ENGLISH DAY COLOMBIA BARRANQUILLA CARNIVAL

good morning my name is richard alejandro mayorga


cifuentes from grade 6 of the high school tolimense and I'm
going to talk to you about my country Colombia and all the
splendor of the carnival of barranquilla.

OBJETIVE
It is an activity that arises with the need to implement a day in
which one can interact in a second language (English) in a
"Real" context which can be shown dynamically and very
flexibly, learning and interacting with other cultures.

1. DESCRIPTION OF THE COUNTRY

Colombia is located in the extreme northwestern part of South


America, coasts on the Pacific and it has on the Atlantic.
Crossed from South to North by the Andes that, near the
southern border, are divided into three branches: Western,
Central and Eastern mountain ranges.

Colombia is a country well renowned for its natural diversity,
multiculturalism, tourist destinations, and it enjoys the benefit
of having the same time zone everywhere. The national
identity is actually a blend of numerous Amerindian, European
and African heritages that have come together over the past
centuries.

3. FLAG

The flag of Colombia is the flag that represents the country, It


consists of a rectangle divided into three stripes colored with
the old primary colors that represent a lot for Colombians:
Yellow represents the abundance and wealth of our soil, but
also sovereignty, harmony and justice; blue symbolizes the
sea, the two oceans on which Colombia has coasts and which
unites us with other peoples for the exchange of products; and
red represents blood, but not the blood that spills hatred, but
rather the blood that feeds the heart and gives it movement
and life, which means love, power, strength and progress.

4. CULTURAL BACKGROUND OF THE COUNTRY

If you’re into Latin rhythms, then you’re definitely into


Colombian dances. Discover our cultural heritage with the
most popular music genres that have even made it to the
Super Bowl. The cumbia is a musical rhythm and a folkloric
dance blend between European, African and indigenous
cultures. It is the most representative in the country, and was
popularly introduced by famous Colombian composer Lucho
Bermúdez in 1946. It dates back to the colonial times in the
Caribbean region. Some see in cumbia the mythical
personification of a king named Cumbé.

5. FAMOUS PEOPLE
Colombia is a country that stands out for its achievements in
culture and economy.

• SHAKIRA: native artist from Barranquilla, with her


foundation Pies Descalzos builds schools and provides artistic
training to thousands of children throughout Colombia.

• EGAN BERNAL: Colombian cyclist born in Bogotá. He


acquired his cycling skills bypassing the natural obstacles
typical of the place where he grew up: Zipaquirá. Winner of
the 2019 Tour de France.
 FERNANDO BOTERO: Colombian painter and sculptor.
Recognized as one of the few Latin American artists with
great international acceptance. He became known for the
style of his works in which the protagonist was the volume
that he gave to each character.

 SOFIA VERGARA:Colombian actress and model, winner


of international television awards, based in the United
States. His greatest international success has been the
series "Modern Family".

 JUANES: Singer born in Medellin. He is known for his


different albums, but his humanitarian activism has led him
to sing at the Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies.

 JAMES RODRIGUEZ:At the moment he is the most


internationally recognized Colombian footballer, captain of
the Colombia team. He currently plays in the first division of
Real Madrid of Spain.

 CARLOS VIVES: Colombian singer, songwriter, actor and


businessman. One of the most recognized musical figures
in Latin America. He was the first artist to win a Grammy.
He is recognized for always exalting the Colombian folk
culture.
 NAIRO QUINTANA: Colombian cyclist. Among the most
important events in which he has participated and won are
Vuelta a España, Tour de Romandía, Giro d'Italia, Volta a
Cataluña; second place in the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France.

6. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FESTIVITY

Barranquilla is the most important traditional Colombian


festival in the world and full of magic, music, color and a lot of
joy. About 2 million people, including visitors and locals,
participate annually in the festival, 5 which begins on the
Saturday before Ash Wednesday and ends on the Tuesday
immediately after. It is an event in which all the cultural
varieties and folklore of the Colombian Caribbean Coast are
expressed, as well as the most varied local manifestations,
such as popular music and dance. The many costumes that
invoke all kinds of animal species, native and strange, are
cause for laughter and fright; African blacks; big heads;
insane; dolls; Superheros; mythological beings, who
transcend the limits of sexuality and Death, among an almost
endless number of inventions and popular occurrences. Some
of the most traditional costumes of the Barranquilla carnival
are the Marimonda, the Garabato, the Congo and the
Monocuco.

7. HISTORICAL ORIGIN OF THE FESTIVITY

It has its remote origin in the Carnival that came to America


from Spain. Hence comes its spirit of renewal and change
similar to the one that animated these festivals in Europe.The
first Carnival celebrated in the city is lost in history more than
a century ago, when Barranquilla was a small town.
However, various stories have circulated referring to the way
the people of Barranquilla celebrated Carnival; Its always
naive, graceful, festive and above all healthy form have
allowed a tradition that dates back three centuries to be
preserved. Carnival festivals, of European origin, were
introduced to America by the Spanish and Portuguese.

8. CUSTOMS

The streets of Barranquilla are filled with music, dancing and


fun during the carnival with street parties, masked parades
and celebrations of traditional music. SIXTH GRADE-
ENGLISH DAY Colombian rhythms such as cumbia, porro,
gaita and puya and dances including the Spanish paloteo,
African congo and the indigenous mico y micas are heart and
soul of the party, along with vigorous drumming and wind
instrument performances and, of course, the good citizens of
Barranquilla can’t resist dousing one another with flour and
foam.

9. GASTRONOMY

The Atlantic coast offers a wide range of typical gastronomy to


locals and foreigners, including lisa rice, bocachico fish and
mojarra, coconut rice and black-headed beans, sausage,
yucca buns, clean of cob and Angelito, egg arepa, coconut
candy, carimañola, patacón, tropical fruit juices, hayaca, cake
(rice), chicharrón and corn cakes. and from Barranquilla The
typical dish is lisa rice, which is served with cassava bun and
the Sancocho de guandú with salted meat.

10. IMPORTANT EVENTS (PARADES, FESTIVALS,


STREET SHOWS)

The carnival begins on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday


with La Batalla de Flores (The Battle of the Flowers) which is
the carnival’s most important event. It’s SIXTH GRADE-
ENGLISH DAY a six-hour show presided over by the Carnival
Queen with folk dancing, fire breathers, live music and colorful
floats. Sahara Peña: It’s followed by La Gran Parada (The
Great Parade) on Sunday, when dance groups compete
against each other and festival-goers take to the streets in
masks and disguises. The Orchestra Festival is held on
Monday, dominated by Latin and Caribbean beats and the
carnival ends on Tuesday with the symbolic burial of Joselito
Carnaval.

11. DANCE (CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE


COUNTRY´S FOLK DANCE)
From this dance of color and joy, it is known that it is a black
folkloric expression, transferred from Ciénaga Magdalena
between the end of the 19 century and the beginning of the 20
century. El Garabato belongs to the Torito and Congo dance
family, represents a struggle between life and death,
accompanied by Chandé folk music, that is, a happy and
rumbero rhythm that is part of the Barranquillera culture; It is
said that the black slaves made fun of their masters and
themselves by dancing it.
