Presentation
Dear student,
In this guide, we will be discussing quantifiers, as well as count and non-count nouns. The
main idea is that once you've completed this guide, you'll be able to describe and provide
additional details about how much or how many of a particular object you're discussing.
Furthermore, you will learn how to distinguish between singular and plural nouns. You'll
also become familiar with some regular and irregular nouns exceptions.
Please answer the following questions. Make sure to use “There are/There is”.
A count noun is a person, place, thing, animal, or even idea that can be given a
numerical number. For example, an apple is a count noun because you can count how
many apples you have.
Other count nouns include bananas, people, buildings, dogs, cats, trees, etc.
Some items seem countable but be careful! For example, dollars, pesos, and coins can
be counted, but the word “money” is a non-count non. We cannot say “I have twenty
money.” The key to identifying a count noun is if you can make it plural.

1.3 What is a non-count noun?
A non-count noun is a person, place, thing animal, or idea that cannot be given a
numerical number. Things like grains, liquids, gases, and abstract ideas are considered
non-count nouns. It would be very difficult to count water or vapor because the
particles are too small to see. In this case, we talk about quantity through containers,
packages, cups of measurement, weight, volume, and more. As with the previous
section, the easiest way to identify a non-count noun is whether you can make it plural.
If you cannot, then it is a non-count noun. Ex: Water cannot become waters.
How would you describe the following non-count nouns using a type of measurement?
(cup, liter, bag)
A cup of water
A liter of juice
A bag of rice
