Article Review – Employee Motivation

One of the most important roles of HR department is to keep the employees always

motivated in order to have a satisfactory or even high performance from them. Moreover,

keeping the motivated employees reduce turnover, so it reduce costs to the organization. In other

words, one of the major roles of HR department is to guarantee that workers be motivated in

order to the organization have a better profit due to their high performances and reduce costs due

to a low turnover. In this article, I will discuss three articles about this hot topic that has been

discussed over the last years, how to motivate an employee and how much important it is.

Demotivated employee can bring lots of problems for the company and the company has to

identify sings of demotivated workforce. We can identify such signs of demotivation when we

see that our workforce is having a lack of commitment, low productivity, high absenteeism, and

so on.

According to the article, “employee motivation – An HR function”, to retain staff and

encourage them to give their best, it is required from HR department some special attention

about financial, psychological and physiological of rewards that are offered over the time to

employees keep motivated.

Employees need to see their wages as both fair and just, otherwise, there will be

demotivation. However, the article states that we cannot see the money as a factor of motivation.

There are other factors that influence the motivation of a worker. Money can be seen as a short-

term motivator since we as human beings always want more than we have, so, for example, an

employee receive a rise from $800, 00 to $1.200, 00, he will get very satisfied for a while,

however, over the years, he will change his customs and standard of life such as buying a better

car, better cloths, going to more fancy restaurants and so on. So, this same employee, who was

very motivated some months ago, will fill the need of another wage rise, because he is now

spending more money. Thus, he will not be as motivated as before.

My second article is a video I watched on Youtube.com, this video is called “Leadership

training on motivating employees” by Leadership IQ. According to the speaker, there are ways to

motivate high, middle and low performers, but he explained to how motivate middle performers.

He stated that 10% of middle performers give their best to be top performers, but they simply

cannot. On the other hand, 90% of middle performers choose not to be a high performance. One

of the problems is that there is no a clear criteria to describe what a high performance is. So,

middle performers need to understand what a high performance is, what the middle performers

need to do to become a high performer. In this case, he states that with a simple incentive from

bosses can raise the levels of middle performers. Managers can say them that they are not middle

performers, they are top performers, they can do a better job, they can raise their levels, and they

have ability to do so. Researches demonstrate that this can rise a performance from 30 % to

150%. Sometimes, middle performers just need somebody else say them they are high

performance and also give them an opportunity to prove they can have a high-performance.

My third article is about 5 ways to motivate and demotivate employees. According to

this article, 5 ways that can motivate employees are: Align individual economic interests with

company performance, take a real interest in the career of employees and show how they can

achieve this, demonstrate they are concerned about their work-life balance, giving the flexibility

of work hours. Moreover, listening is a good tool to be used by employers. Employees

appreciate when employers listen to them to talk about family issues,

As we could see through these three articles, motivation is not about a huge change in the

company. Motivation is about changing little things like perceptions and some basic behaviors

like being more talkative, friendly and careful about giving the right attention for your

performers and knowing how to motivate them according to their performances. Money is a

short-term motivator, so it is important that we can find other tools to motivate our

employees.

It is very important that companies keep employees always motivated. This is not a new

trend, we have been pursuing this over the years, but we have struggled to do so. It is very

complex, because it involves more than financial and good performances. It involves welfare,

psychological and physiological factors that the HR personnel needs to pay a close attention.
