Model ZAL
Introduction
Free Area
Free area is derived by taking the total open area of a louver (after
subtracting all obstructions - blades and frame) and dividing by the overall
wall opening.

ZAL-S
Frames and blades of extruded aluminium sections or galvanized steel both available
upon request
Knowing the flow rate and the recommended velocity the free area
can be determined as
A = Q/v , entering the table at the nearest smaller area the W & H
of the louver may be chosen
Or ,
Knowing the louver size WxH , the free area A is known from the
table , the velocity will be calculated as
V = Q/A
For the face velocity A the pressure drop across the louver is
plotted in chart 1

Example 1
Given air flow rate of 1500 cfm select a louver size
Dividing flow rate by free area velocity (let say 600 fpm )
Free area = 2.5 ft2 , from the table above , 34”X 22” will be the least louver satisfy the
desired free velocity
Check for pressure drop across the louver at 597 fpm from chart 1 = 0.06 Wg “
Example 2
Knowing louver size as 24”X28” determine the maximum flow rate
For velocity 800 fpm the flow rate = 2.28X 800 = 1824 cfm
Check for pressure drop across the louver at 800 fpm from chart 1 = 0.14 Wg “
