Activity 2.2 A Midsummer Night’s Dream
1. What is the importance of the forest as the scene of action for most of the play?
One reason the forest is an important setting in A Midsummer Night's Dream is that the forest
creates a dark, wild, mysterious atmosphere in which the magical elements of Shakespeare's plot
2. What is the importance of the forest as the scene of action for most of the play?
Shakespeare made the night a focal point of chaos. It's dark, the characters see but they don't see,
they hear but they don't see, and they end up assuming a lot. The enmity between the royal fairies
helps further the plot, as King Oberon decides to teach Titania a "lesson" by smearing flower
Helena is to blame because she was the one who ran after Demetrius who was following Hermia.
Oberon saw this and felt bad for her, so he told Puck the fairy to use the love flower on
Demetrius so he can fall in love with Helena. This is bad because the instructions weren’t clear
enough, and that resulted in the love spell being casted on Lysander instead of Demetrius,
causing confusion.
