QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CONFLICT IN UKRAINE AND RUSSIA

1. Why did the conflict between Ukraine and Russia begin?
A/ The Russian Federation illegally annexed the Crimean peninsula in 2014, which is not
internationally recognized. On February 24, 2022, Russia attacked Ukraine from the north,
northeast, and the Crimean peninsula in the south, starting a war between Russia and
Ukraine.

2. Does the crisis on the Crimean peninsula in 2014 have any relation to the current
tension?
R/ Yes, put in 2014, Crimea became the focus of one of the worst crises between Russia
and the West since the Cold War, after the then president of Ukraine, the pro-Russian
Viktor Yanukovych, was overthrown after a series of pro-European protests.
The Ukrainian people were divided between those who wanted greater integration with
Russia and those who supported a greater alliance with the European Union (EU), and they
surely intervened.
According to the Kremlin, Yanukovych had sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir
Putin requesting an intervention to restore order in Ukraine.
But Putin had already made a decision that few expected.
For much of February 2014, the Russian president had been quietly sending thousands of
additional troops to bases that Russia had in Crimea thanks to the 1997 Partition Treaty.

3. Why is it convenient for Russia to have separatist territories?

R/ It is convenient for Russia that there are independence movements in Ukrainian places,
such as Donetsk and Lugansk, which is why it has kept the conflict alive by supporting
them militarily and economically.

4. Is there an invasion environment?

A/ Yes, although Russia has declared that it has not invaded Ukraine, they have resorted to
using weapons and the army to attack Ukraine, which has left thousands of deaths, both
soldiers and innocent citizens.

5. What is the role of the media? Is the information being exaggerated?

A/ We must bear in mind that each media outlet is part of the government, which is why it
can be used for misinformation and manipulation of the nation.

6. Is there a possibility that nuclear weapons will be used?

R/ As for Ukraine, the possibility is minimal, since a few years ago the United States
pressured that country to deliver nuclear weapons to Russia, for which they ran out of
ammunition, due to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty; If this had not happened, Russia
would have been more strategic because they would have the uncertainty that they could
launch a bomb or a missile at Russia.
As for Russia, the possibility is not ruled out since it has more supplies of it, which leaves
Ukraine unprotected.

7. What are the interests of the United States in Ukraine?

R/ His greatest interest is not to let Russia take over Ukraine, since Russia can generate
conflicts or interests of other countries to take over other parts, generating both commercial
and social effects, in addition to great environmental damage and deaths of innocent
citizens.

8. Could this be the start of World War III?

R/ There is a great possibility that this will happen, because it is like countries against
countries and those with more countries or more strength will win, Russia decided to
invade Ukraine with the military which gives an indication of war, and there will be
countries that will support Russia and others to Ukraine, for example, sending soldiers,
weapons and ammunition, which could generate a dispute between countries affecting the
trade of products and the world economy.

9. Does the conflict between Russia and Ukraine affect Colombia?

R/ Their greatest participation would be in trade, since Russia and Ukraine are a great
power in terms of exports of aces, grains and oil, which would generate an increase in
transportation and therefore an increase in the family basket.
As a war, Colombia does not necessarily have to be involved as long as President Iván
Duque does not make decisions to support a country with military bases.

10. How is the current situation in Kyiv and Kharkiv, the two largest cities in Ukraine?
R/ They have been invaded or militarized by Russia to take power from them, leaving
deaths, injuries and many migrants

11. What is Vladimir Putin looking for?

R/ Want OTAN to stop expanding.

12. What is the balance of military forces in Russia and Ukraine?

R/ Ukraine's forces barely exceed the number of troops Russia has deployed on its borders:
196,000 armed forces personnel, 900,000 reservists and 100,000 from other forces,
according to the IISS.

13. Is the attack the prelude to an occupation?

R/Well, up to now, Putin has mentioned that he does not want to create a war, but rather to
demilitarize the country, but if the deaths continue to occur and countries allied to Ukraine
and Russia intervene, a war could break out.

R/14. Will the West intervene militarily on Ukraine's behalf?

R/ Ukraine is not part of NATO, therefore they are not obliged to send troops or defend that
country militarily, but there is the possibility that these countries may intervene in alliance
with Ukraine and support the citizens.
15. What sanctions will the West impose?
R / The allies have made it clear that they will be forceful in the response, which will be of
sufficient intensity to harm the future prosperity of Russia, according to some Western
leaders. There are several courses of action. One, financial, with the aim of cutting off the
access of Russian banking entities to the capital markets; another, commercial, blocking
exports of cutting-edge technology. A third is personal sanctions against high
representatives of the Russian regime, such as those that have already occurred after
Moscow recognized the independence of the separatist territories of Donbas. 70% of
Russian banks and state-owned companies will be subject to sanctions, as agreed by the
European Council. Crude oil and airline exports will prevent Russian industry from
improving its assets. In another section, Germany has announced the suspension of the
authorization process for the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, a work
already completed but not activated that would redouble the direct supply from Russia to
Germany bypassing the countries of Eastern Europe.

16. How can Russia respond?

A/ The most important weapon at the Kremlin's disposal against the EU is gas supply.
According to data provided by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der
Leyen, at the Munich Security Conference, 24% of the total energy mix in the EU
corresponds to gas, 90% of which is imported. Russia supplies 40%. Faced with a wave of
Western sanctions, Moscow can play with gas, both with supply alterations and with an
abrupt cut

17. What international support does Russia have?

R/ Russia is confident that the increasingly close relationship with China, in any case, is
likely that China can be an economic-technological alternative for Russia in the face of the
isolation it will suffer from the West.

18. What is at stake beyond Ukraine?

R/ Mainly the life of the citizens of both Russia and Ukraine, but also the economic budget
and the commercial disorder of the world, in addition to the environmental damage and also
the relations between countries.
