Electronic Air Regulation System
Introduction
This presentation contains general information for electronic air
regulation systems used on Atlas Copco Drilling Solutions drills.
Refer to the parts book for parts and schematics specific to your drill.
Refer to EARS Manual for future reference.

Electronic Air Regulation System
System Components
The flow sensor is mounted below the butterfly valve and detects the volume
of air flowing into the compressor and sends the data to the MC2 controller.

Electronic Air Regulation System
System Components
The Butterfly Valve and Actuator are controlled to regulate air flow into the
compressor. The indicator is horizontal when closed and vertical at full open.
The butterfly valve should be closed at start up and slightly open during
minimum air.

The vent valve and actuator are controlled to vent air to lower receiver tank
pressure. The vent valve is used during minimum air, pressure regulation,
emergency venting and shutdown. Closed during normal regulating mode.

MC2 Controller monitors the flow and pressure inputs, operator inputs and
engine data. It controls the butterfly valve and vent valve actuators to achieve
the required flow and pressure.

The Flow Pot (standard) or Buttons (RCS) provide the MC2 with a flow target.
The Compressor On/“Off” Switch commands the controller to minimum in the “off” position.
The Throttle On/Off Switch commands the controller to high or low throttle
The error codes are displayed on the powerview or RCS screen.

Speed Sensors – (Used on Some Installations –TH60)
Determines the speed of a component associated with compressor rotation
to determine the speed of the compressor or to check for correct
transmission gear selection. If the wrong gear is selected the error code 8
will flash and the compressor will be commanded to minimum.
Speed Sensor
16
Electronic Air Regulation System
System Components
Engagement Sensor – (Used on Some Installations – TH60)
Detects if compressor drive line components are engaged.
Engagement Sensor
17
Electronic Air Regulation System
System Components
J1939 CAN Bus
The system monitors engine speed to determine if the compressor is turning
and more importantly when it is shutting down. The engine speed, along
with the key switch, engagement sensor and shaft speed sensor, tells the
system when to enter regulating mode and when to enter shut down mode.
On Diesel and RCS machines, if J1939 is lost the system will not enter
regulating mode, instead it will enter the “rumble” mode.
On Non-RCS electric machines a signal from the contactor in the starter is
used in place of the J1939 signal
18
Electronic Air Regulation System
System Components
J1939 CAN Bus
A 120 Ohm terminating resistor must be located at both ends of
the CAN Bus to suppress noise. Normally one is located at the
engine and one at the Murphy gauge or RCS display.

Electronic Fan Regulation System
Compressor Temperature
Hydraulic Temperature
Engine Coolant Temperature – J1939
Engine Intake Manifold Temperature – J1939
The controller works to minimize the fan speed required while keeping all of the
temperatures below the temperature set-points for the particular systems.
20
Electronic Fan Regulation System
The temperature of the compressor oil in the discharge pipe, the hydraulic oil in
the return manifold, and the engine coolant temp and intake manifold temp
received from the J1939 can be monitored by the MC2 controller.

21
Electronic Fan Regulation System
The fan speed control valve is controlled by the MC2 controller. It regulates
the fan speed over a fixed range. The valve reduces the fan speed as the
current signal from controller increases. The fan speed defaults to maximum in
the event of a EFR failure.

to the controller. If this square turns gray and a message appears saying
“Unexpected loss of communication”. Hit OK then disconnect and reconnect the
USB cable to reset your connection
(The controller does not stop communicating with the EAR system only the USB to the
Laptop is lost when this message is displayed.)

13. Check controller inputs and outputs using measure group.
Max Working pressure: 115 psi – LP 370 or 355 – HP
Pressure Sensor: +/- 5 psi

System Inspection
14. Verify the Compressor On/Off complies with the switch position.
On position = True, Off position = False.
45
Electronic Air Regulation System
System Inspection
15. The Flow Pot (PSI) should read range from 2.5 to 14.7psi when turned
from minimum to maximum (CW).
16. The Pressure Pot (PSI) should range from 30-115psi for LP
90-355 or 370 for HP.
46
Electronic Air Regulation System
Post Software Installation
17. Verify “Error State” box reads “Default State” and no light is flashing.
For example if a pressure sensor is not connected or has a short the error
state will be “P Sensor” and the corresponding error code 3 will flash.
Note: A wrong parameter will not always set off error codes so check
closely and fix before operation. See following slides for details:
47
Electronic Air Regulation System
Post Software Installation
18. After initial checks are done with the software check the actuators for
correct functioning.
Connect the EARS tester box in line with actuator. Command to
open in fast mode. The actuator should move 90 degrees counter
clockwise to the open position (vertical). Command closed and the
actuator should move 90 degrees clockwise to the closed position
(horizontal).
Remove the tester and reconnect cable to actuator
# 2657817579
Note: When programming is complete and all actuators work properly the
initial set up of the EARS is complete. Do not start the machine until all
errors have been cleared and all tests are completed.

Electronic Air Regulation System
Troubleshooting
Self Diagnostics:
The system detects various types of problems and flashes a code to alert the
operator or technician. The system can detect 11 error/fault conditions. The
light will flash for 1 second in 1 second intervals with a 2 second delay before
restarting the error code. The specific error code can be found by counting
flashes. DO NOT RUN MACHINE WHEN AN ERROR CODE IS FLASHING
Only one error code can be flashed at a time. The lower the error code the
higher the priority.

Electronic Air Regulation System
Troubleshooting
When the test box is installed, the EAR system no longer has control of the
actuator.
Extreme caution should be exercised if the compressor or engine must be
run while the test box is installed.
Closing the butterfly valve while the compressor is turning can result in
compressor damage. Insure minimum pressure is maintained at all times.
Opening the receiver tank vent valve too quickly while the compressor is
making high volumes of air can result in damage to the separator elements.

Troubleshooting
Actuator Test
Make sure the white line on the actuator indicator knob is lined up with the scribed
mark on the actuator. (This requires removing the indicator knob) Also verify that the
vent valve or butterfly valve is lined up with the actuator.
Connect the tester inline with the actuator and command it to open (CCW) on fast.
The actuator should rotate CCW to the open (vertical).
Command actuator to closed (CW) on fast. The actuator should rotate 90deg CW to
the closed (horizontal) position.
The slow speed can be used to test for high friction and binding.
The actuator should move smoothly with a steady buzzing sound.
64
Electronic Air Regulation System
Troubleshooting
If the actuator does not operate in accordance with the tester or the full 90deg possible
causes are:
1.The heater circuit is wired backwards. (This problem does not affect operation of the
system. It should however be corrected. Use the schematic and connector pin
diagrams to diagnose and correct)
2. The limit switch or limit switch cams have come loose or are set incorrectly (It will be
necessary diagnose and repair. Remove the cover and correct the problem)
3. Something inside the valve is stopping the actuator. (It will be necessary to remove the
actuator from the valve to isolate this cause then diagnose and repair the problem)
4. The actuator has broken internal gears or other mechanical problems. (It will be
necessary to remove the actuator from the valve to isolate this cause then diagnose
and repair the problem,)
If the actuator does not stop in the horizontal position after moving clockwise and in the
vertical position after moving counter clockwise the internal cams will need to be
adjusted. (In factory reject actuator)
