Parts of a Fraction:
numerator
The numerator shows how many parts you have.

This numerator shows there is one part.

denominator
The denominator shows how many parts the

whole is divided into.

This fraction shows it is divided into two parts.

What are the Fractions?
In Mathematics, fractions are represented as a numerical value, which

defines a part of a whole. A fraction can be a portion or section of any

quantity out of a whole, where the whole can be any number, a specific

value, or a thing.

Let us understand this concept using an example.

Example#1 The following figure shows a pizza that is

divided into 8 equal parts.

Now, if we want to express one selected

part of the pizza, we can express it as 1/8

which shows that out of 8 equal parts, we

are referring to 1 part.

It means one in eight equal parts. It can also be

read as:

One-eighth, or
1
1 by 8.
8
Types of Fractions:
proper fraction
Proper fractions are the fractions in which the numerator is less than

its denominator.

for example:
5 3 2 smaller

7 8 5 larger

and so on are proper fractions.

improper fraction
An improper fraction is the type of fraction in which the numerator

is more than or equal to its denominator.

for example:

4 5 8 larger

3 2 5
smaller

and so on.
mixed fractions
A mixed fraction is a mixture of a whole number and a proper

fraction.

proper fraction
1 1
3 5 whole number
4 3

5 is the whole number and 1/3 is the proper fraction and so on.
How to multiply Fractions?
steps:
1. Multiply the numerators.

2. Multiply the denominators.

Express your final answer in lowest term.

3.

Let's have some examples.

Example#1
1. 1 3 (1) (3) 3
x = =
2 5 (2) (5) 10
Let's multiply the numerators so here we have 1/2 the numerator is 1 and then the

denominator is 2 after that multiply the numerators and the denominators. We need

to simply our answer into a lowest term.

1 and 3 is your numerators and 2 and 5 is your denominator so first let's multiply the

numerators.

1 x 3 is 3 then 2 x 5 is 10.

We need to check if the fraction is already in lowest term.

For now our product is already in lowest term the final answer for the example

number 1 will be 3/10.

Example#2
2. 1 6
invisible 1 6 x = = 3
2 2
1

We have 6 x 1/2. (How we can answer this there is no denominator?)

(Always remember
We have a whole number 6 so automatically it have a invisible 1.

that if you see a whole number into a given its automatically have a invisible 1
into a denominator.)
Let's follow the steps we have 6 x 1 that will give you 6 right? And then 1 x 2 will give

you 2.

As you can see 6 over 2 can be simplified or six divided by two is equal 3.

The final answer for our Example number 2 will be 3.

Example#3 divisor 6 quotient

4 )27
3. 3 27 3 -
9 x = = 6 24
1 4 4 4 3 remainder
invisible 1
We have 9 x 3/4 so we have here a whole number 9 and proper fraction 3/4. How we can

(Always remember that if you see a whole number into a given its
answer this?

automatically have a invisible 1 into a denominator. So you have here your invisible 1.)
Let's follow the steps. So you can multiply the numerators 9 x 3 that will give you 27. And then 1 x

(We need to remember that in any operation of fractions always express

4 will give you 4.

your answer into a mixed number if the answer is improper fraction.)

So we need to divide 27 into 4. (Always remember if you divide, the quotient will be your

whole number and the divisor will be your denominator and then the remainder will be the
numerator.)
Therefore the answer will be 6 and 3 over 4.
Example#4 quotient 7

9 7 63 7 8 ) 63
+
1 +
1 -
4.2 x3 = = = = 7
8 56
x 4 x
2 4 2 8 divisor
remainder 7
We have a mixed number into a mixed number so we will need to multiply. First we need to convert

each mixed number into improper fraction. So our step will be multiply and addition.

You have 4 x 2 that will give you 8 + 1 equal 9 so copy the denominator 4 so you have 9/4 . For our

next step.

We have 3 x 2 that will give 6 + 1 equal 7 then copy the denominator 2 and for now you have 7/2.

For our final answer you need to multiply the numerator so you have 9 x 7 that will give you 63 and

(Always remember that if you divide, the

then 4 x 2 will give you 8. So here we have 63/8.

quotient will be the whole number and the divisor will be your denominator and the
remainder will be your numerator.)
For our correct answer you have the whole number 7 and 7 over 8.
Example#5
1 1 3 3 1
5. = =
x x
2 3 5 30 10

We have here 3 fractions so this is possible you may encounter. But still though its 3 fractions that we

encounter. The rules are always be the same.

We need to multiply the numerators so you have here 1 x1 that will give you 1. Then 1 x 3 that is 3.

Then again 1 x 1 will give you 1 then 1 x 3 will give you 3 over 2 x 3 that is 6. then 6 x 5 that will give you

30.

Let's simplify so the numerator and denominator are both divisible by 3.

We can express this fraction in lowest terms.

The final answer will be 1 over 10.
