Social Media Tiktok Research (Chapter 1)
INTRODUCTION
With today's circumstances, when adolescents spend most of their time staring at their
devices, browsing and using any social media platform to occupy themselves, the stigma of
mental health has grown. And the purpose of this research is to increase awareness about the
effects of social media apps, with a particular focus on Tiktok, which is popular among young
people.
Tiktok was founded in September 2016 by Zhang Yiming, the founder of Bytedance, a
Chinese multinational internet technology business located in Beijing. It is a social networking
program that allows users to record a 15 to 60-second video clip. The youth are the ones who
have been drawn to Tiktok the most. The most important question, however, is how it affects the
mental health of young people.
Tiktok's main benefit is that it is a terrific source of fun. Users of Tiktok can dance, act,
and broaden their social circle. Tiktok is an interactive platform where users create innovative
challenges and dances for others to replicate and enjoy. And it consistently delivers entertaining
stuff. It's a fantastic software for keeping yourself engaged, especially amid the stress of the
pandemic. However, despite Tiktok's numerous advantages, there are certain drawbacks to
consider. While the app may be used to share optimism, it can also be used as a forum for
bullying, which can have a detrimental influence on everyone involved mental health and lead to
life-threatening events or decisions.
As a result, it is critical to comprehend how TikTok has played a vital part in the lives of
today's youth. Parents must monitor what their children do and view in this app. This study seeks
to assist TikTok users, which may help psychologists and parents understand why it has such a
large impact on the younger generation in the future and to determine how it may affect the
mental health of our younger generation
Neither the pandemic nor the issue of TikTok toxicity appear to be going away very soon.
This is why it is critical for persons who are battling with their mental health to seek the
appropriate guidance on how to take care of themselves. Young people are currently locked in a
predicament in which they feel lonely while simultaneously being more exposed than ever before
to the judgment of peers and strangers all across the community. Studies shows that like other
social media, it is associated with increased anxiety and depression. And it is especially
2
dangerous for children and teenagers already suffering from mental health problems, specifically
depression and eating disorders.

and how it affects their mental well being to our fellow generation
