Greetings!
Welcome to the Think, Pair, Share activity. In this small exercise, we will help you revise
the concepts we learned in the SMDM and AS modules. This activity will help you revise
the concepts and assess knowledge along with your buddies. Identifying the challenges
that may come across while solving these snippets will help to execute these commands
better in the upcoming Analytical concepts starting from the PM module.
For this activity, your group will be divided further into subgroups/ pairs. The pairing/ group
details will be shared by your program manager.
Your submission will be assessed in accordance with the timeliness and accuracy of your
submission.
Kindly go through the below pointers to understand the delivery part of this exercise.
● Kindly attempt all three Questions. You can choose between the given snippets.
● Submissions – Word, PPT, or PDF in the Olympus with necessary inferences &
Python file can only be submitted for reference purposes.
● Support your answers with images/ graphs/ charts.
● Only one person needs to upload from the Pair/ Group.
● Its a non-graded assessment.
● If you are unable to connect with your group partners, kindly connect with the
program Manager.
Steps to follow – Connect with your Buddies – Discuss the snippets – Divide Tasks –
Collate data into one file – Submit ASAP
Time to join hands with your buddies to brainstorm these Case Snippets. All the Best.
Question 1:
Case Snippet 1A) A pollution control inspector suspected that a riverside community was
releasing semi-treated sewage into a river and this, as a consequence, was reducing the
level of dissolved oxygen of the river. He drew 15 randomly selected specimens of river

water at a location above the town and another 15 specimens below to check this. The
dissolved oxygen readings, in parts per million, are given in the accompanying table.

Is the suspicion of the pollution control inspector valid? Did he have to do any assumptions
to test his suspicion?
Or
Case Snippet 1B) Data was collected on a sample of 1000 males and females on the
following variables:
1. Age (continuous)
2. Hypertension (binary: present or absent)
3. Heart disease (binary: present or absent)
4. Glucose level (continuous)
5. Stroke (binary: present or absent)

Based on this, can it be concluded that Stroke does not have any dependency on the
presence of hypertension or heart disease?
Question 2:
Case Snippet 2A) On a communication channel one of three sequences of letters can be
transmitted: AAAA, BBBB, CCCC. It is known that the action of noise on the receiver
decreases the probability of correct reception of a transmitted letter to 0.6. The probability
of the incorrect reception of a transmitted letter as either of the two other letters increases
to 0.2. It is assumed that the letters are distorted independently of one another. Find the
probability that
1) When AA is transmitted, AB is received on the receiver
2) When AAAA is transmitted, ABCA is received on the receiver.
Or
Case Snippet 2B) A particular dataset includes 50 variables. It was also noted that in the
50x50 correlation matrix, the off-diagonal elements are within a range of [-0.03, +0.025]. If
PCA is applied to this dataset, what will the eigenvalues be (approximately)? How many
principal components will be sufficient to explain 80% variability (approximately)?
Question 3:
Case Snippet 3A) In a greenhouse experiment four different fertilizers are applied to two
plant species and the height of the species is noted. The objective is to examine whether

Case Snippet 3B) The luggage limit for an airplane is set at 50 kgs per passenger. Thus
for an airplane with 200 passenger seats, there would be a limit of 10,000 kgs. The weight
of a baggage of an individual passenger is a random variable with a mean of 45 kgs and a
standard deviation of 17.5 kgs.
a) What is the probability that a randomly chosen passenger’s luggage is above the
limit?
b) If all 200 seats are sold for a particular flight, what is the probability that the total
weight of the passengers’ baggage will exceed the 10,000 kg limit?
