GRAMMAR

Simple Present Tense indicates an action which happens in the present, but it isn’t necessary for actions to
happen right now. Simple present tense indicates, unchanging situations, general truths, scientific facts, habits,
fixed arrangements and frequently occuring events.
The Structures of Simple Present Tense
POSITIVE FORMS (+) :
▪ Subject ( I, You, We, They ) + V1 ( First Form of Verb )
▪ Subject ( He, She, It ) + VERB – S / ES / IES
NEGATIVE FORMS (-) :
▪ Subject ( I, You, We, They ) + do not / don’t + V1 ( First Form of Verb )
▪ Subject ( He, She, It ) + does not / doesn’t + V1 ( First Form of Verb )
QUESTION FORMS (?) :
▪ Do + Subject ( I, You, We, They ) + V1 ( First Form of Verb )
▪ Does + Subject ( He, She, It ) + V1 ( First Form of Verb )
SHORT ANSWER FORMS ( + / – ) :
▪ YES / NO + Subject ( I, You, We, They )+ do / do not (don’t)
▪ YES / NO + Subject ( He, She, It ) + does / does not (doesn’t)

POSITIVE (+) NEGATIVE (-) QUESTION (?)

I start I do not (don’t) start Do I start
You start You do not (don’t) start Do you start
He starts He does not (doesn’t) start Does he start
She starts She does not (doesn’t) start Does she start
It starts It does not (doesn’t) start Does it start
We start We do not (don’t) start Do we start
You start You do not (don’t) start Do you start
They start They do not (don’t) start Do they start
ATTENTION:

1. In Simple Present Tense, we add the suffix -s at the end of the verbs for the third singular subjects (
He, She, It ) . On the other hand, we use first forms of the verbs for other subjects ( I, You, We, You, They).

2. Although we add the suffix -s at the end of the verb for the third singular subjects in possitive
sentences, we remove the suffix -s at the end of the verb in questions and negative sentences because
of being used ‘does’ or ‘doesn’t’ as an auxillary verb.

6
Positive Sentences ( Sbj + V1 /V(-s,-es,-ies) )
Examples:
▪ My mother lets me go out with my friends.
▪ I prefer my coffee black.
▪ She puts the keys on the table.

Negative Sentences ( Sbj + do/does not + V1)

Examples:
▪ My mother does not (doesn’t) let me go out with my friends.
▪ I do not (don’t) prefer my coffee black.
▪ She does not (doesn’t) put the keys on the table.

Question Sentences ( Do/Does + Sbj + V1)

Examples:
▪ Does your mother let you go out with your friends?
▪ Do you prefer your coffee black?
▪ Does she put the keys on the table?

NOTES:

We use other question words ( Like Who, What, Why , How much /
many, How often etc.) in present tense.
1)Question Words (who, what, why, how much / many, how often
etc.) + do / does + subject pronoun ( he, she, it, I, you, we,
they) + V1 ( First Form of Verb )
Examples:
▪ How often does he call you?
▪ Why do you always do this?
▪ How much does it cost?
2)Question Words (who, what, why, etc.) + V1 / V (-s,-es,-
ies) + object pronouns ( me, you, him, her,it, us, them)

COMPARATIVE ADJECTIVES

Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences between the two objects they modify (larger, smaller,
faster, higher). They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared, in this pattern: Noun (subject) +
verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object).

Formation of Comparative Adjectives

There are two ways to make or to "form" a comparative adjective:

short adjectives: add "-er"

long adjectives: use "more"

Short adjectives: add -er examples Long adjectives: use examples

1-syllable adjectives old, fast more
2-syllable adjectives ending in -y happy, easy 2-syllable adjectives not modern, pleasant

RULE: add "-er" old → older ending in -y

Variation: if the adjective ends late → later all adjectives of 3 or expensive, intellectual

in -e, just add -r more syllables

Variation: if the adjective ends big → bigger RULE: use "more" modern → more modern

in consonant, vowel, consonant, expensive → more expensive

double the last consonant

Variation: if the adjective ends happy → happier
in -y, change the y to i

With some 2-syllable adjectives, we can use "-er" OR "more":

quiet → quieter/more quiet
clever → cleverer/more clever
narrow → narrower/more narrow
simple → simpler/more simple

Exception: The following adjectives have irregular forms:

good → better
well (healthy) → better
bad → worse
far → farther/further

43
Use of Comparative Adjectives

We use comparative adjectives when talking about 2 things (not 3 or 10 or 1,000,000 things, only 2 things).

Often, the comparative adjective is followed by "than".

Look at these examples:

John is 1m80. He is tall. But Chris is 1m85. He is taller than John.

America is big. But Russia is bigger.

I want to have a more powerful computer.

Is French more difficult than English?

If we talk about the two planets Earth and Mars, we can compare them as shown in the table below:

Earth Mars
Diameter (km) 12,760 6,790 Mars is smaller than Earth.
Distance from Sun (million 150 228 Mars is more distant from
km) the Sun.
Length of day (hours) 24 25 A day on Mars is
slightly longer than a day on
Earth.
Moons 1 2 Mars has more moons than
Earth.
Surface temperature 22 -23 Mars is colder tan Earth
(degrees Celsius)

SUPERLATIVES ADJECTIVES

A superlative adjective expresses the extreme or highest degree of a quality. We use a superlative adjective to
describe the extreme quality of one thing in a group of things.

We can use superlative adjectives when talking about three or more things (not two things).

In the example below, "biggest"eris the superlative form of the adjective "big":

Formation of Superlative Adjectives

As with comparative adjectives, there are two ways to form a superlative adjective:

short adjectives: add "-est"

long adjectives: use "most"

Short adjectives Long adjectives

1-syllable adjectives old, fast 2-syllable adjectives modern, pleasant
2-syllable adjectives ending in happy, easy not ending in -y
-y all adjectives of 3 or expensive, intellectual
RULE: add "-est" old → the oldest more syllables
Variation: if the adjective late → the latest RULE: use "most" modern → the most modern
ends in -e, just add -st expensive → the most expensive
Variation: if the adjective big → the biggest
ends in consonant, vowel, Exception: The following adjectives have
consonant, double the last irregular forms:

consonant good → the best

Variation: if the adjective happy → the happiest bad → the worst
ends in -y, change the y to i far → the farthest/furthest

With some 2-syllable adjectives, we can use "-est" OR "most":

quiet → the quietest/most quiet

clever → the cleverest/most clever

narrow → the narrowest/most narrow

simple → the simplest/most simple

49
Use of Superlative Adjectives

We use a superlative adjective to describe one thing in a group of three or more things. Look at these examples:

• John is 1m75. David is 1m80. Chris is 1m85. Chris is the tallest.

• Canada, China and Russia are big countries. But Russia is the biggest.
• Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.

If we talk about the three planets Earth, Mars and Jupiter, we can use superlative adjectives as shown in the
table below:

Earth Mars Jupiter

Diameter (km) 12,760 6,790 142,800 Jupiter is the biggest.
Distance from Sun 150 228 778 Jupiter is the most
(million km) distant from the Sun.
Length of day (hours) 24 25 10 Jupiter has the
shortest day.
Moons 1 2 16 Jupiter has the
most moons.
Surface temp. 22 -23 -150 Jupiter is the coldest.
(degrees Celsius)

When we compare one thing with itself, we do not use "the":

• England is coldest in winter. (not the coldest)

• My boss is most generous when we get a big order. (not the most generous)

EXERCISES Fill in the blanks below to complete the sentences. Study the boxes above.

READING Could you tell me where the bank is?

There’s a street in my town which is very popular. It’s St. Louis Street. When you walk
through St. Louis Street you can do whatever you want. If you want to buy interesting
books you can visit Thomas Cook Bookstore which is in front of a delicious Mexican
restaurant. You also have to eat Tacos in this place.
They are spicy and hot. Next to the Mexican restaurant, to the right, there’s a hotel with
small shops. It’s the Barclay’ s Hotel. But if you really want to have lots of fun, the
Skating Rink is awesome. It’s between BCR Bank and the Shoe store. On the corner,
next to Sports Center, you can visit a 5 & 10 discount store. You’ll be amazed at the
prices. But if you want to work out and be in shape, there’s a Sports Center next to Thomas Cook bookstore.
One of the most visited places is Dunkin’ Doughnuts, with its famous cinnamon rolls. It’s between the City Hall and the
bookstore. If you visit my town, y ou won’t regret it. It will be an enjoyable experience.

GRAMMAR
OBJECT PRONOUNS

English Grammar Rules

Object pronouns are used instead of nouns, usually because we already know what the object is. It makes the
sentence easier to read and understand and avoids repetition. We normally use object pronouns after a verb or a
preposition.

The Object Pronoun – it

Be careful when using 'it' as an object pronoun because it is only in the correct context that it has meaning.
It needs to have already been mentioned or obvious to the listener what you are referring to. Compare;
You are sitting on it! (The listener probably doesn't know what the speaker refers to).
The letter is on the sofa. You are sitting on it! (It is obvious in the second sentence that the reference is to
the lett
er).

READING SCARY STORIES… TALES OF THE CRYPT.

Read the story and answer the questions.
Mary was walking home from school on Halloween when she decided to take a
shortcut through the cemetery. She was eating an apple at the same time as she was
walking. She saw her neighbor putting flowers on her husband’s grave. She said “hi”
to her, and she was looking very creepy.
There were spiders everywhere and she didn’t know how to escape. She was
looking for a way to avoid the spider webs when suddenly a ghost appeared. Mary
didn’t recognize him, but she walked slowly to it. She was very near to touch it, but
it suddenly turned around. “Aaaahhh!!!” screamed Mary with all her soul. She saw that it didn’t have a face! It took a knife out
of its hand and showed it to Mary.
She hit his arm with all her possible strength, but the monster ran to call other strange monsters so she saw the solution. She
hid in the crypt next. One skeleton saw her and called all the monsters, who closed around the crypt. She didn’t have any solution
so she stayed there for hours.
When she thought she was alone, without ghosts, witches and so on, she went out and immediately she found all her friends
laughing. It was a joke for Mary. She was in the videoclip of Thriller, with her favorite singer Michael Jackson! It was the best
scary surprise that they did to her on Halloween.

GRAMMAR
PAST PROGRESSIVE NEGATIVE FORM
To make an affirmative (positive) statement negative, add "not" before the verb + -ing. You can also
use a contraction (wasn't / weren't). We use contractions frequently in spoken English.

Examples:

• I was not going to bed. /

I wasn't going to bed.
• You were not doing your homework.
• The children weren't sleeping during
the drive home.
• My boyfriend was not telling me the
truth.
• They were not playing this week.

PAST CONTINOUS INTERROGATIVE FORM

Questions that can be answered with "yes" or "no" answers are formed by inverting the subject and correct
form of the verb "be" (was / were). (Inverting means we change the order of the subject and verb form.

Examples:

• Was I snoring?
• Was he studying all night again?
• Was the baby crying a lot today?
• Were we talking too loud last night?
• Were we eating lots of candy?
• Were they playing nicely today or
were they fighting?

83
Wh – QUESTIONS PAST CONTINOUS

Examples:
• Where was he going?
• Where were they flying to?
• How were your children
getting along?
• Why were the buses
running late?
• What was your cat eating?
• What was the policeman
telling us?

Spelling: Verbs that end with one -e

For verbs that end with one -e, drop the -e and add -ing. Note that these verbs the -e sound at the end is silent.
(e.g., believe, bake, take, love).
achieve — achieving
hate — hating
live — living
take — taking
strike — striking
But: With verbs ending with a long -e sound, add -ing as normal:

• see — seeing
• be — being
• flee — fleeing
• agree — agreeing

Spelling: Short one-syllable verbs ending in CVC

If the verb has one syllable and ends with CVC (a consonant + vowel + consonant), we double the final
consonant before adding the -ing ending:

• sit — sitting
• get — getting
• pet — petting
• plan — planning
• run — running
