Byron and Jill discuss their lack of relationship experience. Byron has only acted in a high school play and has not had sex, while Jill's long term relationship recently ended when her boyfriend left her. They agree that being single has advantages like freedom and not having to consider another person. However, they also express nerves about the sexually explicit scenes they will need to film. Jill reassures Byron that if he looks into her eyes during filming, they can trust and support each other to feel confident in their performance.

Skin Flick by Norm Foster
Act 2
Daphne and Alex exit up the stairs.
ByronShooting for real. JillYep. ByronI’m sorry about the couch thing. JillThat’s okay. ByronI’ll try and be more careful from now on. JillDon’t worry about it. ByronI’m a little nervous, I guess. I’m out of my element here. This isn’t really my bailiwick, you know? Acting. Having sex. JillSo, you really haven’t done it much? ByronOnce. A high-school production of Oklahoma!. 82 JillI meant the sex. ByronSo did I. JillSo you haven’t had a girlfriend since then? ByronNo, I had a girlfriend. But no sex. She said she was saving herself for marriage. Turned out she was saving herself for a truck driver from Chicoutimi. She broke up with me over his two- way radio. She said we were over. And out. JillAnd you didn’t see it coming? ByronNo. Not at all. In fact, I was like God to her. JillReally? ByronOh yeah. She’d say things like, “God, you’re so stupid.” JillThat’s funny. ByronWell, you have to be able to laugh about these things, right? JillRight. ByronWhat about you? No boyfriend? JillNot right now. I was seeing this one guy for a couple of years but we broke it off a few months ago. ByronOh. What happened? JillNothing. We just decided it was time to move on. 83 ByronSo it was a mutual parting of the ways. JillRight. ByronUh-huh. JillWhat’s wrong? ByronNothing. It’s just that I think there’s always one person who does a little more of the leaving than the other. But I suppose it’s possible to be equally agreeable about a breakup sometimes. I mean, what do I know? JillIt was him. He did more of the leaving. ByronI see. JillActually, he did all of the leaving. ByronWas it another woman? JillNo. It was just me. I guess I wasn’t the one. You men are always looking for “the one,” isn’t that right? ByronWhat? No? JillYou’re not? ByronNo, I thought it was women who were always looking for the one. JillNo. We’re just looking for someone. We’re not looking for the one. 84 ByronOh. JillYeah, we find someone and then we change him into the one. It didn’t work on my last guy, though. He was trying to change me. ByronWhat didn’t he like about you? JillI don’t know. Out-of-work actress, chip on my shoulder, unusually lengthy PMS. I thought that spelled dream girl. But it’s okay. I don’t mind being on my own. ByronNo, I don’t mind being alone either. JillNo one to answer to. ByronYou can come and go as you please. JillNo one else’s feelings to consider. ByronYou do what makes you happy. JillNo one hogging the covers in bed. ByronBecause you’re in bed all by yourself.
Jill and Byron think about this for a moment.
JillYeah, we’re much better off.
ByronAbsolutely. (beat)So, have you done many of these types of films? JillThis is my first. 85 ByronReally? That surprises me. JillWhy? ByronWell, you don’t seem too inhibited. You seem pretty relaxed. JillYeah, well, we haven’t gotten naked yet. Being naked in front of a camera is going to be a whole different story. ByronAre you worried about that? JillAre you kidding? I haven’t worked out in a while. When the clothes come off there’s no telling where things will fall. ByronI think you’ve got a lovely body. JillYou do? ByronI think it’s beautiful. JillWell thank you. ByronIt will be an honour to be on top of it. JillWell, aren’t you sweet? ByronI’m just being truthful. Jill…So, you’re a bookie, huh? ByronYeah. JillYou don’t seem the type. 86 ByronThat’s what everyone says. I should probably find another line of work but it’s the only thing I know how to do. Well, that and being a porn star. They laugh. JillYou’re kinda cute, Byron, you know that? ByronWell, like you said, the clothes haven’t come off yet. We’ll see how you feel about me when that’s staring you in the face. Jill…When what’s staring me… ByronMy naked body! When my entire naked body is staring you in the… you know? JillAre you worried about your appearance? ByronWell, that’s one worry I have. The biggest worry of course is whether or not I’ll be able to… you know? When they call “action!” I hope I’ll be able to provide some. JillOh, you’ll be fine. ByronYou think so? JillJust keep looking into my eyes. ByronYour eyes? JillYeah, it’s what actors do when they’re performing. They look into each other’s eyes. They trust one another and they get their confidence from each other. 87 ByronOh. JillSo just keep looking into my eyes. That’s if you can see my eyes from where you are. Daphne enters on the stairs.
