ACTIVITY O1 – Curriculum Design Models

February 09, 2022

1. Of the models/designs, which do you think is advocated by the K to 12 Curriculum?

Explain comprehensively.

The K to 12 curriculum advocates the LEARNER-CENTERED design model of

curriculum. This is explicitly provided in Section 5 of the Enhanced Basic Education Act of
2013 (RA 10533) which states in its declaration of standards and principles that “the
curriculum shall be learner-centered, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate”. The
outcome-based education currently adopted in the Philippine education system is
primarily characterized by putting the learners at the focus of the learning process with
the teachers as facilitators of knowledge. This is in contrast to the former traditional system
where the teacher is the sole source of information and the learners are passively
receiving the knowledge being imparted. In the current setting as provided by RA 10533,
the curriculum takes into consideration the needs, interests, culture, and experiences of
the learner which is descriptive of a learner-centered curriculum.

2. Amidst the pandemic, what kind of education do you think will our school children
have?

It is unfortunate that the pandemic forced the schools to revert to a SUBJECT-

CENTERED learning process. The teachers had to prepare learning modules that the
students had to self-learn. Only the topics that are presented in the modules are learned
by the students, without the experience to develop their social skills and multiple
intelligences. In some cases, the parents assist their children in accomplishing their
learning modules, where there is little input to and diversion from the modules presented.
Needless to say, the modules bring more focus on the content of the curriculum and are
intended to cover all the topics specified in the curriculum without developing the other
aspects of the learner as a human being.

3. Give three (3) important learnings or insights you have taken from the slides.

The following are the most notable insights I have learned from the presentation:

(i) The curriculum is the overall plan of the education program. It has always been said
that failing to plan equates to planning to fail. Without the curriculum, there will be no
guide and standards to follow in putting across learning; hence, learning may not occur
at all. The curriculum gives the stakeholders a view of the bigger picture on how the
learning process will be executed. It is the design that will become the rulebook of the
faculty, the administrators, and the students that ensures the success of the education
program in producing the right kind of graduates the school intends to have.

(ii) There are various design models that we can adopt in the process of developing a
curriculum. These curriculum designs are used in different institutions depending on their
intended education system; hence, there is really no definite model that every school
must adopt, given that nowadays, the differences in learning styles and needs of students
are more prominent. However, the shift to a learner-centered design model is deemed
to enable the curriculum to focus on the students, while integrating their experiences,
their needs, and their intelligence types. Although it is not the perfect model (as it is not
ideal for a large class), this model seems to encompass, in some way, the other models.

(iii) Teachers play a significant role in designing the curriculum. Being in the frontlines of
the education process, the teacher possesses the most knowledge on what elements
should go into the curriculum. They are the ones who decide on the teaching strategies
and the types of assessment in order to facilitate the learning process successfully. They
are the main implementers of the curriculum and in the process, they are to gather the
appropriate data so that the curriculum design gets to be updated or amended for the
improvement of the education process.
