(Inquiries, Investigation, Immersion)

Worksheet No. 7

Learner’s Name: ________________________________________________

Grade Level/Section:________________________________________________
Date: ________________________________________________

I. LEARNING SKILLS
A. Most Essential Learning Competency
Describes adequately research design either quantitative or qualitative
research
B. Objective
Describes adequately the research design either Qualitative or Quantitative
research.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

This module will enlighten you to become successful in understanding data

and data collection. In this connection, you are welcome in this Week 6 – Research
Design lessons.

Qualitative and Quantitative Research designs are the primarily focus of this
learning activity sheet which is exploratory research that will help spell the target of
the academic research.

Qualitative research is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons,

opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop
ideas or hypotheses for potential quantitative research. It is also used to uncover
trends in thought and opinions, and dive deeper into the problem. Qualitative data
collection methods vary using unstructured or semi-structured techniques. Some
common methods include focus groups (group discussions), individual interviews,
and participation/observations. The sample size is typically small, and respondents
are selected to fulfill a given quota.

While Quantitative research design uses numerical data, where findings are
tabulated, computed, interpreted, inferred, and presented in a quantified manner.

1
Examples of qualitative methods or designs are ethnography, narrative,
phenomenological, grounded theory, and case study. John Creswell outlines these
five methods in Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design. While Quantitative
research designs are as follows: experimental, historical, descriptive correlational,
causal-comparative/quasi-experimental research.

Vocabulary Builder
1. Research design - is the framework of research methods and techniques
chosen by a researcher (https://www.questionpro.com/blog/research-
design).
2. Qualitative Research - involves collecting and analyzing non-numerical
data (e.g., text, video, or audio) to understand concepts, opinions, or
experiences. It can be used to gather in-depth insights into a problem or
generate new ideas for research
(https://www.scribbr.com/methodology/qualitative-research).
3. Quantitative Research - involves the use of computational, statistical,
and mathematical tools to derive results
(https://www.sisinternational.com/what-is-quantitative-research/).

III. ACTIVITIES
A. Practice Task
Task 1.
Based from what you have learned previously, decide as to which do
these methods belong. Then arrange them by writing in the columns provided.

Ethnography, Narrative, Phenomenological, Grounded theory, Case study,

Experimental, Historical, Descriptive Correlational, Causal-comparative/Quasi-
experimental research.

QUALITATIVE QUANTITATIVE

2
Task 2. Identification of appropriate Research Design.
Why there is a need to identify research method that is appropriate to your
study? Give your justification/s.

Task 3. Identify what kind of research design do the following research

problems belong.
a) The Learning Styles of Grade 12-GAS Students: Its Effect to Academic
Performance
