AQUEDUCT @ KM 41.

535 OF GNSS MAIN CANAL

ACROSS MOGAMURERU

Introduction

Hydraulic particulars of GNSS Phase-II main canal from KM 40.640 to Km 44.890

was running in banking with maximum bed filling of 7.97m and the same reach was

approved vide CE,CDO Letter No CE/CDO/CD1/DEE4/EPC/GNSS/ MC/467/07

Dated.07-12-2009. An Aqueduct @ Km41.535 at Magameru stream (MFD:2387.4

cumecs&CA:894.19sqKm) with 0.15m loss of head was proposed in the above

approval.

Hence, the design proposals of Mogameru Aqueduct( from Km41.160 to

Km42.120) at Km. 41.535 on GNSS main Canal to CE,CDO for approval with

CE(P),Kadapa Inspection report with recommendation dated 04-10-2021(already

furnished earlier)and equivalent discharge canal section(bed width 30.0m) with

Concrete walls will be proposed due to non availability of loss of head in the upstream

of aqueduct 160m length(KM41.000 TO KM 41.600 ) and Down stream of aqueduct

480 m length(KM42.120 TO KM 42.600 )with suitable transitions to safe guard canal

system where in the canal was running in banking with maximum bed filling varying

2.0m to 4.00m.

The site survey and design of Aueduct @Km41.535 is prepared based on

the actual site condition. The salient features of design are as detailed below.

M.F. Discharge

M.F.D of the vagu worked out by Dicken’s formula 2387 cumecs with C.A. of

894.19 Sq.km. The MFL of the stream is +193.700(D/S 100m)

Canal Vent Way in Trough

single vents of 22.4 x 5.150m are proposed as vent way (RCC open Trough with

side walls) for the above canal discharge as per joint inspection report issued by

CE/CDO and Advisor (designs) where in it concluded that the proposed aqueduct with

single open trough with 70% of width at half supply depth of canal(as per IS Code IS

7784) “i.e” 22.40m trough width duly minimizing perimeter of trough (which may result
minimizing the cost of structure)may be suitable for above mentioned reach keeping in

view of loss of head available in the approved Hydraulic particulars, site conditions and

hydraulic design of proposed structure.

Drain Vent Way @ Crossing

55 spans of 16.000m C/C of pier/Abutment are proposed for the drain. The max.

straight portion length of the Aqueduct is 880m proposed as the alignment with

series of closed curves which is nearly close to the required length of the linear

water way at crossing and is proposed in such a way that the more than 2.0m

depth of bed filling at the entry and exit of the structure is about 4.0m. At end of

the spans, on either side, ended with upstream and down stream abutments with

suitable transitions are proposed. Vent way for drain and supply channel is

proposed between the banks rounded around the abutment. 100% of the Lacey’s

wetted perimeter is worked out to 234.52 m and however the bed width proposed

between the banks is about 880m.

Super Structure

The Super Structure is proposed as a RCC open trough with sidewalls and

supported by 7nos longitudinal beams proposed along span and end supported

by end diaphragm wall . The RCC cross beam, longitudinal beams and end

diaphragm beam structurally acted together and supported the entire super

structure and transmitted the the load to sub structure through bearings and the

super structure is designed as a flexural beam and slab system to transmit

DL+LL spanning from pier to pier/Abutment. The RCC beams are designed as

simply supported (longitudinally) in between pier to pier/abutment. The foot

bridge is proposed both sides over the all along trough side walls to allowing

inspecting team visit and open trough is prosed to carry the canal discharge

through it. The 3d trough analysis is also done with STAAD PRO software duly

taking the above loads for all extreme condition of loading into consideration with

suitable boundary conditions for cross verification of structural analysis of super

structure.

RCC Trough over vagu portion is proposed as single vent open

trough of 22.40 x 5.150m for the canal discharge as per expert committee

recommendation. A span(C/C of Abutment/Pier to Pier) of 16.00m is considered

for designing the super structure. The thickness of bottom slab member is

proposed as 55 cms. The thickness of side vertical wall members is proposed as

50 cms. 40mm thick sealing coat is proposed on bottom member inside the box.

50mm thick wearing coat is proposed on top member of the box for the carriage

way portion. The RCC trough shall be in RCC M30 Grade with HYSD bars. (Fe

415) conforming to IS 1786. The open aqueduct trough supported by 2 nos end

longitudinal beams with rib 800x2000mm de & 5 nos of mibble longitudinal

beams with rib 640mm x2000mm and all longitudinal beams ends are supported

with end diaphragm wall with rib 800mmx2100mmand one cross beam with rib

500x1500 proposed in middle of span to tie all longitudinal beams together and

carrying wind loads equally.

Abutments

The foundation and the body wall of the abutment/ piers shall be in C.C. M25

Grade. With suitable Reinforcement is proposed on both the faces.

Multi trustle Pier

The stability of the RCC Multi trustle Pier(7 nos of 1.8m dia) with pier cap

(2.3mx1.50m) is proposed, designed with M 30 grade and checked for water in

canal and with foot path live load and wind load and also for canal empty

condition. The pier is checked for various combinations of loads with and without

wind and water load conditions. The Multi trustle Pier with pier cap is proposed

in R.C.C. M30 Grade with required reinforcement. Piers are proposed in 4 types

with variation of foundation level (“i.e”+185.500,+184.000,+182.000,+180.000 )as

well as variation of soils in the middle portion where the soils are poor. In this

portion pier is proposed Multi trustle Pier with raft foundation as it’s foundation

for SBC varying from 23.00T/sq m to 27.00T/sq.m.

and the same is designed in RCC M30 grade duly checking the same for

punching and two way shear actions. Each individual pile at different locations is

again verified for its maximum compression load to check with the loads carrying

capacity duly considering the overall moments on pier in both the directions.

Transitions

In the transition portion, RCC retaining walls are proposed for a length of 30.000

m on U/S and 30.000 D/S side walls at canal junction to vertical near trough

since the canal section is to be negotiated to the trough dimensions.

Expansion joint with PVC water stop is proposed between the above 2

portions and the same shall be provided for bed and side slopes. Expansion joint
with PVC water stop shall also be proposed between toe slab of C.R. wall & floor

slab (apron) of transition.

Cut offs

The U/S cutoff and D/S cutoff in CC M15 grade are taken below scour level at

the end of the apron for canal.

Bed Blocks

300mm thick Bed blocks are to be proposed in VRCC M35 grade over abutments

& piers. The reinforcement in the bed blocks shall be proposed as per the codal

provision.

Bearings

7 nos in a row (x 2 lines on each pier cap) Neoprene Elastomeric bearings of

size 800x400x96mm of with RCC pedestals(2300x1200x204mm) in CC M35

grade are proposed over bed block on pier and abutment.

Bed pitching & Side revetment

300mm bed pitching is proposed on U/S & D/S side for the entire portion

between banks for drain. For banking Side revetment with pointing is proposed

on either side for certain length with same thickness to protect against flood

waters.
Toe wall

Toe walls designed for sloping surcharge of 2:1 rear slope to avoid damage of

canal section in bed filling portion which is proposed with 4.0m bed filling at the

end of the structure on U/s and D/S side. The walls are proposed in M15 with

40mm MSA upto 1.2m bed filling on either side.
