When I heard backer before I thought that it is about the negative side of politics
but I was wrong because backer doesn't work in politics only it works outside politics
too. The backer thing works inside a company, organization, politics, or in any group of
people with common work. There is a different reason why people let others have them
as a backer. It can be power, a debt of gratitude, and so on. The backer system works
effectively mostly in the relatives of the person inside a campaign.
In our municipal hall, they offer a summer job for all students which is very helpful
mostly to those students who need work for the next school year. One summer year, I
heard from my untie that there’s a job that I can get in our municipal hall since she
worked there before. She told me everything that I need to prepare if I am going to get
that job. Since I wanted to have work to help my mom and to lessen our expenses every
new school year I decided to take the chance and opportunity. I prepared all of my
documents and went there and passed all I have. After a few weeks, I didn’t receive any
call or message saying that I was accepted or not, so, I decided to go there to clarify
things. When I get in there one employee said that they are not accepting applicants
anymore because the job had already started. I think my qualifications are not enough
which is why I failed. I decided to go back to our home but while I am walking I saw a
student from our school that have an I.D. proof that she’s working in that place. That
person is a troublemaker in our school, grades aren’t higher than mine, has been
recorded in counseling but is accepted in that kind of work. Instead of going home, I
decided to go to my friend’s boyfriend’s shop and tell her what happened to me and the
phrase that marked in my mind is “Ganiyan talaga diyan palakasan ng backer. Ako nga
nag apply dati diyan hindi rin natanggap tapos yung mga kilala nating walang
qualification sa ganiyang trabaho, natanggap.” After I heard that from her I didn’t force
myself to get the job.
Nevertheless, that’s how Filipinos live as human beings. We can say that the
backer system is around the world but the reason why people do that is different from
the reasons of Filipinos. Filipinos have extreme personalism characteristics, such as if
my mom has a sense of gratitude to a person (sense of gratitude is one of the
characteristics of a Filipino too). I see that I have a sense of gratitude for that person
too. To pay back, when they come for a favor I have to give it to that person. That’s one
of the reasons why people do the backer system sometimes. There are a lot of reasons
why people use the backer system. It can be because of emotional and material support
to the family, because of being relative, it’ll give them power, and so on.
Being an ordinary person who has no connection, power, and is not in a high
living status backer system isn’t fair. Maybe to those people that use this system, it is
their advantage little they don't know there is a person who has eagerness because of
what they are doing. The thing that I realized on that day is how hard it is to get a job in
a government organization or even in others if you don’t have a backer. The backer
system became a common word but in real life, it shouldn’t work. This system gives
fairness to ordinary people who have no connection and live in fairness to others.
