1.0 Purpose
To specify, control and minimize the hazards while operating the man-riding winch to lift an
employee in the mast/derrick.
2.0 Scope
This procedure shall be applied at all times by all SDS locations for any employee (regular, part-
time OFS employee, consultant, temporary hire, contractor or visitor) involved in company
business unless authorized by an exemption form.
Man riding winch shall only be used if there is no other safer alternative to carry out a task.

4.0 Responsibilities
The Country Operation Manager is responsible for ensuring distribution of, implementation of,
and compliance with this procedure.
5.0 Procedure
5.4 Operation
5.4.1 A permit to work shall be obtain prior to start the operation
5.4.2 The person being lifted should always remain in the sight of the winch operator.
If not possible, he shall be directed by an approved banksman who shall keep
sight of person being lifted and of winch operator.
5.4.3 For all man riding winch operation carried out between the rotary table and the
monkey board, the Driller is responsible and shall supervise the operation.
5.4.4 For all man riding winch operation carried out below the rotary table or above the
monkey board, the RS or ARS shall supervise the operation.
5.4.5 When the work is to be carried out under the rotary table such as on the BOP or
Bell Nipple and if the rig floor man riding winch is needed, it shall only be used
through the rotary table with the master bushing removed and a safety rail
installed around the open hole.
5.4.6 Radios shall not be used as a mean of communication between winch operator
and man being lifted.
5.4.7 No one shall be hoisted into the derrick/mast while the drill-string is rotating
and/or the blocks are in motion.
5.4.8 Tools carried up in the mast must be properly secured with rope to the harness
6.0 Implementation
This procedure replaces the TOP 941-01 and is effective immediately.
