    Soil Formation Characteristic Distribution

    Alluvial Deposition Mixture of various proportion of sand, silt and clay


    made by the Size: soil particles appear bigger in size and are coarse towards the upper valley ;
    rivers common in Duars,, chos and Terai
    Age: Old- high concentration of kanker nodules: Bangar
    New- low concentration of kanker nodules: Khadar
    Rich in potash , phosphoric acid and lime High fertility
    Crops: sugarcane, paddy , wheat, maize

    Black Solidification Size: Fine- clayey


    (also known as Regur of lava high capacity to hold moisture Age: mature soil
    and black cotton soil) Rich in CaCo 3, Mg, Potash, lime Poor in phosphoric contents
    Cracks developed during hot weather helps in aeration of the soil.

    restricts water infiltration
    Cultivable only after proper irrigation.
    Forest Weathering Texture: Upper slopes: coarse grained , soil in upper parts which is snow covered is
    (mountain soil) in hilly highly acidic because of denudation. Lower valley: loamy and silty, highly fertile
    regions particularly on river’s alluvial fans.
