Different Forms of EM Radiation
a. Radio wave
low-energy waves that are used in many devices around us including radio, TV, cell phones,
b. Microwaves microwave ovens, sensors that turn on and off faucets, TV’s, and everything electronic that can
be hooked up to a remote control
c. infrared
d. visible light – the light we used to read, the light that comes from cars’ headlights and brake lights,
the light from our flashlight and birthday candles.
e. Ultraviolet radiation – causes cancer because its energy is so high it alters DNA in skin cells
f. X-rays -
g. Gamma radiation – kills cancer because its energy is so high that it destroys DNA in these cells.

B. In each of the following, encircle the electromagnetic wave that has the greater energy.
1. Cellphone signals vs. infrared
2. Ultraviolet vs. infrared
3. Red vs. violet
4. Infrared vs. ultraviolet
5. Gamma rays vs. x-rays
Deepen Activity 2
Build an electromagnet using an insulated wire, nail, and a battery. Use it to pick up paper
clips, dressmaker’s pins, and needles. Move it near and around a compass. Move it through
a wire loop connected to a galvanometer. These tests show that a wire with an electric
current not only has an electric field but also a magnetic field.
Transfer Performance Task.
EM Wave Poster
The students will create a poster showing the electromagnetic spectrum the style in a
materials may be left for the student to decide. Hey must include all regions of EM spectrum
discussed in the textbook.
