PROFESSOR: Angie Caro

STUDENT: Cristian Mateo Avella Williams- 201720458

Objectives

● To recognize quantifiers used with countable and uncountable nouns.

● To practice quantifiers in examples.
● To give more information about how much or how many of an item you are talking
about.
● To be able to identify the rules for regular and irregular verbs with exceptions.

about recipes, etc.).

Presentation

Dear student,

In this guide, we will be discussing quantifiers, as well as count and non-count nouns. The
main idea is that once you've completed this guide, you'll be able to describe and provide
additional details about how much or how many of a particular object you're discussing.
Furthermore, you will learn how to distinguish between singular and plural nouns. You'll
also become familiar with some regular and irregular nouns exceptions.

Let me know if you have any questions!

1.1 Initial reflection

Let’s put into practice what you already know:

Please answer the following questions. Make sure to use “There are/There is”.

→ How many restaurants are there in your city?

______There are 100 restaurants in mi city_______
___________________________________________________________________
→ Which one is your favorite and why?
______My favorite restaurant is a ramen restaurant, oriental
food._____________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________
→ Which food did you eat the most when you were a kid? Do you still eat it?
_______Rice and beans is what I ate the most as a
child._______________________________________________________________

1.2 What is a count noun?

A count noun is a person, place, thing, animal, or even idea that can be given a
numerical number. For example, an apple is a count noun because you can count how
many apples you have.

Ex: I have five apples!

Other count nouns include bananas, people, buildings, dogs, cats, trees, etc.
Some items seem countable but be careful! For example, dollars, pesos, and coins can
be counted, but the word “money” is a non-count non. We cannot say “I have twenty
money.” The key to identifying a count noun is if you can make it plural.

Change the following to their plural form:

Monkey ___Monkeys______________________________________________
Trip__________Trips___________________________________________
Suitcase ___Suitcases______________________________________________
Pencil______Pencils_____________________________________________
1.3 What is a non-count noun?
A non-count noun is a person, place, thing animal, or idea that cannot be given a
numerical number. Things like grains, liquids, gases, and abstract ideas are considered
non-count nouns. It would be very difficult to count water or vapor because the
particles are too small to see. In this case, we talk about quantity through containers,
packages, cups of measurement, weight, volume, and more. As with the previous
section, the easiest way to identify a non-count noun is whether you can make it plural.
If you cannot, then it is a non-count noun. Ex: Water cannot become waters.

How would you describe the following non-count nouns using a type of measurement?
(cup, liter, bag)

A cup of water

A liter of juice

A bag of rice

1.4 Identifying Plural and Singular Nouns

Now, let’s review the rules to form SINGULAR REGULAR Nouns and IRREGULAR
Nouns.

Let’s check what you know!

Choose the correct plural noun to fill in the blank in the sentence.

Three __Sheep____ grazed in the meadow.

A. Sheep

B. Sheeps

C. Sheepen
Below is a very helpful chart…

Here are some videos to review the rules to form SINGULAR REGULAR nouns and
IRREGULAR Nouns are their plural forms.

1.3 What is a quantifier?

A quantifier is a word that generally goes before a noun to express the quantity of an
object, such as a bit of chocolate. For large quantities, we can use a lot, much, and
many. For smaller quantities, we use a little, a bit, and a few. There are even
quantifiers for undefined numbers like some and any.

There are 3 main types of quantifiers.

1. Quantifiers that are used with countable nouns.
2. Quantifiers that are used with uncountable nouns.
3. Quantifiers that are used with either countable nouns or uncountable nouns.
(see the Venn Diagram below. For even more examples, check out the chart on the last
page).
Examples:
 There are some books on the desk.
 He has more friends than his sister.
 How much money do you have?
 There is a large quantity of fish in this river.
 He has only a few dollars.
