Flood in Kuantan
As I walked through the knee-high water, to which the
clogged drainage was no match, I saw my community in its most desperate state. I could see the kids, shivering and crying, and their parents, praying for their home in fear. However, one thing that made the whole situation worse was the lightning, with its strong flashes of light in the inky, midnight sky. At that moment, it seemed like my town, Kuantan had fallen to the ever so frightening Pahang river. However, the worst was yet to come.
Despite our area being extremely flood prone, none of us
could've predicted what would happen next. We were always ready for the light floods that occurred every now and then. Generally, floods that were much less severe than this would be during the heavy monsoon rains.
As a new day emerged, the problems did not seem to get
better. It was still raining cats and dogs and this resulted in several issues. Soon, houses were inundated, landslides began to wreak havoc, people were trapped in their cars and animals were forced to flee from the forest a few miles away. When the rain did not cease after a few days, most people realised that it would get worse. People began to take shelter in a secondary school in the second day of never-ending rain. At that point, it got so bad that trees were uprooted and whole roofs of houses were ripped off. Most residents lost their livelihood and many lost a vast chunk of their belongings and money. By the end of the day, everyone was in low spirits as they were sulking over this tragedy that destroyed their homes. Thankfully, the government answered our prayers and various authorities were brought into play to assist and help the people.
Despite a couple of more days of destruction and tragedy,
the rains had stopped, nearly a week after the first day. When the sun finally rose for the first time, it brought a glimmer of hope into the dejected faces of the people. I had never thought that the rising of the sun would bring me that much joy. Finally, life was back to normal.
