SUBJECT : Math – Grade 7

LESSON : Polynomials
DURATION : 1 hour
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the lesson, the FSUU Learners are expected to learn on how to:
1. Interpret the meaning of n a where n is a positive integer (M7AL-llc-2);
2. Classify algebraic expressions which are polynomials according to degree and number of terms (M7AL-lld-1);
and
3. Perform one’s responsibilities with dedication and integrity and inspire others to work hard and reach their
goals.

(Assess prior knowledge, “Algebraic Expression”.
identify misconceptions, rouse
interest to the new topic) To easy recall the topic, then let us play this game.
The game is entitled “The Magic Number”.
Note: No need to submit your answer.

This is the instruction:

To determine the magic number, follow the
steps below. Write the result for each step in the
second column. In step 6, you will find out the
magic number. Repeat the activity using other
numbers and write the result for each step in the
third and fourth column, respectively.
STEPS TRI TRI TRI
AL 1 AL 2 AL 3
1. Think of a
positive integer.
2. Multiply the
number by 2.
3. Add 6.
4. Divide by 2.
5. Subtract the
original number
in Step 1.
6. The magic
number is

In a sheet of paper, write your possible answers of

the Magic Number.

Then ask yourself these questions:

What is the magic number?
Why is it that I arrive with the same number
even if I changed my initial number?
Will the magic number be the same for all positive
integers? Why?

Did you enjoy the game?
Are you now ready to learn new things such as the
Laws of Exponents?

Explore Are you familiar with these pictures? Pictures

to use process skills)
What are these? What do they mean?

misconceptions) 2. Polynomials

And here are more examples:

Product Rule

25 • 23 = (2 • 2 • 2 • 2• 2)(2 • 2 • 2)

=2•2•2•2•2•2•2•2

= 28

Thus, 25 • 23 = 28.

Quotient Rule

(y + 3)5 / (y + 3)6 = (y + 3)5 ÷ (y + 36)6

= (y + 3)5-1

= (y + 3)-1

= 1 / (y + 3)

Thus, (y + 3)5 / (y + 3)6 = 1 / (y + 3).

Power Rule

[(2 + b)2]3 = (2 + b)6

Power of a Product Rule

[(2x2)(3y4)]3 = (2x2)2(3y4)2

= (2^2 x^4) (3^2y^8)

= (4x4)(9y8)

= 36x^4y^8

Thus, [(2x^2)(3y^4)]^2 = 36x^4y^8.

Power of a Fraction Rule

(x-4)3 = x-12= 1 / x12

Zero Exponent

(x–4)0 =1

Negative Exponent

x-4 = 1 / x4
Are you now ready to learn  what are
Polynomials?
If so, then let us first understand the key terms:
Polynomial is a special type of algebraic
expression that contains a specific number of
terms each of which is of the
form axn or bxmyn, where a and b are real numbers,
and m and n are whole numbers.
