ABSTRACT
For the last about two and half decades minicomputers are finding increasing use for the
control and operation of analytical instruments. This role is shared by dedicated
microprocessors during the last more than a decade. Applications of computers to
spectroscopy, electro analytical chemistry, Fourier transform techniques, mass spectrometry ,
gas chromatography, rapid-reaction kinetics, equilibrium constants, and studies of analytical
methods and to literature searching, has brought in significant advancement in the field of
chemistry. Dedicated stand-alone computers, networking of computers and introduction of
computers in multiple user laboratory has strongly supported in mechanization, storage &
handling of large volume of data, statistical processing and sharing of information in soft form
among the scientists and labs.
Analytical chemist in DAE is in the forefront of the race to use computers in laboratory
work. Control laboratory of NFC has large number of analytical instruments, hence automated
procedures for handling the huge amount of data have become vital. The appropriate
combination of instruments and computers has offered a way of easing the burden on the
analysis, as well as optimizing the performance of the analytical instruments. Computer systems
can be applied to all the major analytical instrument procedures, and many of the leading
instrument manufacturers are developing and producing systems for use in the
laboratory/industry, both for data acquisition and for control purposes.
Control Lab, NFC carries out analyses of more than a lakh number of parameters.
Hence it is planned to establish a Local Area Networking in the Laboratory. To start with it is
planned to inter connect the computers within the Laboratory premises with a nodal server. The
scheme is based on Oracle Database (commonly referred to as Oracle RDBMS). It is a
proprietary multi-model database management system produced and marketed
by Oracle Corporation. We are obtaining license for use in our networking system. Oracle
Database is the primary database which is being used for large data processing, due to its
adaptability and practical approach to handle data and software applications to store and
recover related data. Structured Query Language (SQL) is the set of statements with which all
programs and users access data in an Oracle database. We also have plan to take the data
directly from instruments through RS 232 communication system to the network system.
This article details about importance of the computers in analytical chemistry, various
aspects of microprocessors, dedicated computers and introduction of LAN in the laboratory.
