The use of wireless sensor networks is surprisingly increasing day by day and it has a strong presence in our
homes and workplaces. This concept is also used in health sector. A WBAN comprises of multiple sensor nodes,
capable of sampling, processing, & communicating vital signs or many environmental features. These sensors
are placed on the human body as tiny patches or hidden in users’ clothes allowing proper health monitoring in
their own environment .The main use of WBAN in health sector is to monitor patients suffering from chronic
diseases and provide them proper medication in timely manner.
A patient’s health is remotely monitored using wireless technology. A set of sensing devices are located around
human body. These devices are further connected to sensors that monitor vital body movements and
parameters. This provides the patient mobility, ease and comfort by not physically connecting to number of
medical equipment.
Any Patient properly equipped with any wireless body area network need not be physically present at the
physician’s place for continuous observation. A wireless body sensor network can be adequate for any
emergency case, as it automatically sends data about patient health condition so that physician can prepare for
the treatment immediately.
We normally use biosensors for continuous monitoring of physiological parameters of human body like blood
pressure, glucose levels and collecting the data for further analysis. Wearable body area system allows a
patient to closely monitor changes in his vital signs and provide feedback to help maintain a desired health
status.
If these systems are integrated into a telemedical system, these systems can also alert the respective physician
whenever life-threatening changes occur in the human body. The examples can be a simple pulse monitors,
activity monitors, and portable Holter monitors etc.
We will discuss number of ongoing projects such as CodeBlue, MobiHealth, and iSIM which have contributed a
lot in making a patient’s life comfortable using WBAN system.
OBJECTIVES:
METHODOLOGY:
In our project we will use both simulative and hardware approaches to acquire a developed solution. We
will deal with the energy requirements in Body Area Network (BAN), the cooperative communication
between the sensors, the understanding of body signal processing and then implementation on both
software and hardware level.
FEATURES:
The fulfillment of the objectives of our project which deals with health monitoring using ECG
(Electrocardiography) and other systems capable of communicating health monitoring information.
APPLICATIONS:
Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) provide communication solutions to the healthcare systems. Health
monitoring, telemedicine, military, interactive entertainment, and portable audio/video systems are some of
the applications where WBANs are being used. In our project we would deal with the implementation of WBAN
in heart ECG monitoring. The sensor nodes which are installed on human body can protect large number of
sudden deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases. This is because the necessary treatment preparation can be
made in advance as the information about irregularities of the heart is received while monitoring the health
status of the patient using WBAN.
