Jose Rizal
(Film Review)
1. Describe the life of Jose Rizal as represented in the film.
 The son of a prosperous landowner, Rizal was educated in Manila and at the University of
Madrid. A brilliant medical student, he soon committed himself to the reform of Spanish rule in
his home country, though he never advocated Philippine independence.
2. Based on your reading and class discussion, what can you say about the film's
representation of Rizal?
 Base in my readings and in the film all the book the articles have a same in the film. All the ups
and down of Rizal was detailed and it has a much excitement while watching the movie of Rizal.
3. What is the main question that the film seeks to answer? What is your own reflection
based on the film and your understanding?
 On Rizal time’s why does the other Pilipino join to Spaniards just for they sake?

Jose Rizal was portrayed by Cesar Montano who executed the acts and lines very well with a charm
that touches my heart. He even clearly delivers his lines especially Spanish language fluently. In the
beginning of the film it was shown there as scenario about Spanish Friars and the brutality of the
Spaniards against the Filipinos. Even the Execution of Father Burgos one of the three priest who was
executed by the Spaniards. The film tackles about the truth about the government during colonization of
Spaniards in the Philippines. All grievances and frustration as the speaker stated in the movie. Also, a
scenario of Paciano beaten up by the Spaniards, a brother who will always do anything just to protect
his family. He was the one who motivated Rizal to do better in school for the sake of his future. In 1986
when Rizal was arrested in Fort Santiago, he was accused in three cases which are rebellion, sedition
and illegal association. He began to foretold his stories and the things he knew about Spaniards toa
prisoner servant and Taviel. As Jose Rizal begin his story with his family you will see the Filipino values
such as “po at opo” and “mano”. Her mother Theodora taught him about praying and reading. On 1872
he was sent to study in Ateneo Municipal wherein he studies about the language of Spaniards. Later on
was sent to abroad to expand more his knowledge in order to succeed in the future. When her mother
had an eye problem called “cataratact” he was so motivated to study well abroad in order to help her
mother. Upon as his brother told him about the Spaniards and his family experiences during Spanish
regime he decided to fight those people through his writings. One of them are Noli Me Tangere and El
Filibusterismo. Those two books tha topen the eyes of the Filipinos the truth about the Spaniards.
Crisostomo Ibarra andSimoun was portrayed by Joel Torre in the film wherein they give some excerpts
from the Noli and El Fili scenes. Taviel found out that Rizal was innocent. But, the friars who were the
main target of his books, wanted to end.

Rizal influenced and inspired the natives to revolt by revealing his thoughts, his aspirations and his
suggestions through Ibarra. Andres Bonifacio was a fan of Rizal they both want to escape from the
Spaniards but in two different ways. Jose Rizal might not be in the actual bloody battlefield for freedom
from Spanish rule, but his writings were sources of inspiration for revolutionaries, especially lead by
Andres Bonifacio. They have this line called long live Philippines or “Mabuhay Pilipinas”. Jose Rizal was
not up for independence but only for reformation that would lead to the equality of the natives and the
Spaniards in terms of opportunities and uphold better and liberal education for Indios . However, as
personal crisis of Rizal hype up, especially when his mother was unjustly imprisoned, Rizal’s emotional
state of made him furious with the Philippine situation. He chose to make Simoun more radical in his
way in toppling the oppressive forces. From Crisostomo, who only wants reformation, Rizal transformed
him into Simoun who’s dangerously seeking for independence from the Spaniards.

Rizal was not only featured as a writer, doctor, brother, friend or son but also he is a lover, wherein
the film shows his great love about Leanor his cousin and the last woman in his life Josephine Bracken.
There a lot of learnings in this film one is that the young “pepe” can be an inspiration to this generation
that values family and education. His love for the country will forever be treasure not just in the history
of the Philippines but in hearts of every Filipino. The life of Rizal is an inspiration for everyone, the
things that happens from the past is a lesson for us to be smart enough so that other will not abuse us
again. The movie was heart-warming and I was inspired by the details or facts that I saw in the film. I will
surely recommend it to others because there are no mundane moments to feel upon watching it. Also it
very important for us to know what really is patriotism and nationalism is. Because Jose Rizal showed
that until his death in Bagumbayan.

Jose Rizal is the past and present of the freed and independent Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Rizal
is the same you because you too can be the same to become hero since we have the same blood that
flows in us. We have one purpose like Jose Rizal who wanted to live freedom and peace. The courage
and dignity, we too wanted hese and we need to go beyond what the yesterday have done. The movie
said we could have mistaken because no one in this world is perfect but what matter most is how we
leave the earth that we will be best remembered when we have gone.
