1.

From a creative cinematic viewpoint, why was it better that a production of The Lord of
the Rings using human actors rather than simple animation did not take place until the 21st
century?

I think that from a cinematic perspective The Lord Of The Rings was better off using
human actors rather than animation because the live action gave a sort of real feel to the
story.

2. How does the use of simple animation tend to affect the presentation of a story? For
instance, Baksi first presented an animated film version of The Lord of the Rings in 1978.
How did his use of animation affect the story? What advantages can you think of for using
simple animation in filming some stories?

Simple animation can present a film as more of a cartoon rather than a film with a serious
plot. However Baksi did make an animation that was successful in captivating the audience
that was little kids. I don't see any little kid reading the full trilogy over watching a cartoon
about it.

3. Based on what you have learned in this unit, which do you think is best for your situation:
to read the book first and then see the movie? Or to see the movie first and then read the
book? Why is this choice best for you?

I always try to read the book before the movie. However, if I am presented with a movie
that I have watched before that also had a book written about it I will try to read the book
as soon as possible. It's just fun.
4. From Sam’s point of view, who was Gollum and what was his motive for helping the
hobbits? From Frodo’s point of view, who was Gollum?

To Sam, Gollum is only trying to help them so that he can steal the one ring for himself. To
Frodo, Gollum just wants to help them.

5. Give an example mentioned in this unit where the director, Peter Jackson, changed the
nature of a conflict in the story.

I'll give a few.

Cutting out Tom Bombadil

Cutting Barrow-Wights and Barrow-Down

Replacing Glorfindel with Arwen

Changing the attitudes of the characters

Shrinking the scale of the war of the Ring

Small changes to various events and details
