Lydia 31
cl870
poem by Leconte de Lisle

Op. 4, no.~- Dedicated_ to Madame Marie Trelat. Published by G. Hartmann, 1871; Choudens, 1877; Hamclle, 1887 ;
first coll~cuon, no_. 8. First_ performance, Societe nationale de musique, May 18, 1872, Marie Trelat, mezzo-soprano.
The Lydian mode is found tn the song, with the raised fourth note of the scale. This is the first time Faure set a poem of
Leconte de Lisle, a Parnassian poet. The Parnassians were a group of poets who turned away from Romantic excess ~nd
reverted to the formal aspects of ancient Greece. Faure changed words, presumably to improve the vocal flow of the line:
"Chanter sur tcs levres en fleur" was altered to "Chanter sur ta levre en fleur." In the first verse, Faure omits the bracket':d
words in his s~tting: "Et sur_ ton col frais et plus blanc [Que le lait,) roule ctincelant." Instead, he inserts a melodic line tn
the accompaniment, removing the comparison of "white" and "milk."

Lydia, sur tes roses joues, Lydia, upon your pink chulu,
Et sur ton col frais ct si blanc And upon your neck, so cool and so white,
[Que le lait,] roulc etincelanc There rolls down, glituring,
L' or fluidc que cu denoues. Th, fluid go/,un hair that you untie.
Le jour qui luic est le mcilleur. Th, day that is shining is the bm:
Oublions l'etemellc tombc, Ltt ,is forget the eternal grave,
Laissc tes baiscrs de colombc Ltt your dov, lik, kisses
Chanter sur ca levee en fleur. Sing upon your flowering lips.
Un lys cache repand sans cesse A hidden lily unuasingly spreads
Unc odcur divine en ton sein: A divine sunt in your bosom:
Les deliccs, cornmc un cssaim, Delights like a swarm
Sortcnt de toi, jcune Decsse! Emanate from you, young Goddess!

Jc t'aimc et mcurs, 6 mes amours! J love you and die, o my lovt!

Mon amc en baiscrs m'cst ravic. My soul is ravished from mt in kisses.
0 Lydia, rcnds-moi la vie, 0 Lydia, rtstor, my lift to mt,
Que je puissc mourir toujours! May J di, forever!
