Review Questions
1. Why is interface design often referred to as dialog design?
Because the interaction is much like a dialog between the user and the computer, user-interface design
is often referred to as dialog design
2. What is the technique that shows a sequence of sketches of the display screen during a
dialogue?
Story board
3. What is meant by the user experience? How does the user interface relate to it?
User experience is how a person feels when interfacing with a system. The system could be a
website, a web application or desktop software and, in modern contexts, is generally denoted by some
form of human-computer interaction (HCI)
4. What is meant by usability and why is it important for user-interface design?
Usability is a measure of how well a specific user in a specific context can use a product/design to
achieve a defined goal effectively, efficiently and satisfactorily. Designers usually measure a design’s
usability throughout the development process—from wireframes to the final deliverable—to ensure
maximum usability.
5. What are human-interface objects? Give someexamples.
Human-interface objects are separate and distinct from the objects found in object-oriented
systems. These objects include folders, documents, buttons, menus, and boxes.
6. Give several examples of feedback. Why is it important?
Example 1: Employee is working overtime

Romila has had a positive attitude about working overtime to meet a client's needs. In your feedback,
show how much you appreciate her extra effort.
Feedback: "Thank you for putting in the extra effort during this busy time. The client truly appreciates
it and your positive attitude has helped us all stay motivated."
Example 2: Employee is contributing to meetings

During meetings, Raj has shared many new ideas that are helpful for the team. Let him know how this
is beneficial.
Feedback: "Thank you for being prepared for our meetings. By coming to each meeting with thoughtful
ideas, you help us improve our processes."
Example 3: Employee is submitting high-quality work

Ava finished all her work on time and paid attention to the details. Provide positive feedback to keep
her motivated.
Feedback: "Ava, your work looks great! It is clear that you care about your work, and I appreciate that
you asked the client about their design preferences before creating their website."
Example 4: Employee needs a boost in morale

You can tell that Robin has been lacking confidence lately. Telling him what he is good at can help him
feel more comfortable in his role.
Feedback: "You have been doing a great job lately. Thank you for being so flexible with projects and
working hard to support your team members."
Example 5: Employee has new responsibilities

Avijit recently got a promotion and is handling his new responsibilities well. Give feedback that lets
him know he was the right choice for the position.
Feedback: "Promoting you to lead graphic designer was the best choice for our company. I am glad to
see you are challenging yourself and are open to more responsibilities. Management knew your strong
attention to detail would make you the right candidate for this role."
Feedback is a vital part of any leader’s skillset. Project managers, team leaders, teachers, coaches de-
velop this skill over the course of their careers. Not just giving feedback, but also receiving it is essen-
tial for efficiently sharing information within teams and groups. Let’s take a closer look at its value and
learn how to get better at providing it.
Constructive feedback is a robust tool for creating a healthy environment, boosting productivity and en-
gagement, and achieving better results. It positively influences communication, team members’ interac-
tion and teamwork results in different fields.
7. What is storyboarding?
Storyboarding is showing a sequence of sketches of the display screen during a dialog.

A storyboard is a visual outline of a film (be it a short film or feature film) or animation. It's an
important part of the preproduction process and consists of a series of images that show everything
that's going to happen in your finished piece
Problems and Exercises

1. Visit some Web sites and then identify all the controls used for navigation and input. Are they
all obvious? Discuss some differences in visibility and affordance among the controls. In your
opinion, list the qualities of a good website and list the weaknesses of a poorly designed website.
Are they all obvious:

No, Many sites have good visibility and affordance , but sometimes there are certain controls that do
not work even after clicking and some controls do not function according to their appearance. For
instance, some check-boxes are not active until the user reads all the agreement terms.

Websites may have many clickable objects. when proper clues are not given then it is difficult
to tell which objects can be clicked and which
cannot be clicked.
Many objects do not indicate that they have been It is not always simple to tell what the controls do,
clicked. whether they go to another part of the current
page, to another page at the same site, or to
another site altogether.
2. Evaluate the course registration system at your college. List the basic steps of a user’s dialog
with the system. What are some of the problems with the system from the perspective of ease of
learning and ease of use? In what ways is the system inflexible? In what ways is needed
information not available? Is too much information provided that distracts from the task at
hand? Do you think the registration system at Cambrian College is easy to use for new students?
What type of enhancements would you do?
Steps:
1. Select the group or class for students to join.
2. Check for a convenient time and select.
3. Check the course details and duration.
4. Verify the fee details.
5. Enter the name and basic details of the student.
6. Click on the registration button.
Problems:
Issues related to ease of learning: Sometime the system is not User friendly and becomes complex
while registering.
Issues related to ease of use: The navigation to work links are confusing.
In what ways is the system inflexible

The system is not flexible to work on all operating system.

Is too much information provided that distracts from the task at hand:
Yes.
Do you think the registration system at Cambrian College is easy to use for new students:
Absolutely, it is very convenient and easy to use , as it is user friendly and fully explained. The user
interface is very simple and easy to understand .
3. Select one Web site with direct customer ordering. Browse through some product descriptions
and note the design of the dialog and the Web pages. What do you like and dislike about the
design? Evaluate the Web site based on visibility and affordance. Does the site achieve an optimal
balance between the number of page refreshes and the delay between page refreshes? Would your
answer change if you were using a different computing device, a different network, or accessing
the system at a different time of day?
The observation and evaluations after going through the website are as follows:
Like: The Design’s color combination is appropriately chosen and very appealing.
Dislike : The website’s pop up window, which pops up when the website has loaded.
Talking in terms of visibility and affordance, the website has icons and buttons that are very user
friendly, interactive , simple and easy to follow up.
