Look and study these examples situation and try to answer the questions:

What was she doing? or What did she do?

Jane was using the computer The phone rang Jane answered the phone

What was Jane doing when the phone rang? What did Jane do when the phone rang?
Jane was using the computer She answered the phone

Pronoun + to be (past) + verb –ing Pronoun + verb in simple past

+ I was speaking with him. + I spoke with him


- you weren’t speaking anything. - You didn’t speak anything
? Did we speak with them?
? Were we speaking with them?
*en una oración en negación e interrogación debes usar el auxiliar
did / did not (didn’t) y el verbo debe quedar en presente.

Suffix *ing= sufijo “ando, endo” in Spanish *irregular verbs: I spoke (speak – spoke – spoken)
*regular verbs: verb + ed: I worked

 We use the Past Progressive Tense to talk about actions happening at a specific time in the
past:
For example: I was waiting for the bus at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
 We use the Simple past to express an action which began and finished in the past. We use the
regular and irregular verbs:
For example: Yesterday, it rained all morning. It stopped at lunchtime.

 Don’t forget the answer questions in a short form:


For example:
Was she cooking dinner? Yes, she was. / No, she wasn’t.
Did you watch the film on TV last night? Yes, I did. / No, I didn’t.

When / while:
 We can connect the short and longer actions with when and while.
 WHEN can come before the shorter action in the simple past or longer action in the past
progressive:
For example: Sarah was climbing when she fell.
When Sarah was climbing, she fell.
 WHILE must always come before the longer actions which happen at the same time in the
past progressive:
For example: Dad arrived home while we were playing.
while we were making pizza, Steve went to buy.
