An Overview on the Teaching of the Macro Skills: Productive and
Receptive Skills
IV. Assessment: Answer the following questions in not more than 300 words
except number 3.Your output shall be evaluated using these criteria:
In productive skills, speaking and writing are active forms of learning. The content
that they produced is either verbal or written. We can learn language through
poems by simply speaking and writing it on our own perception while in receptive
skills, reading and listening are important skills that all students should master
when learning a new language, they must understand it and comprehend while
reading. These two skills are important to language learning because it enhances
our knowledge and capabilities to produce language. It also improved our reading
comprehension and communication skills. The aim of teaching receptive skills is to
help the learners develop the necessary skills to understand and interpret spoken or
written materials, productive skills is also important because written and spoken
communication are basic life skills. In real life, people generally may need to
inform, convince, or share ideas. Both skills are important to language learning,
they are connected with each other because you cannot learn or produce language
if you will not able to understand and comprehend it. Reading aids in improving
grammar and vocabulary skills while listening aids in understanding a language
better. Furthermore these skills aid in the use of productive skills meaning that all
skills form a unity when used equally, thus, resulting in more smoothly and easily
of learning a language. Both skills are important for us to communicate successfully
and also it is important because they surround the world and can be used for
purpose and entertainment. In language, productive skills are speaking and writing.
These skills are very important because learners need to articulate words and write
to produce language. ... Good command on speaking skills develops a sense of
progress among learners and boosts their confidence inside and outside the
classroom. Receptive skills comprise reading and listening. They are important
because they allow learners to understand contents, textbooks, works or
documents.
2. How did you know if your student receptive language skills are
developed or not? Explain.
In typical development, children are able to understand language before they are
able to produce it. I’ll know how my student receptive language skills are developed
if once they are able to comprehend and understand the words they hear or read if
not, then my student have receptive language difficulties or disorder because it
might be too hard for them to understand the language. Receptive skills involve a
person learning to follow directions and through this, I would able to know that my
student receptive skills are developed if it’s easy for them to follow direction that
doesn’t need visual prompt. For example, I ask someone to give me some coffee
and put it on my table without showing what coffee looks like, then he/she will
surely give the coffee that I ask and put it on my table, if I notice that the words I
said doesn’t sink in to his/her mind and he/she give me water instead of coffee,
then that very moment I thought that his/her receptive language skills are not well-
developed. Another thing is that, if my student can understand what gesture means
that it is easy for them to catch up. Children who have understanding difficulties
may find it challenging to follow instructions at home or within the educational
setting and may not respond appropriately to questions and requests. I’ll know my
student receptive language skills are not developed if they are not able to engage
with social interaction with others (either verbally or non-verbally), to compromise
with others, and be able to recognize and follow social norms. Another things that
I’ll know if my student receptive skills are not developed, if they are not willing to
join in such self-motivated activities that are normally associated with pleasure and
enjoyment that could make them felt relieve, have difficulty attending and listening.

V. Enrichment Activity:
Expressive language skill is our ability to communicate our thoughts and feelings
through words, gestures, signs, and/or symbols. It can be as simple as pointing to
a desired object or as complex as writing a book about an area of interest. Talking
is the main form of communication people think about when discussing expressive
language.
Expressive language skills as a whole means using the unique areas of language
correctly to effectively communicate what we’re thinking.
