About Us
A warm welcome to all on behalf of Kirori Mal College. Sadly, the welcome is very
different from that of earlier years due to the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic
that has deeply affected us at personal, social and professional levels. The human
spirit to overcome odds has however, sustained all of us through this very difficult
time. The teaching-learning process continued online. To start with, it was indeed
difficult for both teachers and students who were pulled out of their comfort zone
to communicate with each other digitally. While it is true that nothing can be a
complete substitute for physical presence, the college has successfully managed to
not just continue with teaching and learning but has also celebrated several
important events besides organizing national and international conferences,
workshops and certificate courses. The college is grateful to its students as well as
the teaching and non-teaching staff members who have managed to keep all
activities at a high despite the suffering caused by Covid-19. We wish everyone
good health and happy times ahead future.

Kirori Mal College is an institution of academic excellence, established in 1954, that

has always maintained its place as one of the finest within the University of Delhi.
We at KMC believe in providing for our students an environment rich in knowledge
and supportive of their extracurricular interests. The college encourages a quest for
knowledge, rooted in an ethical understanding of the world that we inhabit. This
enthusiasm for learning along with a desire to evolve into socially responsible
individuals is reflected not only in the academic atmosphere but is also visible in
the range of extra-curricular activities the college offers. Our tradition of excellence
in theatre, art and music has always added to the richness of the academic fabric
of the institution. You will encounter the unique combination of social activism,
creativity and learning in every discipline and every corner of this institution. Over
the years, the college has built up an impressive array of academic facilities such as
a fully computerized library, a state of the art computer center and an active
placement cell. Our endeavor is to make individuals more mature, responsible, and
socially aware.

2
The Principal's Desk
We, at Kirori Mal College (KMC), understand the anxiety as well as hopes of young
students and their families as they step out of the structured domain of school
curriculum into the expansive world of higher education. KMC is a constituent
college of the University of Delhi and is a part of its history, evolution and vision of
transforming society through education. The college had humble beginnings in
1951 when it was established as Nirmala College at Qutub Road in old Delhi, with
the aspiration of providing higher education to the young, including those who had
lived through the trauma of the Partition of the country. The college has always
believed in education being an unsurpassed way of channelizing the talents and
energies of the young in a manner that brings out the best in their own individual
selves but also makes them sensitive to values of justice, liberty, equality and
fraternity.

KMC welcomes its fresh entrants with the warmth of a family and helps them to
gradually gain independence of thought, a keen sense of inquiry and a search for
wisdom. We hope that by the time our students leave the gates of this institution
they are enriched not just with factual knowledge but also with the confidence of
fearlessly walking down the path of truth. The college and the college faculty too,
in turn, continue to learn from students. We have tried to evolve with the input
every batch of students brings to us by renewing and renovating programmes
connected with academics, extracurricular, sports, NCC, and NSS.

3
On behalf of the whole college, I welcome all our students to another year of
meaningful activity and experience that would lead to an enhancement of energy,
talent and capability.

National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC)
Kirori Mal College (Grade A+) 3.54 CGPA
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited our college with A+ Grade
with a CGPA of 3.54, one of the highest in the University of Delhi. The College is grateful for this
acknowledgement of excellence in the quality of the academic and extra-curricular activities it imparts.
This achievement was made possible by the relentless effort of teachers, students, and non-teaching
staff, who worked tirelessly to showcase the best that the college has to offer.

A three-member team of NAAC, an autonomous body of the UGC, visited our college from 24th to 26th
October, 2016. The NAAC Peer Team comprised of the Chairperson, T. Tirupati Rao (Former V-C,
Osmania University), Prof. A. M. Shah (Former Director, The Business School, University of Kashmir) and
Dr. Kavita Rege (Principal, Sathaye College). The team interacted with the members of Governing Body
and the Principal and visited each of the departments of the college.

The Peer Team expressed great satisfaction with the quality of the teaching-learning process of the
college that emphasizes the higher order skills of critical thinking and creativity, manifested in the
display of stalls and presentations by various departments and societies. The team had an enriching
interaction with students, teachers, non-teaching staff, parents, and alumni. They appreciated the
efforts of the college towards imparting inclusive education, the inter-disciplinary approach taken to
learning, research efforts through projects funded by different agencies to the college, and Student
Support Services through organizations like PRAYAS, PARIVARTAN, NSS, and NCC.

The kind of acknowledgement received by the college from academic authorities of the country spurs
our KMC fraternity towards competence and commitment and encourages us in our endeavour towards
excellence in higher education.

The Chairman of the Peer Team, Prof T. Tirupati Rao, commended the faculty of the college for their
consistent attempts at building a quality system and motivated every one of us to aim at greater
heights. We are grateful to the Peer Team not only for their appreciation but also for their valuable
suggestions towards the betterment of the institution.

The Assessment-cum-Accreditation Certificate awarded to the College by the NAAC speaks volumes
about the teaching-learning and evaluation process of the college, its research activities, students’
support and progression, innovations, etc. It was indeed the collective will to perform the best within
the institutional constraints, along with an extremely harmonious functioning within the institution,
which was appreciated by the NAAC Peer Team.

stereotyping, discrimination and violence. The Society provides the services of a
trained counselor. A primary objective of the Society is to create an atmosphere
free of gender discrimination on campus. The Forum holds bi-weekly meetings on

perspectives on cinema. The Film Society is very active throughout the year. It

been enjoyed by the audience and lively discussions follow most of the screenings.
The Society also organizes workshops for film making in which our students
participate. We hope to carry on this endeavour and build up adequate
infrastructural support so that our members can venture into short film making this
year.

56
EQUAL OPPORTUNITY CELL
Keeping in mind the need to create a more just society for India’s historically
marginalized sections, its religious minorities, women, persons with disabilities et
al, the college has set up an Equal Opportunity Cell. The need for such a cell at this
level comes from the understanding that higher education is a tool for attaining
social and economic equality. The Cell aims to address the issue of access and
equality while ensuring the standard of quality and relevance of education by
implementing policies of the Government of India and promoting several schemes
and programs for the disadvantaged groups that would help in eliminating social
disparities.

The primary function of the Equal Opportunity Cell is to oversee the effective
implementation of policies and programs for disadvantaged groups, to provide
guidance and counseling with respect to academic, financial, social and other
matters and to enhance diversity within the college campus. The range of activities
includes sensitization programs, English language proficiency programs, remedial
classes and other academic related activities. Students (either individually or in a
group) can freely approach the Cell to seek resolution of their problems and
grievances.

NORTH-EAST STUDENTS’ CELL

The Northeast Students’ Cell of Kirori Mal College was set up on 14th October, 2015
by a resolution of the Staff Council.

57
A sizeable number of students from the northeast are enrolled in the college in
under-graduate and post-graduate programmes. Even before The Northeast
Students’ Cell was officially set up, students, with the help of some faculty
members, organized a fresher’s welcome as well as intellectual meet on 17th
September, 2015. This event was very successful with almost all the students and
faculty member from the seven sister states and Sikkim in attendance with the
Principal as the guest of Honor.

The Cell plans to be an active forum in the future, facilitating the exchange of ideas,
which in turn will help the students in realizing their true potential and shaping
them into good citizens.

Students Union
The Students' Union is the premier student body of the college. It provides a
platform to the students to enhance their leadership qualities and political abilities.
Its primary objective is to raise students' issues and redress students' grievances.
All the students of the college automatically become members of the Students'
Union. An election is held to elect the President, General Secretary and other office
bearers of the union. The Students' Union starts its activities with the ‘Freshers
Take-off’ in the month of September. It also hosts its Annual Cultural Festival,
"Renaissance".

58
ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

accommodative environment in the society, the Centre for Disability Research and
Training provides the students of the college with a unique opportunity to partake
in this process of spreading social awareness about matters pertaining to disability.
The aim of the Centre is to actualize the goal of empowerment of people with
disabilities by evolving a discourse on disability that would challenge the
stereotypes and prejudices against disabled people and foster their socio-cultural,
economic and political inclusion in society.

importance of effecting an attitudinal change towards people with disabilities, the
Centre organizes sensitizing campaigns, workshops, lectures, talks and
conferences. It also conducts introductory certificate courses in disability studies.

systemize and disseminate academic knowledge about disability, ranging from the
sociology of the phenomenon, its representations in literature and culture,
disability politics and policies, disability law and human rights, to accessibility and
universal design, inclusion and education, capacity building and skill development,
professional training and employment.
