In addition, from early 2002, INDO HERBS realised that, a

previously known plant of Jatropha/Ratan Jyot, which was known
for it’s medicinal and herbal properties, can also be used for making
Bio-diesel from its seeds. INDO HERBS started to promote its
cultivation to its clients.

INDO HERBS attended many seminars, conferences in various

cities, states all over India, and visited many agricultural
universities/farms who were engaged in similar activities, to evaluate
the importance of Bio-fuel, and came in contact with many
Government officials and agencies, who guided INDO HERBS
profusely, and enlightened us with Government policies, initiatives
and schemes for bio-fuel.

Then we came to know that many states have started to allot

wastelands on long-term lease to interested parties to promote
cultivation of Jatropha under Bio-Fuel Mission, initiated by President
of India.

In January 2007 Government of Rajasthan, declared its policy of

giving about 14.5 lakh Hectares of wastelands in various districts, to
interested parties for cultivation of Jatropha.

PREFACE

Since time immortal people have been using herbs in their

surroundings for remedies to cure various ailments. Barks and fruits of
trees, leaves, roots, flowers and other parts of major and minor plants are
extensively used for manufacture of drugs. It is estimated that in India, out
of 2000 drugs currently being used in curing human ailments, about 1500
drugs are of plant origin. Ayurvedic physician, local practitioner and
pharmaceutical industry are using more than 250 species of medicinal
plants commonly.

There are about 2000 species of plants reported to be of medicinal

importance in the Indian System of Medicine ( ISM ). However, large
quantities of medicinal plants go as a waste because their value is little
known to the public. Therefore, exhaustive survey of natural forests and
other potential habitat of medicinal plants needs to be assessed for the
status of natural regeneration and site productivity so as quantities of
medicinal plants, which could be extracted without disturbing the
ecosystem, could be determined. Disputed identity of plants could be solved
through forest plant herbaria. Herbarium is important not only for proper
identification but also for further research and investigation. Very little
literature is Available on identification of medicinal plants; therefore,
many drugs are sold only as one trade name or vice-versa.

The growing biotic pressure on natural forests are fast depleting the
plant drug potential of the forests and very little could be done to protect
them, therefore the efforts to be made for in-situ preservation of gene pool as
well as ex-situ conservation. Top priority should be given to protection of the
existing number and variety of medicinal plants in their natural habitat.

Few decades ago it was thought that abundance of most of the

medicinal plants in their natural habitat did not warrant intensive and
extensive cultivation, but now it is being realised, to cultivate and plan large
scale propagation due to growing biotic pressure on forests.

Marketing of medicinal plants is a great problem with all growers.

Although many medicinal plants are priced heavily, but when grower wants
to sell in the market, he is highly disappointed. Unless the grower is
convinced about the economic returns from growing any species it is unlikely
to popularize any species. Since many herbs are still available in the natural
forests for commercial exploitation, doubts are raised if the cultivated
produce would have viable markets.

Of lately, due to erratic atmospheric conditions and monsoon

patterns, it is also observed that the traditional crops that a farmer
used to rely on, is not giving him proper economic returns to sustain
him and his family, and as such he is willing to try some alternate
crops.

Medicinal crops, agro-forestry, horticulture, floriculture and bio-

fertilizers are some of such projects, which attract him. Due to his lack
of knowledge about planting material, cultivation and above all
marketing of his crop still bother him.

Therefore, an attempt has been made by INDO HERBS. To give a

helping hand, to growers, by providing them, with full technical
guidance about these projects. By providing them with quality planting
materials, soil testing of their farms; accordingly guide them on use
and benefits of using bio fertilizers, cultivation, care of crop, harvesting
and finally marketing their crop with a guaranteed buy-back scheme
with pre-determined rates.

1 LOCAL / COMMON SAFED MUSLI [lQsn ewlyh ]
NAME

2 TECHNICAL NAME CHLORPHYTUM BORIVILIANUM

3 INTRODUCTION The genus CHLORPHYTUM has about 175 species of

rhizhomatous herbs, found in the tropics of the world. More
than 17 varieties are found in India, from which
CHLORPHYTUM BORIVILIANUM is having maximum
medicinal properties and hence market value. It is an herb
belonging to the family Liliaceae. It is a commercially very
important medicinal plant.
4 HABIT AND HABITAT CHLORPHYTUM BORIVILIANUM is a small herb. This is a
very hardy and stubborn crop, which require very minimal
care during cultivation, but due to its economics and returns it
is also very valuable in monetary terms, hence as per opinion
of INDO HERBS, care should be taken to safe guard it
against any loss, theft and pilferage. And it should be
protected from wild boars and pigs that dig up the roots. This
species is seen as ground flora in mountains and moist
forests all over India. It has been about 10 years since it has
been started to cultivate successfully in field, with excellent
results.
5 MORPHOLOGY It is a herbaceous plant with a cluster of fleshy roots. Root
fiber’s cylindrical. Leaves 6”–18” x 1½“–2” oblanceolate,
obtuse, acute or acuminate, usually narrowed into a broad
petiole. Scape 6” – 20” stout. Raceme 3” – 8”. Bracts ¾” – 1
½” or leaves with longer pedicles ¼” – ½” jointed in the
middle. Perianth segmented lanceolate, white capsule broad
two lobed at the tip and base. Seeds1/8” in diameter.
suborbicular, flat and black.

6 MEDICINAL USE Several medicinal properties are attributed to the root. It is
also called as ‘ Indian Ginseng ‘. The dried root of the plant is
used as drug. The root contents are basically fiber, seponin,
sepogin, and glycosides.
Increased demand of roots of this species is mainly for
preparation of Ayurvedic and Allopathic medicines and tonics.
It is one of major ingredients in any kind of Chyawan-prash.
In rural and urban India Ladoos made from it are given to
expecting / lactating mothers as additional nourishment, and
to rejuvenate them. It is also used as major components in all
kinds of sex-tonics and capsules.
It is said to be highly effective for rheumatic complaints,
diabetes, hypertension, gestro troubles, and cardio – vascular
complaints. In short it has rejuvenating and energy providing
effects.
In many foreign countries it fetches very high value due to its
use in energy drinks and flakes.

CULTIVATION TECHNIQUE

7 SOIL AND CLIMATE Sandy loam soil is the best suited for its cultivation. It
flourishes well in tropical climate. Annual rainfall required is
between 500 mm to 1200 mm.

8 WHEN TO PLANT The best time for planting, in opinion of INDO HERBS, is
during May to mid July.

9 QTY. & VALUE OF App. 400.00 Kgs. roots @ RS. 350.00 – 400.00 / Kg.*
PLANTING MATERIAL • *(Cost of planting material depends on it booking period,)
/ ACRE • ( As per current INDO HERBS rates, which may change
from time to time without any prior notice )

10 LAND PREPARATION The soil should be cross-ploughed about 30 – 40 cm. deep 2

– 3 times, while mixing the bio / organic fertilizers. It should be
harrowed to make it loose and feriable. Furrows 1 ft. high and
9” wide are made or beds of 2-½ ft. width are made. Good
drainage system is a must, as at no time water should
accumulate.

11 PROPAGATING Fleshy roots are fasciculated and attached to stem disc. It is

MATERIAL used as planting material. .

12 PLANTING Each root is called as finger and stem disc is called as crown.
A single finger with a small part of crown is dissected with a
sharp dissecting knife and treated with bio / organic pesticide,
insecticide for at least 2 – 4 hrs, before being planted as
propagule for vegetative multiplication.

PROJECT REPORT PREPARED BY ‘INDO HERBS’ 11

13 SPACING Planting or sowing is done at gap of 6” x 8” and not more than
1 – ½” deep. On top of the furrow or bed. Covered with soil
not more than 1 – ½”.

14 MANURES AND USE OF CHEMICAL FERTILISERS IS STRICTLY NOT

FERTILISERS ADVICED. As chemical fertilizers adversely affect the
medicinal plants.
Instead Bio or organic manure and fertilisers are used as they
not only enhance the crop quality but also revitalize the soil
fertility.
1. Vermi compost 4,000 Kgs. / acre.
2. Neem compost 500 Kgs. / acre
3. Cow urine (each irrigation) 50 Ltrs. / acre
Any other bio /organic manure I.e. Green Manure, Bone
Manure etc. + insecticides, fungicides, readily available at
INDO HERBS as per requirement
15 IRRIGATION Irrigation should be provided from time to time as soil
requirement. Keeping in mind that all the time top soil should
remain moist. It is very important for higher yield.
Imp. : It is important that at any stage, water should not be
stagnant, as it will adversely affect the crop. Hence it is
suggested by INDO HERBS, that good drainage system is
to be regularly maintained.

16 HOEING AND Two-three weeding are required during entire crop period as
WEEDING per requirements.

17 HARVESTING This crop bloom at first watering. harvesting should be done

in month of February. Duration of harvesting is 8 – 9 months.
Care is to be taken during harvesting as to avoid injury to
crop.

18 YIELD The yield (in KGS.) per acre is as follows:

1. Fresh roots app. 2,800 KGS.
2. Dried roots (app. 18%) app. 550 KGS.

19 RATE OF YIELD 1. Fresh roots RS. 150.00 / Kg
