Nuku`aloIa issuing stinging accusations oI
greed and corruption by his Iormer bosses.
Among the claims in videos posted to
YouTube. Lt Col. Mara alleged the regime
used violence against dissenters and had
no plans to keep its promise to Canberra to
hold democratic elections in 2014.
He revealed on Thursday that he would
launch his regional campaign to end Fiii`s
military rule with a pro-democracy Iorum
in Queanbeyan on Saturday.
Sanctions prevent Fiiians connected to the
regime from entering Australia, but Lt Col.
Mara told the reporter: 'I expect to get in.
'I`ve put my application in and anticipate
things will go smoothly. he said Irom
Tonga.
'I`m there with a strong pro-democracy
message so that should work in my Iavour.
He said he expected to spend two weeks

National airline Air PaciIic has adopted
innovative steps to help counter soaring
Iuel prices and try to keep costs and Iares
down.
Managing director/chieI executive
oIIicer David PIlieger has revealed a
series oI Iuel-saving costs already being
implemented.
He said: 'Fuel costs make up a large part
oI our overall budget. so Air PaciIic is
not immune from feeling the impact of
high oil prices. It is Ior that reason that
we took a number of actions starting last
year to help reduce our Ileet Iuel burn
especially on our Iour-engine 747-400
aircraIt.
It comes as airlines. such as Australia`s
Qantas. increase Iares and look to reduce
staII numbers amidst the pressures oI
higher fuel prices.
Mr PIlieger an experienced iet airliner
pilot himselI said some oI the actions
taken by Air PaciIic include:
Implementation oI a Iirst-ever Iuel
conservation programme (which led to
more accurate Ilight planning and other
fuel savings programmes),
A new Iocus on not running the aircraIt
auxiliary power unit (i.e. extra iet engine
in the tail) during ground operations when
external power is available at the gate.
New one hour check-in close times that
not only ensure planes run on-time (and
don`t waste Iuel) but also enable more
accurate weight and balance calculations.
This ensures Air PaciIic planes don`t
carry or burn extra Iuel when it is not
required.
Single (such as with Boeing 737 and
767 aircraIt) and three-engine (such as
with the Boeing 747s) taxi operations
whenever possible aIter landing to
conserve fuel.
Other airlines have included other tactics
to counter rising costs like charging for
check-in service. changing checked in
luggage allowances. and charging Ior in
flight services.
Air PaciIic still includes all these in the
price of its tickets.
The arrival oI Fiii`s newest vessel. the
MV Lomaiviti Princess. has been delayed
until mid next month.
It has been revealed that this was because
oI diIIiculties Iaced by the crew in trying
to obtain their visas in Los Angeles in
order to get to Canada.
The ship. which will be run by Goundar
Shipping. was Iormerly known as the
Queen oI Prince Rupert owned by British
Columbia Ferries which has a total oI 40
ships under its name.
Goundar Shipping executive Thomas
Murgan said the ship would sail directly
Irom Canada to Levuka and will take
three weeks to arrive.
'It has been bought already but we are
iust having diIIiculties in trying to send
the crew over to bring the ship to Fiii.
Mr Murgan said.
The purchase was initiated by George
Goundar. who once worked on the Queen
oI Prince Rupert as chieI engineer. Mr

Col. Baledrokadroka said the latest
senior-ranking deIection is another sign
that the military regime is losing its grip
on power.
He said initial regime promises to Iree
the country oI corruption. reIorm the
problematic race-based electoral system
and promote good governance had
'come to nothing.
'Evidence mounts that Bainimarama
and his cronies have used their time in
oIfce to enrich themselves. he said.
Instead oI good governance. Bainimarama
had presided over a period oI economic
stagnation, an antagonistic foreign
diplomacy and heavy media censorship
aimed at stifing domestic voices oI
dissent and sending qualifed proIessionals
overseas. Baledrokadroka said.
'Enough is enough. It is time Ior Fiii`s
military commander to hand over the reins
oI power.
The Fiiian government declined to comment
to international media on all matters related
to Lt Col. Mara`s escape.
However speaking to local websites,
Bainimarama has dismissed the Iugitive`s
claims oI violence and corruption as the
words oI a 'little kid who doesn`t know
what`s happening.
He deIended the Iour and a halI years he has
spent unelected in oIfce. saying the process
oI reIorming the electoral system. to allow
Ior Iairer elections. was 'necessarily slow.
'I said elections will be held in 2014 so it`s
going to happen. he told the reporter.
Fiji threatens Canberra for granting visa
Fiii`s military government has accused
Canberra oI adding to tensions between the
two nations by granting a travel visa to a
Iormer senior Fiiian oIfcial who fed the
regime.
The regime released a statement on
Thursday saying it had been 'Iormally
advised that Canberra had issued the
visa. despite sanctions banning Fiiians
connected with the regime Irom entering.
Fiii`s Minister oI Foreign AIIairs.
Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. said he was
'disappointed to hear Australia had
issued a visa allowing Mara to travel on
a Tongan passport.
He said Canberra should have waited
to see iI Tonga granted Fiii`s request to
extradite Mara to Suva beIore getting
involved.
'By intervening in what was a bilateral
issue under consideration. Australia
has shown little regard Ior achieving a
resolution to the matter. Kubuabola
said.
'Australia`s action in welcoming a
Iugitive Irom Fiii risks an escalation
oI tensions in Fiii-Australia relations.
which Australia must take responsibility
Ior.
Mara. once Bainimarama`s right-
hand man. has angered Fiii by making
stinging accusations oI greed. corruption
and poor governance.

Cavuilati presented his credentials to the
President oI Indonesia His Excellency
Susilo Yudhoyono at the Presidential
Palace in Jakarta. Indonesia.
The presentation follows the
establishment and opening oI our
Embassy in Indonesia on April 6 by
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama.
Ratu Tui was among a group oI six
ambassadors Irom AIghanistan. and
Japan. the Holy See. Republic oI Korea
and Vietnam. who also presented their
credence to the President Yudhoyono on
the same day.
The ceremony started with the playing

the presentation as

Sustainable Mahogany Industries Limited
(SMI) has been issued the license to
purchase mahogany Irom Fiii.
Fiii`s Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama at a press conference
said the license has been given to SMI
Iollowing careIul consideration oI
numerous expressions oI interest Irom
interested persons and companies.
Commodore Bainimarama said the
license is the Iirst to be issued in Fiii.
'The license to SMI is the Iirst series oI
licenses that will be issued in due course
to successIul bidders. he said.
SMI paid government $3.8m to obtain
the license which includes $2.8m Ior the
license itselI and $1m Ior reIorestation Iees.
Commodore Bainimarama said the license
will now enable SMI to obtain guaranteed
quantities and grades oI mahogany logs
Irom Fiii Hardwood Corporation Limited
(FHCL).
He said the license Iee payable by SMI
is based on the cubic meter oI mahogany
purchase.
'SMI will pay a license Iee oI FJD $70
Vat Exclusive oI every cubic meter oI
mahogany logs purchased Irom FHCL.
Commodore Bainimarama said.
He said SMI will pay upIront license Iee
oI $1 million dollars Ior the license which
is separate from the actual price that
will be paid by SMI Ior the purchase oI
mahogany logs at the current market rates
with the annual implemental reviews for a
period oI Iive years.
In addition. Commodore Bainimarama
said to ensure that this important industry
continues to operate on a sustainable basis
and provide continuous revenue stream
Ior landowners. a separate and additional
reIorestation Iee oI $25 per cubic meters
0IIicials oI the Indonesian Cabinet.

During the ceremonies Ratu Tui
conveyed His Excellency the President
Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and Prime Minister

Fiii Mission. their understanding oI
Fiii`s situation and support Ior ongoing
reIorms and current situation in our
bilateral relations and expressed the
hope to build on ongoing arrangements
to enhance our Iriendship and relations.

Commodore Bainimarama said FHCL
has a debt stock oI $26m oI which $17m
is government guaranteed.
'Since its inception FCHL has also been
given $25m in grant notwithstanding the
sale oI mahogany in a number oI years no
substantive value added on a large scale
Ior the export market has place in Fiii.
With the commencement of this licensing
regime in coniunction with the mandate oI
the interim board oI FHCL its outstanding
anomalies are to be removed. he said.

license given today will also pave ways
Ior new iobs Ior locals and more Ioreign
exchange pouring into Fiii.

Bureau (FTIB).
Fiii`s Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-
Khaiyum said given government`s recent
policy on the change in name oI our

Republic oI Fiii it is timely that FTIB
change its name.
In a statement Sayed-Khaiyum said
the renaming oI FTIB also provides an
opportunity to create a brand name that is
modern and savvy.

Sayed-Khaiyum also said the change in
name Irom FTIB to Investment Fiii is a

The Minister said that the dates were
Iinalized in consultations with relevant
stakeholders. and also taking into account
the provisions contained in the Employment
Relations Promulgation and the
Employment Relations (Administration)
Regulations 2008.
Cabinet has approved the Airport
Departure Tax (Amendment) Regulations
2011.
Cabinet based its decision on a
submission by the Prime Minister and
Minister Ior Finance. Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama.
The Prime Minister said that it was
announced during the 2011 Budget
announcement that the Fiii Revenue
and Customs Authority (FRCA) would
administer the Departure Tax Irom
January 1. 2011.
He said that this was implemented as
announced Irom January 1. 2011. with
the total oI $100 Departure tax remitted
directly by FRCA into the Government
Consolidated Iund.
The Prime Minister said that the
amendment to the Airport Departure Tax
Regulations 2011 is to ensure that FRCA
distributes the $100 Departure tax as
intended by the Government. with $10
to be remitted to Airports Fiii Limited
(AFL) and $90 to be directly remitted to
the consolidated Iund.

ENTERS MSC ASSESSMENT
The Fiii Tuna Boat Owners Association`s
(FTBOA) albacore tuna longline Iishery
has become the Iirst Fiiian Iishery to enter
Iull assessment Ior Marine Stewardship
Council (MSC) certiIication.
Operating across the waters of the
Fiiian EEZ. the Iishery`s 24 vessels use
pelagic longline methods to catch 3.000
to 4.000mt oI albacore each year. These
tuna are sold predominantly in Iresh
Iorm to markets in Japan. USA. Thailand
and American Samoa.
The FTBOA`s albacore tuna Iishery is
currently managed under the Western
and Central PaciIic Fishery Commission
(WCPFC). Under this international
convention. Fiii is responsible Ior
managing the Iishery within its waters
but must ensure that the management is
compatible with agreements under the
Commission.
Secretary oI the FTBOA. Russell Dunham
says: 'The FTBOA is excited about
our albacore tuna Iishery undergoing
independent assessment against the
MSC standard oI sustainability.
'One oI the maior obiectives oI the
Association is to Iacilitate and promote
the sustainable use oI tuna. and tuna
related resources. in Fiii and the wider
Western PaciIic region. We see working
towards MSC certiIication as an
important step in achieving this goal.
'Achieving MSC certiIication would

CANAdIAN CARdIAC SuRGEON
TO CONduCT OPERATION
A cardiac surgeon Irom Canada is currently
in the country to conduct surgeries to
cardiac patients over the next two months.
Health spokesperson Peni Namotu says
ProIessor David Hilton will not only
conduct operations but will also train
local surgeons so that cardiac patients can
be treated by them in the Iuture.
Namotu says young surgeons are being
earmarked Ior overseas training to develop
into interventional cardiologists while the
local scene is managed with support Irom
volunteers and Iull time expatriates.
Namotu says in 2010 government spent
$1.4 million to send patients to India.

participation at the 11th Festival oI
PaciIic Arts in Honiara. Solomon Islands
Irom July 1stJuly 14th. 2012.
The decision was based on a submission
by the Minister Ior Education. National
Heritage. Culture and Arts. and Youth
and Sports. Mr Filipe Bole. The Minister
said that Fiii`s participation in regional
Iestivals is always signiIicant because oI
Fiii`s standing and inIluence in regional
affairs.
'The idea oI regional Iestivals was
also initiated by Fiii which hosted the
Inaugural PaciIic Arts Festival in 1972.

Namotu however was tight-lipped

gaining momentum every year as more and
more schools are incorporating the program
to give young people the chance to develop
skills Ior work and liIe. IulIill their potential
and have a brighter Iuture.
This enabled the Department oI Youth
to conduct program award coordinators
workshop. which was held at the Noble
House in Suva.
About 20 teachers Irom 15 schools in the
Central Division participated.
A Fiii business Iorum has been told the

the program last year and this year the
department is targeting more than 2000

Endeavour set sail on its first historical
cultural cruise from Lautoka Wharf.
Managing director Captain Semi
Koroilavesau said the vessel managed 75
per cent occupancy.
"Fifty per cent of our passengers are
from Australia and the rest are from New
Zealand, Europe and America," he said.
The voyage will take passengers on
a seven-day trip around Vanua Levu
with stops at various destinations to
observe cultural activities or to enjoy the
picturesque scenery.
"The reason for the voyage is basically to
give the passengers a fair idea of what the
true Fiji is like," he said.
"They will be introduced to a whole range
of lifestyles and experiences."
Captain Koroilavesau said the cruise would
provide opportunities for the company to
identify areas they need to improve on.
"It is basically a learning ground too for
us," he said.
"The inaugural cruise is usually interesting.
We are confident the cruise will be a

A Fijian group has renewed its calls for the
country's Public Emergency Regulation
(PER) to be lifted and for work to start on a
new constitution.
Reverend Akuila Yabaki, chief executive
of the Citizens Constitutional Forum, told
the media that the PER has been in place
for 26 months and there is no sign it will
be lifted soon.
"I've called for a public consultation in
a recent letter to the government so that
we can debate whether it is right that the
regulation should remain or otherwise," he
said.
"But the fact is when you shut people
up, they find others ways of expressing
themselves and more and more people
are turning to blogs and things and that
happens all over the world, not just Fiji."
He says interim Prime Minister Frank
Bainimarama has not replied to the letter
and he wants the government to engage his
group to help create the new constitution.
Mr Yabaki says he is also concerned that
the online debate about former Fijian
military officer Ratu Tevita Mara, who has
fled to Tonga, has spiraled into an ethno-
racist spat.
"We want to debate about the big issues,
about reforms and land reforms, electoral
reforms.
"Those are the issues that when you do not
open up the discussion, people take cheap
shotswhich tend to fuel ethno-nationalist
rhetoric we want to avoid."

The sugar industry is expected to increase
production this year.
The Reserve Bank of Fiji has indicated
that the sugar sector is forecast to increase
production this year given the reforms
undertaken within the industry.
It said most sectors of the economy such
as tourism and mining will maintain their
2010 growth momentum into this year.
It added the aggregate growth, which is
estimated to be 2.7 per cent this year is
forecasted to be supported by all sectors.
Four hospitals in the country will
soon receive medical equipment from

Cole said the medical equipment cost

made redundant in December 2006 are
being urged to bear with government as they
establish the Social Assistance Trust Fund.
The Fund was agreed on following the
signing of the Vatukoula Deed last year.
Under the Deed, Vatukoula Gold Mine
Limited will provide $6 million towards the
Fund over five years and government will
provide concessions for the company.

A high-ranking Fijian army officer hiding
out in Tonga is applying to come to New
Zealand.
And Lieutenant Colonel Tevita Mara has
told the reporter that he is willing to share
top secrets about Fiji's military regime.
Mara fled to Tonga last month after being
charged with sedition in Fiji.
He said he would be applying to come to
New Zealand.
The Department of Foreign Affairs
and Trade has already had some
communication with him.
"My understanding is that he's going to
seek at least a temporary exemption from
the sanctions. He is of course on the list of
persons banned from New Zealand," said
Foreign Minister Murray McCully.
While there is a formal procedure to go
through, indications are that Mara will be
allowed in.
And he said he is happy to share any
military intelligence he has.
"The most important aspect of it is to
discuss with the New Zealand government
what's going on and for them to know
firsthand the real situation," Mara said.

A MAN pleaded guilty to assaulting his
wife by smashing a fruit bowl on her head
and repeatedly hitting her with a broom
handle until it broke.
Rusiate Catawaqa, 32, admitted the
charge in the Suva Magistrates Court.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Feroz Ali said
the woman in this case was a victim of a
continuous cycle of abuse and violence.
The court heard that on May 31, Catawaqa
hit his wife with a fruit bowl during a
heated argument. On the following day,
Catawaqa hit his wife again when she
returned from her vegetable garden.
Catawaqa admitted the facts presented to
the court.
In mitigation, he said he wanted
forgiveness for his actions and to return
home to his children; Catawaqa requested
a non-custodial sentence.
Magistrate Thushara Rajasinghe asked the
accused if he could make arrangements
for his wife and children to stay elsewhere
while he paid them maintenance.
The father of the victim then addressed
the court, saying his daughter and her
children could stay with him and he
would support them.
The accused was then ordered not to go
near his family.
"You want to be treated like a human yet
you failed to treat your wife as a human
being," said Mr Rajasinghe.
"Remember she is also a human."
Mr Rajasinghe told Catawaqa that
until he provided a surety who was an
elder family member, bail would not be
granted.
The prosecution was told to get a report
from the Social Welfare Department on
the family and the incident.
The case will be called again on June 17.
OVER 15,000 Fijians migrated in the last
three years including the first three months
of this year.
This was revealed by the Fiji Bureau of
Statistics.
The bureau revealed 5172 locals migrated in
2008, 4812 in 2009 and 4111 in 2010.
In the first three months of this year, 1155
departed our shores for greener pastures.
The bureau listed the number of migrations
according to their occupations, which were

A MANUFACTURER of infant formulas
and foods has withdrawn its sponsorship
of the Fiji College of General Practitioners'
annual conference scheduled for this
weekend.
FCGP president Dr Ram Raju confirmed
that Nestle (Fiji) Limited had withdrawn its
sponsorship and had also indicated it would
not be participating in the conference.
"There have been some problems due to
the regulations imposed by the government
on infant formulas and foods where
manufacturers and distributors have been
asked to follow the guidelines on this," he
said.
"Nestle has informed us that it is withdrawing
its sponsorship for this reason."
Dr Raju said the withdrawal of sponsorship
would not affect the progress of the
conference planned for June 11-13 at the
Intercontinental Fiji Golf, Resort and Spa at
Nadatola.
"It (sponsorship) is just a small percentage
and the college has got a lot of other
sponsors.
"We've had a meeting and have decided not
to pursue this matter any further."
Dr Raju said the relationship between
Nestle and the college would be unaffected
and they had no intention of boycotting the
company's products.
Nestle (Fiji) Ltd business development
manager Jean-Michel Lejeune said he had
referred questions sent to him to their office
in Australia.
"We hope for some agreement and a meeting
on how best we can work around this issue,"
Mr Lejeune said.
"We are aware of the Ministry of Health's
efforts to promote exclusive breastfeeding
and we support this initiative although the
fact remains that there are mothers who
would prefer to give their child powdered
milk, especially working mothers, and we
usually provide them advice on which milk
to give their baby when they consult us."

THREE hundred amputees can look
forward to being 'normal' again.
This as a team of six specialists from Jaipur
Foot in India arrived in the country for
the purpose of creating especially-made
prosthetic limbs.
The newly created artificial limb by the
visiting team will enable amputees to walk,
run, climb, sit on the ground, squat, swim
and even jump without fear of falling.
The non-government organizations
workshop manager Om Prakash Sharma
said they would spend a month in the
country to create 300 limbs.
"This is our first trip to Fiji. We have
made many similar trips to other parts of
the world and so far, have made and given
out 371,324 prosthetic limbs in about 24
countries," he said.
Other advantages of the limbs include its
durability, cheap costs and light weight.
"We provide it for free and bring in our
own materials and additional support is
sourced from the Ministry of Health. We
use wood rubber to make the limbs which
is why it is flexible and not hard," he said.
A team from the Ministry of Health
including the minister Dr Neil Sharma
and permanent secretary Dr Sala Saketa
welcomed the team and were shown
a demonstration by one of the visiting
team members to prove the value of the
prosthetic limb.
Dr Sharma said the new limbs were
300 amputees to new limbs
economical and would enable amputees
to be productive. Three hundred amputees
have already been selected from different
parts of the country.
Police have charged 44 men and a 19-year-
old girl in connection with 15 telecom cable
thefts and damage of optic cables in Ba area.
Police spokesman Inspector Atunaisa
Sokomuri said the thefts occurred between
March and May this year and have cost
Telecom Fiji more than $80,000 in losses.
He said the men whose ages range from
1652 years have all been charged
and appeared in court as the result of a
joint operation (Operation Copperfield)
between Police, Telecom Fiji and Fiji
Sugar Corporation.
He said the other concern for Police in the
western division is the increasing number
of teenagers who have been apprehended
with the youngest caught being a 16-year-
old boy from Korovuto in Ba.

planning to commit similar offences, said
Sokomuri.
According to Sokomuri, people are using
teenagers to do the job.
Now these kids have a mark on their head
which will be with them for life. Two of the
teenagers brought in were involved in six
cases together, he said.
Beggars in Fiji are making good money
from begging says the Minister for Social
Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation,
Dr Jiko Luveni.
Luveni said this is something that lures
them to continue begging thus increasing
the number of beggars in the country.
These beggars make more money than what
the Social Welfare Department offers, she said.
Luveni said in order to combat this issue
the ministry has done a profile on beggars
beGGars make more money
on the streets.
Through the profile we are able to
track them down and provide vocational
trainings so that they can generate some
income for themselves, she said.
Dr Luveni said the beggars get adequate
amount of money from the Department so
there is no need for them to sit and beg.
She said the ministry is finding various
means to assist these beggars and remove
them from the streets.

Three Class 8 Nabua Primary School
students were honoured by Minister for
Education Filipe Bole for their bravery
in helping police apprehend three robbers
last week.
Bole said the students showed exceptional
courage when they tried to stop the youths
from robbing a helpless bank officer,
Mohammed Ali.
Although the robbers had run off with
Alis wallet and money, the boys alerted
their head teacher of the incident who
then alerted police.
The Class 8 students then assisted police
in identifying the culprits when they were
brought in for questioning. The three
robbers were later arrested and charged
XAVIER College walked away with $500 in
prize money after winning the Fiji Secondary
School debate competition.
The debate was based on students' views of
the phenomenon of global warming.
Eight schools competed in the event at
Swami Vivekananda College (SVC) in Nadi.
It was organised by Edupia Company
Limited and the Education Ministry.

with the Commissioner Western to
liaise with the LTA to allow the trucks
to operate while installments are made
later."

compared to last year.
"I expect to produce 1400 tonnes
compared to the 1000 tonnes produced
last year," he said.

The unnamed 57-year-old banged her
head during the incident in Rangiora, a

got into an unlocked car and "drove" it for
30-40m, police said.
A neighbor who saw the incident said
the woman fell after hanging off the
passenger door as the car pulled out of
one driveway, completed a U-turn and
pulled into another.
Sergeant Mike Brooklands said the woman
was seriously hurt, and while the boy was
too young to face charges, officers would
be speaking to his family.

Pacific leaders are being encouraged to
take a more active role in helping the
region's youth from committing crime.
The call follows the release of a United
Nations report that looked at a small
but increasing number of urban youth
becoming involved in crime and violence.
It has made a number of recommendations,
including youth concerns being made a
standing item agenda at the Pacific Islands
Forum.
One of the report's authors, Cameron
Noble, has told the media that more
services should be offered to the region's
troubled youth.

A speaker at the report's launch in Suva,
Jewel Toloa, said there needed to be more
youth facilities in rural areas.
"To have youth awareness programs
and maybe have some more support and
cultural services with the right people,
with qualifications to make sure that these
developments continue on and don't cease
after a certain period of time," she said.

Singapore Airlines and Virgin Australia
have entered a partnership which allows
them to sell tickets and seats on each other's
international and domestic flights.
The so called code-sharing agreement will
mean passengers may purchase a seat with
Virgin but the flight will be operated by
Singapore Air.
The deal is subject to regulatory approval.
Asia is the world's largest and fastest
growing market for air travel.
The agreement brings Singapore Airlines'
international network together with Virgin's
routes within Australia and the Pacific.
"It will enhance the attractiveness of
Australia as a travel destination while also
opening up new horizons for travellers from
Australia," said Singapore Airlines head
Goh Choon Phong in a statement.
Singapore Airlines passengers will be able
to access a further 30 destinations.
While Virgin customers will be able to fly to
70 more places.
"Singapore Airlines' extensive network
throughout Asia will be particularly
attractive to our international business and
leisure travellers," said Virgin Australia
CEO John Borghetti in a statement.
Virgin already has alliances with Delta
Airlines, Etihad and Air New Zealand.
Virgin, Australia's second largest airline,
said the agreement with Singapore Air
will also allow reciprocal frequent flyer
programme benefits and lounge access.
The alliance goes into effect on August 1st.

a man faced a court in memphis,
tennessee, after being arrested when he
took a gun to a birthday party because
his children missed out on the cake and
ice-cream.
Memphis police said Joseph Hayes was
angry his children did not get any treats at
the party, so he went home, got his gun and
went back to the gathering to threaten the
host, as reported.
According to a police affidavit, Mr Hayes
became upset and began yelling at the
victim because, "Y'all didn't save my kids
no damn ice cream and cake."
Mr Hayes, 48, told police he did not have
a gun, just an object that looked like one
tucked into his pants.
He was arrested on a charge of aggravated
assault and held on a $30,000 bond.
The trial of a Delaware pediatrician accused
of molesting 103 of his patients began
Tuesday, according to a spokesman for the
state attorney general.
Earl Bradley, whose practice was in Lewes,
Delaware, went into the trial facing 529
counts of rape, sexual exploitation of a child,
unlawful sexual contact and other charges.
Prosecutors filed an amended indictment
on Tuesday condensing the charges against
Bradley into 24 counts.
The charges accuse Bradley of first-degree
rape, forcing girls some of them no more
than 5-years-old to perform oral sex on him
and filming dozens of the children engaging
in sex acts.
Bradley has waived his right to a jury trial
and is being tried before a judge, according
to court officials in Georgetown, Delaware.
Prosecutors would have no comment on
the proceedings, said the attorney general's
spokesman, Jason Miller.
Police arrested Bradley in December 2009.
All but one of the 103 patients he is accused
of abusing are girls, some as young as 2 years
old. The alleged abuse occurred between
1998 and 2009, according to the indictment.
Evidence is based on videos seized from
Bradley's home and office, Delaware
Attorney General Beau Biden has said.

An Illinois woman charged for impaired
driving six times apparently showed up to
court drunk.
Sandra Uher had her bail revoked Thursday
and was remanded to a prison hospital after
she went to a court hearing intoxicated.
The Elgin, Ill., woman faces charges after
she allegedly ran a stop sign and crashed
into a car in March, while under the
influence of alcohol and with a revoked
license.
After the crash, police said she blew a
blood-alcohol reading of .30 - four times
the legal limit, the media reported.
Previously Uher was convicted for
impaired driving twice in one day in 1999,
and was facing four other drunk driving
charges.
If convicted, Uher could face up to 30
years behind bars.

Wilkinson, in his 40s, had only recently
bought the boat and brought it by road
from his home in Birmingham in central
England for its first outing.
After a successful fishing trip, things
started to go wrong when he entered the
harbour and the boat began taking on
water. Wilkinson was forced to abandon
ship and pictures showed him clinging to a
rail before he was rescued.
One eyewitness said: "It wasn't a very
big boat I think an ice cube could have
sunk it!"
But when rescuers arrived, they found him
drifting with a broken tiller, and no sign of
his wife.
After a brief search, they discovered that
the woman was never on the boat during
the trip and was safe on shore throughout
the whole ordeal.
The man was towed back to the dock,
where he failed a Breathalyzer test, and
was promptly charged with boating while
intoxicated.

A private gauge shows inflation has passed
its trough, and is likely to accelerate later
in the year, which is expected to lead to
further interest rate rises.
The TD Securities Melbourne Institute
monthly inflation gauge rose 0.2 per cent
in May a slower increase than its 0.3 per
cent rise in April and 0.6 per cent jump in
March.
The biggest price rises were for fruit and
vegetables (up 3 per cent), rents (up 1.5
per cent) and books, newspapers and
magazines.
Fuel prices also rose 0.5 per cent.
Offsetting the price increases were falls
for travel and accommodation, alcohol
and tobacco, and appliances, utensils and
tools.
While the headline rate of inflation is
now at 3.3 per cent, which is above the
Reserve Banks 2-3 per cent target, core
inflation remained unchanged in May.
The underlying figure, which excludes
the most volatile prices movements and
is most closely watched by the RBA, was
2.4 per cent over the year to May in the
middle of the banks target band.
Annette Beacher from TD Securities says
the strong currency has been helping to
keep a lid on inflation.
However, she says price rises in areas not
affected by the currency, known as non-
tradeable inflation, are starting to gain
traction.
If that continues to rise, no amount of
strong currency is going to moderate
that. So, other areas that are picking up
are communication and housing as well,
which is also a non-tradeable sector, she
observed.
So what were seeing here is the price
rises outside the currency, and I think
thats something thats got to be addressed
by the RBA in due course.
With core inflation remaining within
the banks target band and other recent
data showing many areas of economic
weakness, Ms Beacher says the Reserve
Bank is likely to remain comfortably on
the sidelines for several months.
However, she says rates will rise later in
the year as inflation begins to accelerate.
The US is reviewing its green card lottery
after the results of this years draw were
scratched, leaving 22,000 told in error
they had been chosen for a chance at US
residency.
The state department said a computer
failed to run a valid random selection for
the annual diversity visa lottery.
More than 19m people entered this years
lottery, which is intended to diversify the

would pursue him for compensation after
he hit her with his car last October.
The case called odious by the Supreme
Court sparked a debate about the morality
of young people.
It caused renewed hand-wringing about
the morals of the so-called rich second
generation the offspring of those who
have prospered with Chinas economic
expansion, say correspondents.
Yaos parents reportedly worked in Chinas
booming defense industries.
Yao was a student at the Xian Conservatory
of Music when he is said to have knocked
over Zhang, a waitress, on her bicycle

she would report him to the police, Yao
stabbed her eight times with a knife and

due to his false ego, niether did he join
them nor bowed down to the idol of the
Lord. When the villagers gave him the
prasad, he did not accept it & went away
from there.
When the King reached his Kingdom, he
saw that everything was destroyed & all
his 100 sons were lying dead on the foor.
The King realised that this had happened
all due to his false ego. So thinking, he
started walking towards the place where
the villagers were doing their prayers.
There, with them, he did the prayers of
Lord Satyanarayanji & had the prasad &
the charna-amrit (ie. milk, sugar, curds,
tulsi leaves & honey mixed together) &
put it in all his sons mouths. By doing
this, all his sons became alright. He got
back all his wealth & comforts of life &
fnally in the end. aIter he died. he went
to heaven.
Anybody who keeps this fast with full faith
& recite the prayers of Lord Satyanarayanji;
all his wishes will be Iulflled. With the
grace of the Lord, he will get eternity; the
wealthless will receive wealth; & will go to
heaven & fnally will come out oI the circle
of birth & death.
The names of the persons who kept this
fast & took re-birth are as follows : The
Brahmin took birth as Sudama & in his
entire life he served the Lord Krishna &
attained moksha. King Ulkamuk took
birth as King Dashrath, & in that life he
became the father of Lard Rama & attained

When you look in on your sleeping child,
you want to hear the sounds of sweet
dreams: easy breathing and perhaps an
occasional sigh. But some parents hear the
harsher sounds of gnashing and grinding
teeth, called bruxism, which is common
in kids.
What Is Bruxism?
Bruxism is the medical term for the grinding
of teeth or the clenching of jaws, especially
during deep sleep or while under stress. It
comes from the Greek word brychein,
which means to gnash the teeth. Three
out of every 10 kids will grind or clench,
experts say, with the highest incidence in
children under 5.
Causes of Bruxism
Though studies have been done, no one
knows why bruxism happens. But in some
cases, kids may grind because the top and
bottom teeth arent aligned properly. Others
do it as a response to pain, such as an
earache or teething. Kids might grind their
teeth as a way to ease the pain, just as they
might rub a sore muscle. Most kids outgrow
these fairly common causes for grinding.
Stress usually nervous tension or anger
is another cause. For instance, your child
may be worrying about a test at school or
experiencing a change in routine (a new
sibling or a new teacher). Even arguing
with parents and siblings can cause enough
stress to prompt teeth grinding or jaw
clenching.
Some kids who are hyperactive also
experience bruxism.
Effects of Bruxism
Generally, bruxism doesnt hurt a childs
teeth. Many cases go undetected with no
adverse effects, though some may result in
mild morning headaches or earaches. Most
often, however, the condition can be more
bothersome to you and others in your home
because of the grinding sound.
In some extreme circumstances, nighttime
grinding and clenching can wear down
tooth enamel, chip teeth, increase
temperature sensitivity, and cause severe
facial pain and jaw problems, such as
temporomandibular joint disease (TMJ).
Most kids who grind, however, do not have
TMJ problems unless their grinding and
clenching is chronic.
Diagnosing Bruxism
Lots of kids who grind their teeth arent
even aware of it, so its often siblings or
parents who identify the problem.
Some signs to watch for:
grinding noises when your child
is sleeping
complaints oI a sore iaw or Iace in
the morning
thumb sucking
fngernail biting
gnawing on pencils and toys
chewing the inside oI the cheek
If you think your child is grinding his or her
teeth, visit the dentist, who will examine
the teeth for chipped enamel and unusual
wear and tear, and spray air and water on
the teeth to check for unusual sensitivity.
If damage is detected, the dentist will ask
your child a few questions, such as:
How do you Ieel beIore bed?
Are you worried about anything at home
or school?
Are you angry with someone?
What do you do beIore bed?
The exam will help the dentist determine
whether the grinding is caused by
anatomical (misaligned teeth) or
psychological (stress) factors and come up
with an effective treatment plan.
Treating Bruxism
Most kids outgrow bruxism, but a
combination of parental observation and
dental visits can help keep the problem in
check until they do.
In cases where the grinding and clenching
make a childs face and jaw sore or damage
the teeth, dentists may prescribe a special
night guard. Molded to a childs teeth,
the night guard is similar to the protective
mouthpieces worn by football players.
Though a mouthpiece may take some
getting used to, positive results happen
quickly.
Helping Kids With Bruxism
Whether the cause is physical or
psychological, kids might be able to control
bruxism by relaxing before bedtime for
example, by taking a warm bath or shower,
listening to a few minutes of soothing
music, or reading a book.
For bruxism thats caused by stress, try to
fnd out what`s upsetting your child and
fnd a way to help. For example. a kid who
is worried about being away from home for
a frst camping trip might need reassurance
that mom or dad will be nearby if anything
happens.

TOURISM to Western Australia has
undergone an Oprah-led increase, the
state government says.
The number of international visitors
flocking to WA has increased in the past
year, and Tourism Minister Kim Hames
says its largely thanks to US talk-show
queen Oprah Winfrey.
According to figures released by the
federal government body Tourism
Research Australia, 707,000 international
visitors came to WA between March 2010
and 2011.
This was an increase of 2.6 per cent from
the previous year, during which time
international visitors to the state declined.

A 15-YEAR-OLD boy will become one
of the youngest people in Victoria to
be sentenced for murder after pleading
guilty to the stabbing death of Indian
student Nitin garg.
At 15 and a half it seems (he) is one of the
youngest people in this state to commit the
offence of felony murder, defense lawyer
Marcus Dempsey told Supreme Court
judge Justice Paul Coghlan in Victoria.
The boy, who cannot be named because of
his age, is one of only a dozen children who
have faced murder charges in the Supreme
Court, with other sentences ranging from
six to 16 years in custody, the court heard.
Despite phone intercepts recording the
boy, now aged 16, boasting of the killing
and at one point saying I dont know
whats better, if he died or didnt die, Mr
Dempsey said there was remorse and the
unintentional murder was a result of his
immaturity and a spontaneous attempted
robbery of Mr Gargs mobile phone.

next year.
Premier Anna Bligh says $2.2 million
will be set aside in next weeks state
budget to introduce the technology, which
will monitor the whereabouts of former
prisoners under supervision orders.
She said 70 offenders now living in the
community would begin to be fitted with
the devices by the end of the year.
A further 16 up for possible release from
jails over the next 12 months could also
qualify.
All qualifying offenders will have devices
by the first half of 2012.
These people are the worst of the worst.
These are the people that our courts
determine cannot be released back into the
community without strict supervision,
she told reporters.

The offenders are already subject to
supervision and a radio-based monitoring
system that alerts authorities if they break
curfews, but Ms Bligh said the government
wanted to keep pace with technology.
She said the move was not a reaction to
a public campaign for the technology,
saying she had wanted to bring the
program in last year but the state couldnt
afford it then.
Corrective Services Minister Neil Roberts
said the technology provided another
layer of protection for children but would
not replace the vigilance of staff that
monitors sex offenders in the community.
This type of monitoring forms the
backbone of Queenslands sex offender
supervision regime, he said.

Dubai for adultery after she was allegedly
drugged and raped plans to sue the
Australian Government.
Alicia Gali, 29, claims she was drugged
and sexually assaulted by four co-workers
at Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach Resort in
the United Arab Emirates in June 2008.
She has already been granted leave to sue
the resort and will seek leave to sue the
Commonwealth in the Brisbane Supreme
Court.
Its a desperately sad case from everyones
point of view, Justice Coghlan said.

The court heard the boy, who came from a
supportive family, had no prior convictions
when he fatally stabbed Mr Garg an
Indian economics student on his way to

assaulted by co-workers at a resort in the

severe post traumatic stress disorder,
nightmares, flash backs, depression and
claustrophobia.
Australian embassy staff advised Ms Gali
and her family not to go to the media
during her time in custody, when she was
locked in a cell with 30 other women.
Ms Gali alleges the hotel failed to
protect staff against assault and its legal
consequences.
In March, she told media the resort
encouraged workers to drink illegally
at its staff bar despite strict laws and the
requirement of drinking permits.
I thought I would be safe and protected in
an international hotel group, she said in a
statement.

Remakes are a cheap way to draw
people into theatres. Long ago,
back in the 1980s, then dramatic
action star Charles Bronson made
a series oI revenge tale flms that
garnered an impressive following.
Vigilantism and lone wolf
operatives were his hall mark. CBS
Films fnally latches onto a winning
story as that old plot line is revived
with a vengeance through a fresh
face with an impressive body of
work.
Enter the world of hit men at your
peril. Big name Hollywood stars
that are household names in the
action arena have tried their hand
at this genre. Few folks are as
lethal as the daring exploits that

Alberta. They know it along the swollen
banks of the Richelieu River in Southern
Quebec and along the battered expanse of
Lake Manitoba.
Our homes are not always sanctuary from
what arrives outside.
A new global report estimates 42 million
people were displaced last year by natural
disasters a remarkably angry period for
our planet.
Were not just throwing numbers at one
another. These are people, says Kate
Halff, head of the Internal Displacement
Monitoring Centre.
Thats what we never forget, she adds.
Speaking to QMI Agency Monday from
Geneva, Halff says the new report part
of the work of the Norwegian Refugee
Council cant possibly count every
human feeing a home in peril. but does a
good job at estimating the exodus of most
major disasters.
In 2009, the centre estimated 17 million
were displaced. In 2008, that number
climbed to 36 million.
The numbers can be signifcantly impacted
by a single mega-disaster, Halff explains.
Last year the total was pushed to extremes
because of such things as massive
fooding in China and Pakistan. as well as
earthquakes in Chile and Haiti.
While her group does not chart the
calamities themselves only their impact
on humans Halff says theres strong
evidence the number of natural disasters
reported has doubled from around 200 to
more than 400 over the past two decades.

Investigators searched McKenneys
business June 1, 2010 and seized

Thousands of people in Edmonton saw a
disruption in mail delivery Monday after
Canada Post laid oII casual staII and stopped
paying overtime.
Canada Post workers in Winnipeg. Hamilton
and Montreal have taken turns walking off
the job in rotating strikes since last week.
Canada Post spokeswoman Anick Losier
said the job action is forcing the corporation
to trim costs. Losier says its hard to
determine how the cuts to overtime and
casual staff will affect service.
'It`s very diIfcult to predict the Iuture.
Losier said. So, what I would say is that
were going to make every effort possible
to minimize any impact on our customers
because we know how important the mail
is to them.
The union said about 5,000 homes and
businesses saw a disruption in mail service
Monday. But some letter carriers are
delivering mail to complete their routes
even if they wont be paid overtime.
Negotiations are still continuing and there
was no need Ior Canada Post to infict this
disruption of service on Albertans, said
Bev Ray, president of the Canadian Union

edmonton man accuSed of $450m weB-BaSed ScamS
A 24-year-old Sherwood Park entrepreneur
is being sued by the U.S. Federal Trade
Commission (FTC) Ior allegedly scamming
consumers across the globe to the tune of
$450 million.
Jesse Willms is named the primary
defendant in an FTC civil lawsuit, alleging
him and a number of his companies have
harmed U.S. and foreign consumers
with his unfair and deceptive business
practices.
The FTC suit alleges that since 2007,
Willms has garnered more than $467
million from customers in Canada, the
U.S., the U.K., Australia and New Zealand
through web offers that give consumers
free trials of products such as fast weight-
loss tea and teeth whiteners.
Consumers would agree to pay shipping
and handling, but soon realized their
accounts were debited upwards of $70
for continued monthly member fees to
companies owned by Willms.
The suit also claims Willms uses false
celebrity endorsements to sell his products,
and failed to refund money to customers
after they learned their accounts were
debited.
None of the allegations have been proven
in court.
Willms declined to comment on the matter,
but released a public statement saying:
We believe our business practices are
compliant with the law and are working
to resolve this disagreement with the
appropriate government agencies.
The young entrepreneur, who started
many of his businesses as a teenager, has
owned companies under numerous banners
including JDW Media LLC, Just Think
Media, e-Direct software, Swipe Auctions
and the recently launched Tera Marketing
Group (TMG).
The Edmonton Better Business Bureau
(BBB) has issued consumer warnings Ior
four of the companies, giving them an
F on the BBB grade scale after more
than 3,000 local and foreign consumer
complaints were fled since 2007.
He kind of went under for a couple years
and then in about early 2009, we heard
about him again, he was selling teeth
whitening products online, said BBB
spokeswoman Ron Mycholuk.
More than 24 complaints have been fled
with Service Alberta, with customers saying
Willms`s companies made it diIfcult to get
refunds. In December, the ministry issued
a directors order demanding Willms return
about $2,700 to consumers.
He did provide refunds in almost all the
cases we dealt with, but we are continuing
our investigation and well determine
whether we need to follow any enforcement
action if necessary, says Service Alberta
spokeswoman Sharon Lopatka.
Under Alberta legislation, a business must
give a refund if it is requested.
Apparent consumers have focked to the
online world to vent about their experiences
with Willms and his companies, many
posting warning messages to steer clear
of websites that promote Willms-owned
products.
It seems Willms is also taking advantage
of the Internet to control his public image,
using more than a dozen different sites
to promote his ideas, companies and
philanthropy.
One site, named Jesse Willms Statement,
outlines a list of principles he works by. It
states: I will never allow my staff to create
any advertisement that contains untruthful
information. He goes on: I will not
claim that an offer is free if there are any
charges associated with it.
The FTC lawsuit isn`t Willms`s frst.
Billionaire Bill Gates has also gone after
Willms. Talk show giants Oprah Winfrey,
Rachel Ray and Dr. Oz Mahmet have also
sued Willms for using their likeness to sell
weight-loss products, including Wu Long
Tea.
Some of the suits were settled out of court.
Internet fraud has become a rising issue
for North American law enforcement and
government agencies.
The FTC says it was able to launch the suit
through the Alberta Partnership Against
Cross Boarder Fraud, a group of agencies
made up of the Alberta government, the
RCMP. the Canadian Competition Bureau
and the FTC.
Ian Nielsen-Jones, assistant deputy
commissioner with the Competition
Bureau, says theres a possibility Willms
could also face charges in Canada.
Its always possible that we could have a
case in a particular area. But we wouldnt
take a case on entirely the same facts as
another law enforcement agency, Nielsen-
Jones said.
The FTC has fled a preliminary iniunction
against Willms and the named defendants
in the suit, asking a judge to force Willms
to stop any unfair and deceptive business
practices while the suit is going through
the courts.
FTC oIfcials say the suit will be in Iront oI
the courts in a few months.

Finance Minister Jim Flaherty delivered
a souped-up version of an antique budget
Monday a road-tested version that leaves
the Opposition choking on exhaust and
Quebecers debating whether to jump in for
a spin.
As expected, there are only tweaks to
the March 22 budget the government
election platform for all intents - including
the elimination of the $2-per-vote subsidy
by 2015 and $2.2 billion earmarked for
Quebec to harmonize its sales tax - a deal
Ottawa would like to see completed by
Sept. 15.
The budget called A Low Tax Plan For
Jobs and Growth said the government
was on track to eliminate its $36.2 billion
defcit one year earlier than Iorecast. but
gave no specifc details oI how it plans to
reach that target by 2014-15, other than
departments have been told to look for
savings of at least 5%.
The International Monetary Fund predicts
a balanced budget for Canada by 2016.
What is known is that Ottawa is launching
a comprehensive review of spending to
fnd savings totaling $8 billion in the fnal
two years of its commitment to return to
the black. That likely means programs
will be slashed and public sector jobs lost
through attrition and retirement.
The government wont mention layoffs, nor
will it give a peak at what programs could
be chopped. Those will be announced in the
2012 budget aIter Treasury Board President
Tony Clement determines what gets axed.
Flaherty said it would be presumptuous
to say what is on the block.
There will be some programs that will
be gone. Not every program was designed
to go on forever, he said at a news
conference.
The government revised its previous
forecasts to take into account measures
such as the HST transition for Quebec and
Iorecasts a $32.3 defcit this fscal year.
$19.4 billion in 201213, $9.4 billion in
201314 and $300 million in 201415
when it hopes to return to the glory days
of balanced budgets. The drawback is the
national debt will have swollen to $610
billion in 201516 from $553 billion in
201011.
The government is taking credit for
creating 540,000 jobs including 60,000
more since March through its initiatives
to steer Canada out of a recession
that battered the global economy. The

Kids acetaminophen tablets recalled due to faulty child-resistant caps
The distributor of a variety of junior and childrens strength acetaminophen
tablets is recalling the products after receiving reports about faulty child-
resistant packaging, Health Canada said Tuesday.
Tanta Pharmaceuticals Inc. said the safety mechanism on some of the caps
may not be working properly and the caps may open even in the locked
position, presenting a risk to children who are able to open the bottle and
ingest the contents.
The company is asking retailers to immediately stop sale of the products and
return them to the company.
The acetaminophen products are sold by a number of retailers across
Canada, including Shoppers Drug Mart, Loblaws and Preferred Pharmacy.
The following products, identifed by favour, drug identifcation number (DN)
and brand name, are being recalled:

ICBC has launched an app for the
iPhone. iPod Touch and iPad. that
lets new drivers practice the driving
knowledge test before taking the real
test.
The ICBC licensing mobile practice
knowledge test can be downloaded
for free from the Apple App Store and
also includes the complete Learn to
Drive Smart guide, all driver licensing
locations, and selected videos that are
aimed at helping new drivers prepare
for their test and be safe on our roads.
Our customers have told us that they
want more options from us that better
connect with their lifestyle, said Fred
Hess, ICBCs vice president of driver
licensing. 'Getting your frst licence
is an exciting time but it can also be
an intimidating process. We believe
this app will make it easier to practice,
which we hope calms nerves and helps
new drivers focus on learning to make
smart driving decisions.
The practice knowledge test app
randomly generates 25 questions to
replicate the real test, including how to
successfully make a right-turn, drive in
school zones, watch out for vulnerable
road users and handle a vehicle that
skids and loses control. Customers
who score 100 per cent on a practice
test are rewarded by unlocking bonus
video content.
The app also includes a series of
videos that help new drivers develop
their skills on the road, including tips
on passing the road test, how to adjust
your speed relative to conditions
and intersection safety. The app also
identifes the driver licensing centre
locations nearest to the customer,
shows them how to get there, hours of
operation and contact number.

after a 20-year study, researchers from
the centers for disease control and
prevention in atlanta have concluded
that fruits and vegetables had a
demonstratively positive, protective
effect against diabetes.
A healthy diet including fruits and
vegetables could help prevent diabetes
from ever occurring. The higher levels of
fruit and vegetable consumption might
decrease the risk of diabetes in adults,
particularly women, said the researchers.
The average daily intake of fruits and
vegetables as well as the number of
participants consuming fve or more Iruits
and vegetables per day was lower among
the participants who developed diabetes
than among the participants in the study
who remained free of this disease.
The investigators determined that these results
suggest that fruit and vegetable consumption
may decrease the risk for diabetes.

saliva swab can identify newborn babies
with an infection that is responsible for
as much as 25 percent of hearing loss in
4-year olds.
Although cytomegalovirus infection is a
known cause of birth defects, including
permanent hearing loss, most CMV
inIections in inIants are not identifed early.
Suresh Boppana, and Karen Fowler from
the University of Alabama at Birmingham
and colleagues from other academic
medical centers report that a polymerase
chain-reaction (PCR)-based saliva test can
identify CMV in newborns with greater
than 97 percent accuracy.
The best home remedies for gout are the
old fashioned methods that grandparents
used. To relieve gout pain and suffering,

diet followed by counseling to keep weight

drinking pomegranate juice daily could
ease ones stress at the workplace by
reducing blood pressure and lowering
stress hormone levels.
Researchers at Queen Margaret University,
Edinburgh, in Britain, studied the physiological
effect of daily consumption of half litre of
pomegranate juice over a two-week period.
They found that all 60 volunteers, from a
range of working environments, reported
being more enthusiastic and less distressed
after having the drink.
2009, that investigated the effects of very
low energy diet for nine weeks. The present
study looks at the longer term effects of
weight maintenance over one year.
The study included 63 men between 30
to 65 years of age who suffered from
moderate to severe obstructive sleep
apnea. The participants had a body mass
index (BMI) range oI 30-40.
Of the 63 patients, 58 completed a very
low energy diet for nine weeks and then
started a one-year weight maintenance
programme (this included counseling and
advice about nutrition and exercise).
The results show that patients who lost
weight after nine weeks on the low energy
diet maintained this after a year and this
had a positive effect on their sleep apnea.
For instance, at one year, 48 percent of
patients no longer required continuous
positive airway pressure (a mask designed to
help breathing during sleep) and 10 percent
had total remission of obstructive sleep apnea.
Emad Al-Dujaili, who led the study, said
'on the basis oI these fndings there is a
iustifed argument Ior busy workers to
drink pomegranate juice to help alleviate
chronic stress and maintain good health,
reports the Telegraph.
There is a growing body of evidence that
pomegranate juice delivers wide-ranging
health benefts that merit Iurther research.
It is very rare indeed for an all-natural
iuice to oIIer the range oI health benefts
that we are seeing in pomegranate juice.
Experts at the University of Shefeld
have found that people who are born
deaf have been gifted with a better vision
because their retinas develop differently.
Their research suggested that the retina
of adults who are either born deaf or have
an onset oI deaIness within the very frst
years of life actually develops differently
to hearing adults in order for it to be able to
capture more peripheral visual information.
Using retinal imaging data and correlating
this with measures of peripheral vision
sensitivity, the team led by Charlotte
Codina and David Buckley, have shown
that the retinal neurones in deaf people
appear to be distributed differently around
the retina to enable them to capture more
peripheral visual information.
This means that in deaf people, the retinal
neurones prioritize the temporal peripheral
visual feld. which is what a person can see
in their furthest peripheral vision.
The team also found an enlarged
neuroretinal rim area in the optic nerve,
which shows that deaf people have more
neurones transmitting visual information
than hearing.
'Our obiective was to fnd what method could
test for CMV in a larger sample, rapidly,
reliably and relatively inexpensively, we found
that testing saliva works well, says Boppana,
a proIessor oI Pediatric InIectious Diseases
and the papers corresponding author.
There is currently no cure for CMV
infection or even a clear connection
between CMV and hearing loss. But
Boppana says babies should still be tested
within the frst two to three weeks oI birth.
The sooner doctors know a baby is infected
with CMV; the better they can monitor and
intervene if a child develops hearing loss.
Those interventions include speech
therapy, hearing aids, cochlear implants
and physical therapy.

Aaron Rome suspended 4 games for hitting Nathan Horton
Aaron Rome`s Stanley Cup fnal is over.
And so, too, is that of Nathan Horton, the
man he hit.
Rome has been suspended for four games
for delivering a late hit on Horton in Game
3 of the Stanley Cup Final, the National
Hockey League announced Tuesday.
Two factors were considered in reaching
this decision, said NHL Senior Vice
President oI Hockey Operations Mike
Murphy. The hit by Rome was clearly
beyond what is acceptable in terms of
how late it was delivered after Horton
had released the puck and it caused a
signifcant iniury.
Rome was assessed a fve-minute maior
penalty for interference and game
misconduct at 5:07 oI the frst period oI the
Bruins 8-1 victory on Monday.
Rome will miss the remainder of the
Stanley Cup Final.
I want to express my concern for Nathans
well being and wish him a quick and
full recovery, Rome said in a statement
released by the Canucks. I try to play
this game honestly and with integrity. As
someone who has experienced this type of
injury I am well aware of its serious nature
and have no desire for another player to
experience it. I will not take away my
teammates focus on the task at hand and
intend to speak at an appropriate time in
future.
In the event that the Final ends before
Game 7, the suspension will carry over to
the start of the 201112 regular season.
Horton, meanwhile, has been ruled out
of the remainder of the series with what
the Bruins are describing as a severe
concussion.
You couldnt tell if the handful of Vancouver
Canucks fans sprinkled throughout the raucous
TD Garden were Lou-ing or booing during
Game 4 oI the Stanley Cup fnal Wednesday.
By early in the third period, as Roberto
Luongo skated to the Canucks bench after
allowing his fourth goal of the game to the
Boston Bruins, it was probably the latter.
In the end, there is no denying the facts.
Roberto Luongo was not good here in
Boston.
Its a Canucks fans worst nightmare.
In iust over fve periods here. Luongo
allowed 12 goals on 58 shots for a smelly
.793 save percentage. No wonder the
Boston fans were serenading him with
chants of Lou-on-go, Lou-on-go when

Tiger Woods out of the U.S. Open
A few most underrated Wrestlers in WWE
Tiger Woods announced on his website
Tuesday that he will skip next weeks
U.S. Open at Congressional due to his
lingering leg injury.
I am extremely disappointed that I
wont be playing in the U.S. Open, but
its time for me to listen to my doctors
and focus on the future, Woods said on
his website. I was hopeful that I could
play, but if I did, I risk further damage
to my left leg. My knee and Achilles
tendon are not fully healed. I hope to be
ready for AT&T National, the next two
majors and the rest of the year.
Woods injured his left knee and left
Achilles tendon hitting a shot from
under a tree during the third round of
the Masters. He skipped the Wells Fargo
Championship and withdrew after nine
holes oI the Players Championship.
He famously won the 2008 U.S. Open
with a ruptured ACL and a double stress
fracture of the left tibia. Woods played
91 holes that week beIore fnally beating
Rocco Mediate. That was his last major
championship victory.
Woods missed the fnal two maiors that
season. Previous to the 2008 British
Open, the last major Woods missed was
the 1996 PGA Championship.
Unlike this year, Woods was told by
doctors three years ago that he couldnt
do further damage to his leg if he
competed.
Woods hasnt won since the end of the
2009 campaign, but it was that years
events on Thanksgiving night that kick-
started a downward spiral. He admitted
to several extramarital affairs and
subsequently got divorced.
He played the Masters in 2010 and tied
for fourth, which is exactly what he did
in last years U.S. Open. But Woods
played worse from that point on and
didnt register a top 20 in either major
championship. His only top 10 after the
U.S. Open at Pebble Beach was a tie Ior
sixth at the WGC-HSBC Champions
event.
Woods started the 2011 season poorly
with only one top 10 in fve starts. He
threw a nice Sunday charge at the leader
board at Augusta National, but came up
short and tied for fourth at the Masters.
It was at Augusta National where Woods
suffered a Grade 1 mild medial collateral
ligament sprain to his left knee and a
mild strain to his left Achilles tendon.
'It`s been a Irustrating and diIfcult
year, but Im committed to my long-term
health, Woods said on his site. I want
to thank the fans for their encouragement
and support. I am truly grateful and will
be back playing when I can.
While the names like John Cena and
Randy Orton draw all the media attention,
it is the mid-card wrestlers that have helped
elevate WWE. Back in the days of World
Championship Wrestling, these were the
lucha libre stars that made pushed the
company ahead. Who are some of the most
underrated and underutilized superstars in
WWE today?

Despite Christians World Heavyweight
Title win a couple months back, he has
been largely ignored during his WWE
career. Years ago, Christian left for TNA
Wrestling and was given their world title.
He carried the company on his back, at
times as its top heel and top face. TNA
showed WWE that Christian did have
talent and could be a top guy. Hes a solid
wrestler and an even better talker on
the mic. In pro wrestling, he is the total
package.
Upon Christians return to WWE, he was
placed on the ECW brand and was the
ECW World Champion. He carried the
Tuesday night show on his back, much like
he did with TNA. After the disbanding of
the brand, he was moved to Smackdown
where he was a mid-carder and thats it.
When Edge retired, Christian took his
place and won the World Heavyweight
Championship. He didnt even make it a
week as the champion. Im sure there is
a plan for the future, but hopefully that
involves a long title reign.
kane
Up until last year, the Big Red Monster
held the world title for just one day in
his entire career. He has been one of the
most versatile superstars in the promotion,
having the ability to be booed one night and
cheered the next, without even changing
anything in his routine. I was happy to see
him get a longer world title reign last year,
but its still not enough. Whenever they
dont know what to do with him, they put
him with the Big Show and give them a tag
team title reign. Sometimes with WWE,
they just repeat what worked in the past
and that hurts stars like Kane.
daniel Bryan
Bryan had more fans on the independent
circuit than a lot of current WWE superstars
have today. He is one of the most talented
Indy wrestlers to make the switch to a high
profle company. I am still waiting Ior the
day to come where Bryan and CM Punk
will have a feud in the WWE. Whenever
that day comes, if given the chance, it
will end up being one of the greatest pure
wrestling feuds over the past 10-15 years.
dolph Ziggler
The only remaining member of The Spirit
Squad left in WWE, Ziggler had a great
run towards the World Heavyweight
Championship, but the run involved
countless losses. Even though they were
pushing him, they were making him
lose and look bad in the process. I think
eventually, he will have to lose the Ziggler
name. Until that happens then, I dont think
he will get a real push, but he certainly has
the talent.
Ko Kingston
I have never been the biggest fan of
Kingston, but I can still see talent in the
ring. Unfortunately for him, he gets a push
and wins the Intercontinental or US Titles,
but will lose them soon after, get beat down
and then eventually win it again. It has
been a cycle that doesnt make him look
like a superstar. It just puts him in the same
boat as Kane.
When WWE had him feud with Randy
Orton, it could have been the beginning of
a great push towards a world title, instead,
he immediately fell right off to the mid-
card after it was over.
