INTRODUCTION

What is a cell? Are they necessary in our life? Does every living thing have them? In this

report we are going to answer all of these questions in order to fully understand this topic.

What are their functions? There are a lot of questions which require an answer.

Something important to always keep on mind is that cells are the smallest unit of life and

are often referred as the building blocks of life.

All living things are made of cells and their main purpose is to organize. Each set of cells

have a different purpose.

In biology, cells are the basic structure of all organisms. Fun fact is that cells are made of

cells!

DISCOVERY AND CELL THEORY

The invention of the microscope (16th century) led to the discovery of cells by Hooke.

Robert Hooke was an English scientist who using a microscope, was the first one to

visualize a micro-organism; he named them cells because they reminded him of the cells or

rooms in monasteries. This discovery led to the development of the cell theory. Supposedly,

there are three parts of the cell theory in which they state that

1. All organisms are made up of cells.

2. Cells are the basic unit of life.

3. Cells come from preexisting cells which multiplied.

But all those three parts are from the classical cell theory and because technology has

advanced, so does the cell theory because of new discoveries which are:

1. DNA is passed between cells during cell division.

2. Cells of all organisms within similar species are mostly the same structurally and

chemically.

3. Energy flow occurs within cells.

With the rapid growth of molecular biology, it became possible to maintain, grow and

manipulate cells outside the living organisms.

VARIATION IN CELL

First of all, we should ask ourselves “Why don’t cells get bigger instead of remaining small

and multiplying? What limits cell size?” Most organisms, even large ones, have

microscopic cells. To carry out life processes a cell must be able to quickly pass out

substances into and out of the cell. Simple, like for example, pass nutrients and oxygen into

the cell and waste products out of the cell.

Cells with different functions often have different shapes. An example could be the job of

the nerve cell is to carry messages to other cells. The white blood cell has the job of

destroying bacteria and other pathogens.

There is a basic cell structure present in many BUT not all living cells: the nucleus. It is a

structure in the cytoplasm that is surrounded by a membrane and contains DNA. Based on
5

whether they have it or not, there are two types of cells which are the prokaryotic and

eukaryotic cells.

Prokaryotic cells. - They are cells with no nucleus instead the DNA is in the cytoplasm and

they are found in single-cell organisms such as bacterium. Prokaryotes were the first type

of organisms to evolve and are still the most common organisms today.

Eukaryotic cells. - They have a nucleus. They are larger than prokaryotic cells and they are

found in single-cell organisms and multicellular organisms. They range from fungi to

people. Besides a nucleus, they have organelles which is a structure within the cytoplasm

that performs a specific job.

CONCLUSION

My conclusion for this report will be that cell definitely is one of the most important units

of life. There exist many different cells such as stem cells, bone cells, blood cells, muscle

cells, fat, skin, nerve cells, pancreatic and cancer cells.

They all perform a job; they all do have a function. And as time goes by, we evolve and so

they.
