The third stage of labor can also
result in complication
ANOMALIES OF THE PLACENTA
The normal placenta weighs approximately 500g and is 15 to 20cm in
diameter and 1.5 to 3.0cm thick
It's weight is approximately one sixth that of the fetus
Placenta may be unusually be enlarged when a woman with DIABETES.
PLACENTA SUCCENTURIATE
PLACENTA SUCCENTURIATE
- A placenta that has one or more accesory lobes connected to the main placenta by blood
vessels.
- No fetal abnormality
-If small lobes retained in uterus after birth after birth, lead to MATERNAL HEMORRHAGE
-If the remaining lobe is removed from the uterus, the uterus will contract and no adverse
effect.
PLACENTA CIRCUMVALLA
PLACENTA MARGINATA
-The fold of chorion reaches just to the edge of the
placenta.
-No abnormalities are associated with this type of
placenta
PLACENTA CIRCUMVALLA
and
PLACENTA MARGINATA
CHORION- is a double-layered membrane
formed by the trophoblast and the extra-
embryonic mesoderm, which eventually will give
rise to the fetal part of the placenta.
BATTLEDORE PLACENTA
-In vasa previa the umbilical vessels of a velamentous cord insertion cross the
cervical os and therefore deliver before the fetus.
-The vessels may tear during cervical dilation just as placenta previa may tear.
VASA PREVIA
PLACENTA ACCRETA
The absence of one of the umbilical arteries is associated with congenital heart and
kidney because the insult that cause the loss of vessel may have also affected other
mesoderm germ layer structure.
