because of the sudden rise in the prices of rice, chicken,
flour, vegetables35
and plastic throughout the country. They did not wish
to operate at a loss.
36
In the meantime, he said that schools who were unhappy with
their canteen 37
operators for increasing the price should cancel their contracts with
them. He also stated that operators who want to increase their prices should submit
their applications to their school administration or district education offices first.
The school division director advised schools to monitor the food prices. He
said that some schools had already set up a special38canteen committee comprising
teachers and students.
He also said that the ministry will act on complaints submitted by parents,
39
teachers or students. Knowing these rights would help students to
make their canteens a better place. 40
