CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1Historical Background

Dhulikhel is the administrative centre of Kavrepalanchowk District, Nepal. At the time of

the 2011 Nepal census it had a population of 16,263 people in 3,291 households. Two
major highway B.P. Highway and Arniko Highway passes through Dhulikhel. Araniko
Highway connects Kathmandu, Nepal's capital city with Tibet's border town of Kodari.
Dhulikhel is located at the Eastern rim of Kathmandu Valley, south of the Himalayas at
1550m above sea level and is situated 30 km southeast of Kathmandu and 74 km
southwest of Kodari. The people in the village are Newars, Brahmin, Chhettri, Tamang
and Dalit. Drinking water in Dhulikhel is some of the best water in Nepal. It was made
with the Help of the German NGO, German Technical Cooperation.

Dhulikhel has been for centuries an important trading centre on the commercial route
linking Nepal to Tibet. Since time immemorial, people of Nepal travel to Tibet to bring
home salt and gold. Likewise, the Tibetans every year with their flocks of sheep enter
into Nepal during Dashain, the greatest Hindu festival. In those days, a whole day walk
from Kathmandu to Dhulikhel was comfortable for Tibet trippers with easily available of
food and water at Dhulikhel at the evening for overnight stay. After adjoining with Tibet
by motorable road in 1965, Dhulikhel got a face lift and developed as a tourist
destination. Dhulikhel is an ideal station to stop for overnight stay while going to Tibet
and coming back to Kathmandu.

There are numerous temples in the town depicting traditional and old Newari
craftsmanship. These are places of worship for local people. The core area of Dhulikhel
has interesting narrow cobbled streets and lanes embedded with number of Hindu Shrines

1
and a few Buddhist Stupa. In the centre of the old town is the Narayan Temple with its
yellow metal roofs. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna whose birthday is celebrated in
August. Alongside is the Harisiddhi Temple. Both the temples are adorned with profuese
wood carvings and fronted by two Garudas. Bhagwati Temple is situated at the top of the
western part of the town. The GaukhureshworMahadev Temple is on the east of the town
near Tundikhel Recreation Park. Further up hill, is located the Bhagwati (Kali) Temple,
which is a pagoda.

1.2 Statement of the problem

Nepal has several cultural heritage sites listed in the UNESCO. However, due to the lack
of dissemination of heritage information, tourists and sometimes even nearby city-
dwellers are not well informed about it. In many cases, everyone in Nepal including some
surrounding people around the main cultural or world heritages is not even aware of the
real stories of the heritages. It is difficult for travelers when they cannot get the desired
information from people around and the websites. Tourists and new travelers even the
students who come for the study tour from Nepal have problems with the knowledge of
the proper directions and the stories behind the cultural heritages. Lack of timely
information may also lead to the change in decisions of visiting the cultural heritages; this
eventually lessens the number of visitors to the heritage sites. Due to the shortage of full
information, some tourists are even trapped in the places or sometimes even robbed by
local people.

1.3 Objective of the study

When we study in each subject, then it has its own purpose and objectives of the study.
According to my field work, it has following objectives:
i. To study the trend of the tourist arrival in Dhulikhel.
ii. To analysis the Role of culture heritage to increase trend of arrival of tourist in
Dhulikhel.
iii. To discuss the need to preserve our cultural heritage.
iv. To analyze the growth of tourism in Dhulikhel.

2
1.4 Research question
1. Do heritage sites have impacts on tourism?
2. Do you know about economic benefits from tourism?
3. What is the current situation of Dhulikhel in tourism sector?
4. Do you think tourism has help to promote your occupational success?
5. Has tourism played a negative role in sustaining the traditional norms and values
of your society?

1.5 Literature review

Role of culture heritage for tourism sector is not a new topic in the area of tourism
history. There have been various discussions and debates among tourism development
experts and other government authorities on how to handle the balancing need of
maintaining tourist visit along with the tourism development objective of earning
reasonable profits from heritage and culture. Different literatures have been studied
regarding tourism in Nepal and its impact in national economy. Some relevant literature
such as dissertation research article, research books etc. have been studied which make
researcher easy to understand and analyze the impact of tourism in Nepal's economy.

Nepal has the cultural and religious heritage as it has the combination of elements to
attract the attention of visitors and provoke a visit by them. This combination represents
the supply of Nepal tourist market. Nepal is not only a geological mosaic but also a
human mosaic. Tourism plays an indeterminate role in Nepal's economy. It has become a
pillar for economic development in recent years.

3
1.6 Theoretical framework
According to Webster new international dictionary, 1975, tourism is "Traveling for
Recreation." Similarly the term tourism was first defined as the sum total of operations,
mainly of economic nature which directly relate to the entry, stay and movement of
foreigners inside and outside a certain country, city or region. The function of tourism is
to import currency from foreign resources into country. Its impact is what tourist
expenditure can do to the hotelkeepers.

The objective of Role of Culture heritage for tourism sectors in Dhulikhel is to examine
the significance regarding of the population on the basis of sample drawn from the
population. This test has been conducted on the various ratios related with the tourism
arrival in Dhulikhel.
Generally, following steps are followed for the Test of Hypothesis.
 Computing the Test Statistic of tourism arrival.
 Fixing the Level of Significance of tourist.

H4: There is significant relationship between role of cultural heritage and developed
socio-environment.

5
1.8 Research methodology
Tourism Development in Dhulikhel is one of the important works. So there is a need of
extensive study for its important to manage. The main objective of this report is to carry
out comparative study regarding to tourist arrival in Dhulikhel. Also the study is mainly
focused to find out the trend of tourist arrival, stay in Dhulikhel. Other objectives of the
study. For this the detailed methodology adopted is discussed under the following
headings: Research design, nature and sources of data, data collection techniques and
data analysis tools.

1.8.1 Research Design

“A research design is the arrangement of conditions for collection and analysis of data in
a manner that aims to combine relevance to the research purpose with economy in
procedure." Research design is the plan, structure and strategy of customer service
conceived so as to obtain answers to research questions. Descriptive and analytical
research design for the study has been applied as it gets two aspects. At first, it has the
description of the situation and secondly, it has the interpretation of data.

1.8.2 Fieldwork Procedure

The project report is prepared for the partial fulfillment of requirement for the degree of
Bachelor of Business Administration-Banking and insurance (BBA-BI).. The project
report is concerned with the comparative study of the tourism. The project report is
prepared to analyze Role of culture heritage for tourism sector in Dhulikhel by air, land
and to increase of the tourist in the Dhulikhel to prepare the project. So that I selected
Dhulikhel place, which is situated in the Dhulikhel.

1.8.3 Source of Data

For the preparation of this report different kinds of books are followed. In this report, all
the data collected are primary data and secondary data. Almost all the data has been
collected form published annual reports, brochures etc.
Primary Data Source:

6
Primary source of data is questionnaires, observation, interviewing personally regarding
the subject. But my field work doesn’t require the primary data so I haven’t used primary
data.
Secondary Data Source:
In this study the main source of data is secondary which are collected from pre-publisher
data sources and its website. Secondary data have been gathered on such aspect as
number of Staffs, Area of Trekking, Rafting, religious, and transportation facilities etc.
The unpublished official records maintained in the organization are the main sources of
data. The next source of data is personal observation. The organization has been visited
many times in connection with preparation of this study and some important facts and
figures are gathered through this source.
1.8.4 Data Collection Methods
The following procedures are followed to collect the data and to prepare the report as
well, they were really very helpful.
 Observation Method
 Interview Method
 Questionnaire Method
 Other Methods Observation
Looking by the own eyes provides true and fair information about everything so, I had
made this Observation as a procedure to collect the primary data. Office of Dhulikhel
Tourism board was located at the heart of Dhulikhel, i.e. this has made an easy access to
the staffs. While looking at the working environment I had found that the environment
was really quite and peaceful. Even staffs do not unnecessarily gossiped in spare time.
Peace environment really helps the employee to concentrate on their work which of
course increases the efficiency of the staff. Through the means of observation I noticed
that the relationship between the entire co-ordinate was so nice and cordial. If one got
problem then other instantly help him/her. I am very much impressed with their
coordination in the job.
 Interview

7
Asking question verbally simply is an interview. Interview is also an important procedure
to collect the data. Language is the best means of expressing their views and idea. I had
asked question to important staff that is somehow the team leader. Their facial gesture
also expresses their feelings regarding their jobs.
This was very important to collect information from those who do not have education
background. To collect information from the low level staff like cleaner, guard, canteen
staff etc interview method was used.

 Questionnaire
For this method, firstly I had prepared the list of simple objective question. That question
was printed in multiple copies and I hand over them to the every single staff of the office.
After completing them the staff returned them to me.
Getting personally one by one is not possible due to time constraints so this method was
used to collect the data. This method was simple and easy. It was also less time
consuming then other method. Whole data was collected through this procedure.
1.8.5 Data processing tools and Techniques
The information regarding to this study are mainly collected from the office of DTB from
the published annual reports relating to the tourist arrival. Also the Internet is used to find
some literature and other necessary data regarding this study. A prospectus published by
DTB is much more useful to collect the data regarding Introduction, Aim and Objectives,
Promotion function.

1.8.6 Statistical Tools Used

Simple statistical tools like simple bar graph, pie chart, give etc. the numerical data was
simply converted to a percentage. And they were diagrammatically represented. The
reason behind choosing simple tools is just because to make the report easily understood
by the people. Representing data by complicated formula and tools can be too hard to
understand and confusing too which the ordinary people do not show any interest. That’s
why to make easy access to everyone used simple statistical tools was used .

8
1.9 Significance of the study

The purpose of the study of this field work was not solely for the exam only. But also
with the motive to help the organization for the effective management of the recording
system of tourist and area of tourism development in that organization. To some extent
this report might help the organization to know their weakness in the field of tourist
management and to correct the deviation in that matter.

No country can achieve rapid economic growth without development of tourism sector. It
plays vital role in economic development of any country. This study provides in brief
knowledge about tourism, socio-economic effect of tourism in Dhulikhel, policies related
to the tourism sector and problems facing by this area in tourism sector.

of multiple regression analysis.

The linear equation is:

Role of cultural heritage = 2.195+0.2.1E+0.070M+0.173S-0.023T

Where

E= economic development

M= marketing

S= socio-environment

T= tourist arrival
