I – SUBJECT: ENGINE COOLING FAN DIAGNOSTICS

This Technical Note is to be used to check whether it is necessary to replace the fan hub.
If a faulty fan hub is detected, print off the fan hub certificate.

This certificate must be attached to the Warranty Claim for acceptance to be considered.

Cooling function

The engine fan has a viscous drive (slip type fan with silicone oil) with electric engagement and stop. Fan
engagement and stop are by means of a solenoid valve controlled by the engine control unit (EMS).
This type of fan adapts the speed of rotation of the propeller in accordance with real cooling needs.
The speed of rotation of the fan depends on several parameters:
– Coolant temperature (1).
– Boost air temperature (2).
– Engine ECU temperature (3).
– Pneumatic system (4).
– Air conditioning system (5).
– Retarder (6).

The system requesting the highest engine speed (revs) always takes priority.
This priority is delivered by the engine control unit which controls the fan solenoid valve in
order to vary the speed of rotation.
On starting the engine, the fan is always 100% engaged.
Its speed decreases progressively after a few minutes of use.

II – 2. Fault active/inactive

– Switch on the ignition.

– In the diagnostic tool select "Other Diagnostics
(DXi)".

– Start the vehicle.

– Select "Variable-drive fan Diagnostics".

– Select "Initiation of the test".

– Correct the active faults linked to the cooling

function before starting the test.

II – 3. Fan hub diagnostics

The engine temperature should be between 70°C and 85°C (get the engine up to temperature y
driving for 10 to 15 minutes).
The test begins with the engine started.
– Increase the engine speed (1600 rpm) using the idle speed regulator or the accelerator pedal.

In the event of a malfunction (1) (the curve

exceeds the green zone):
1
– Carry out the last checks indicated by the
diagnostic tool (check the continuity of the
wires and motor earths, the voltage and the
condition of the drive belt, the free rotation of
the helix, etc.) before replacing the hub.
– Confirm to record the certificate in the
diagnostic tool.

The After-Sales certificate has been recorded in

the diagnostic tool database.
No Warranty Claims will be accepted without
this certificate.

A mere screenshot will not suffice and is of

no value to the Renault Trucks Warranty
Division.

– Attach this certificate to the Warranty Claim.

• Location of the file: "My Documents", "Variable-drive fan Diagnostics".
• File format: "Fabrication number§date§time.zip".
− Print off a copy of the certificate for your own Warranty Claim archive records.

2
In the certificate:
– List all of the fan mechanical faults (2)
generated during the test.
– List the engine ECU faults (3).

If a fault associated with the cooling function

other than that related to the fan hub is listed
on the certificate, the Warranty Claim will be 3
rejected.

– Example of test without malfunction.
