D. Elaborate

Now for us to better understand our topic for

today let us first discuss what energy really is.

(Would you mind reading the definition or Yes, sir

energy ******).

Energy – In physics, it is the capacity/ability to do

work. It exist in potential, kinetic, mechanical,
thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear, light,
sound, and other various forms.

We have actually two types of energy class. The

first one is so called as potential energy and the
other one is what we called as Kinetic Energy.
Let us first discuss what is potential energy.

Potential Energy class is the energy in matter due

to arrangements of its parts, its composition,
location and position. It is commonly considered
as stored energy having the potential to do
mechanical work.

Along with potential energy class is we have its

distinct Potential Energy Forms. These includes:
1.Gravitational Energy
2.Chemical Energy
3.Elastic Energy
4.Electrical Potential Energy and
5.Nuclear Energy

Let’s discuss them one by one.

***** Please read what is Gravitational Energy. Yes, Sir!

1.) Gravitational Energy – Energy associated with

gravity. It is the potential energy stored in an
object when above earths surface.

Lets have an example, watch closely as I throw

this ball mid air, observe what happens (DEMO)

What happens to the ball?

Does it return to its original position? Yes, Sir! As you throw the ball mid air sir, it
eventually return to its original position, on
Yes, Very Good! your hand specifically!

What do you think will happen if gravity is not

existing? Possible sir that life forms will not possible
here on earth, since we’ll be all floating mid air
due to lack of gravity.
Exactly Very good!

2.) Chemical Energy – Is energy stored in the

bonds of chemical compounds, like atoms and
molecules. Energy here is released when a
chemical reaction takes place.

Now almost all of the things here on earth class

possesses chemical energy, I’ll repeat almost all!
But one concrete example of chemical energy is
the food we eat.

Question: Say for example you are hungry, what

do you usually do as a response to hunger?

And what happens to do food you eat?

Sir! We eat

After eat sir! Hunger is deprived and feels like

And after being digested what do you feel?
we are full again of energy.

Yes! Exactly, that is the chemical energy. That is

We feel energized Sir! Seems like we are able
the energy being released after reactions.
to do almost everything again.

3.) Elastic Energy – Is the mechanical potential

energy stored in the configuration of a material
or physical system as it is subjected to elastic
deformation by stretch work performed upon it.
I have here a spring, watch
closely as I compress the spring.

What did you observe?

What happens to the spring? As you compress the spring Sir! The spring also
compresses. It seems like it is just following the
movement or your action.

Yes! And as I loosen the compression? What The same sir, It follows your movement or your
happens? action.

Yes! Very Well!

4.) Electrical Energy – Is the power of the atoms

stored charged particles. It is often potential
energy some force is applied to make the
particles do some work and become kinetic
energy.

I have here a battery here. The electrical energy

here is the stored electrically charged particles
that is just waiting for them to work when they
are needed.

Is it clear? Yes Sir!

5.) Nuclear Energy – Is the energy that comes
from the nucleus or core of the atoms. Produced
in two ways,
❑ Nuclear Fusion – The nuclei are fused
together.

In our given example, two hydroogen moleccules

is fused togeteher and form a new element
known as Helium.
Say for example our very own Sun!

Did you known class that almost 98% of the

elements found in the sun is hydrogen and
helium? And almost every second reaction takes
place there. Hydrogen molecules are
instantaneously moving and fusing together
making nuclear energy?

Isn’t amazing? Yes Sir! Indeed!

❑ Nuclear Fission –The nuclei are split.

In our example, a neutron is bombared with a

Uranium element splitting into Barium and
Krypton.

Is it clear? I’ll repeat class fusion is fusing together Yes, Sir!

and fision is splitting apart

Now that is Potential erngy allong with some of

its Potential Energy Forms.
Let’s move on with, Kinetic Energy.

Kinetic Energy, -It is the energy in moving matter

or wave. Energy in motion. The energy of moving
objects.

A while ago, we’ve discussed the forms of

potential energy. Kinetic Energy also has its own
different forms and they are as follows:
1.Motion Energy
2.Radiant Energy
3.Sound Energy
4. Thermal Energy
5. Electrical Energy

***** Would you mind reading what does the

first Kinetic Energy Form is

1. Motion Energy – A.K.A. Mechanical Energy, is

the energy acquired by the moving objects upon
which work is done.

In our example, we have a car that is moving.

If the object is not moving class what energy again
Potential sir
class is present?

Yes, Very Good

Now, as you start the engine of the car, it

Yes Sir.
eventually starts to move isn’t?

Why do think that happen? Or what is the reason

Its because work is done sir. As you start up the
for the movement of the car?
engine the fuel is consumed and in return it
makes car move.
Exactly, Very Good!
2. Radiant Energy – Is a form of electromagnetic
energy. Energy resulting from electromagnetic
radiation or wave.

Yes Sir, It’s the Sun our very own Sun!

Do you know class what is the ultimate source of

energy here on earth?

Yes! And did you know that every second the sun
radiates energy here on earth, enough to sustain
life forms in our planet.

When you wake up the morning do you usually

see the rays of the sun class?

Good, Because the rays of the sun is one of our Yes, Sir!
concrete example on the radiant energy which is
being radiated in every corners of the world.

3.) Sound Energy – Is the energy that comes from

vibration moving through something. Energy that
we can hear

I have a ruler here class to demonstrate the

nature of sound energy. Watch and observe
closely (Demo)

When I am not doing anything in the ruler, do you

hear something?

But what If do this? Do you hear something

None sir!
Exactly, now that is the nature of sound energy.
You will not able to see or hear sound energy Yes Sir, A sound is created
unless there is some sort of action being exerted
upon it

4.) Thermal Energy – A.K.A Heat Energy, produced

when there is a rise in temperature that causes
atoms to move faster. Energy of a moving
particle.

5.) Electrical Energy – Is the energy of the atoms

charged particles. The energy of the electric ions.

one example of electrical energy class is the

natural occurring phenomena know as lightning.

Have you seen lightning class? Yes! Sir

Yes, And do you know how lightning is formed? ?

During storm or thunderstorm class lightning
happens. The clouds possesses negative particles
which is the electrons and our ground the earth’s
surface possesses positive charges the protons.
Now when this do things meet which each other
on the perfect spot. They create lighting. And
lightning do have electrical energy which is very,
very hot.

6.) Light Energy – Is a form of electromagnetic

radiation of a wavelength, which can be seen by
the human eye.
Uses of Light Energy:
1. To help us see
2. Regulate Heat and Temperature
3. Plants use it the process of
Photosynthesis

Question: What do you think will happen class is

light energy is not present here on earth? Do you
think us humans will be able to survive? Yes or
No?

Very Good! No, because why? Why no? No sir

Plants need light sir in order to make their own

food and supply us oxygen. oxygen is one of
Very Well! our basic need for us to survive. Without the
light plants will die and not create oxygen and
Now I want you to remember these important key soon enough all life forms will die.
points class. The difference of potential and
kinetic energy.

Difference of Potential Energy from Kinetic

4. Nuclear Energy J
5. Electrical Energy C
6. Radiant Energy I
7. Thermal Energy A
8. Motion Energy G
9. Sound Energy B
10. Light Energy H

J. Energy in nucleus, or core, of an atom

Now lets move on with the so called energy

transformation

ENERGY TRANSFORMATION
-Also known as Energy Conversion, is the
process of changing energy from one form to
another form.

I want you to bear I mind these one important

law class…

Law of Conservation of Energy

Energy can’t be created, nor destroyed”
But only change from one form to another

Light to Chemical Transformation

❑ The sun transforms nuclear energy into
heat and light energy.
❑ Plants need sunlight to grow. Animals,
and humans need plants for food
and the oxygen they produce for us to
breathe.
Example: Photosynthesis

Heat Transfer Types:

1. Convection – Heat transfer through the
movement of Liquid or Gas.
2. Conduction – Direct Transfer of Heat.
3. Radiation – Heat is absorbed.

(demo or example)

Chemical to Mechanical Transformation

❑ Our bodies convert chemical energy in
our food into mechanical energy for us
to move.

Example: Eating when hungry

Electrical to Kinetic Transformation

❑ Charged particles makes an object move
Example: Appliances in your home

Kinetic to Thermal Transformation

❑ We use certain movements to generate
heat

Example: Rubbing of Hands together

Wind to Mechanical to Electric Transformation

❑ The wind generates enough force to
move the turbine of the wind mill
allowing it to generate electricity.

Example: Bangui Windmills in Ilocos Norte

Let’s have a quick test class if you really did

understand how energy is being transformed.

Direction: Identify what energy is used and the

form it is being transformed to. (Ex: Kinetic to
Thermal)

Electrical to Light
Chemical to Mechanical

Radiant/Light to Chemical

Kinetic to Sound

Very Good Class!

For the last part of our discussion, I want you to

learn about the different formula for
Conservation of Mechanical Energy.

The sum of potential and kinetic energy is called,

Total Mechanical Energy and it is being
expressed in this equation

MET = PE+KE

Where: MET = Total Mechanical Energy

PE= Potential Energy
KE = Kinetic Energy

Now in other books class it is expressed as

TE = PE+KE

Where: TE = Total Mechanical Energy

PE= Potential Energy
KE = Kinetic Energy

For Gravitational Potential Energy of an object,

it is determined by this equation:
GPE = mgh
Where: GPE= Gravitational Potential Energy
m= mass h= height
g= acceleration due to gravity
(9.8m/s2)
For Kinetic Energy of an object, it is determined
by this equation:
Where: KE= Kinetic Energy
m= mass
v= velocity

For you to better understand this equation. Let’s

have an example.

Determine the GPE of the ball at POINT A

Given: Mass= 0.1kg
g= 9.8m/s2
h= 10 m
Formula:
GPE = mgh
Solution: Sir the answer is GPE =9.8 J
GPE= mgh
GPE= (0.1kg) (9.8m/s2) (10m)
Answer: GPE =9.8 J

What’s the answer? Yes Sir!

Yes, very good

Now can we compute for the total mechanical

energy of the ball?

Total Mechanical Energy:

Formula:
TE = PE+KE
Solution: Sir the answer is TE =9.8 J
TE= PE + KE
TE= 9.8 J + 0
Answer: TE =9.8 J
What’s the answer?

Very good!

E. Evaluate
Using the same illustration class, try to find the
GPE of the ball but this time at time point B.

Determine the GPE of the ball at POINT B

Given: Mass= 0.1kg
g= 9.8m/s2
h= 8 m

GPE=mgh

Solution:
Answer:

Kinetic Energy (TE=PE+KE)

Solution:
Answer:s

Extend (ASSIGNMENT):

Determine the gravitational potential energy of the ball at POINT C and find its
Total Mechanical Energy together with its Kinetic Energy. (10 pts)
