Amigurami Tips and Tricks:
 To avoid gaps in your finished product, be sure you’re crocheting with a very tight
stitch. If you normally crochet loosely, you may want to use a smaller hook size
to tighten your stitches up. *Note: Using a smaller hook size will make your
finished product smaller than intended.
 Poly-fil will break down over time, especially if the item is played with. For that
reason, you want to stuff your items as tight as you can get them without
stretching out your stitches too much.
 When crocheting in the round, it’s very helpful to use stitch markers to keep track
of your starting stitch in each round.
 When you have pieces to sew on, like ears or antlers or snouts, it helps to use
straight pins to hold them in place. This way you can position your pieces and
move them around until you like the way it looks before sewing them on.

Abbreviations:
ch: chain
sc: single crochet
inc: increase (2 single crochets in one loop)
dec: decrease (pull yarn through loop, pull yarn through second loop, yarn over and pull
through all loops)
Materials needed:
Lion Brand Heartland yarn in:
Giraffe: Great Sand Dunes, Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon.

Monkey: Mammoth Cave and Great Basin.
Fox: Yosemite, Great Sand Dunes and Great Smokey Mountains.
Elephant: Mount Rainier and Great Smokey Mountains.
Zebra: Great Smokey Mountains, Katmai and Mount Rainier.
Koala: Grand Canyon, Acadia and Great Smokey Mountains.
Panda: Great Smokey Mountains and Acadia.
Hippo: Glacier Bay and Mount Rainier.
Any worsted weight yarn will work, but if you have to substitute the brand of yarn, I
would go with Caron Simply Soft or Red Heart Soft because they have a similar feel to
the Lion Brand Heartland yarn.
G (4mm) crochet hook
18mm safety eyes
Yarn needle
Poly-fil
This pattern is worked “in-the-round”, and stitches are worked through both loops unless
otherwise noted.

Giraffe Cuddle Critter
By The Left-Handed Crocheter
Using the recommended yarn and hook size, this finished pattern is approximately 14
inches tall.

Head:
With Great Sand Dunes, ch 3. Sl st to first ch to create circle. (Instead, you can perform
the “magic circle” if you’d like.)
Row 1: ch 1, 10 sc inside of circle. (10 stitches)
Row 2: *Inc in first stitch, sc in next stitch, repeat from * around. (15 stitches)
Row 3: *Inc in first stitch, sc in next 2 stitches, repeat from * around. (20 stitches)
Rows 12-19: Sc in each stitch around. (60 stitches)
Row 20: *Dec in first 2 stitches, sc in next 10 stitches, repeat from * around. (55
stitches)
Row 21: *Dec in first 2 stitches, sc in next 9 stitches, repeat from * around. (50 stitches)

Tie off. Stuff tight with poly-fil.
Snout:
With Grand Canyon, ch. 7.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in the next 4 across. Work 3 sc’s into the last ch,
then turn and sc on the other side, working 2 sc’s into the last ch. (15 stitches)
Row 2: Work 2 sc’s in the first stitch, sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc’s in each of the next 3
stitches, sc in next 5 stitches, 2 sc’s in last stitch. (20 stitches)
Row 3: Work 2 sc’s in each of the first 2 stitches, sc in next 7 stitches, 2 sc’s in each of
the next 3 stitches, sc in next 7 stitches, 2 sc’s in last stitch. (26 stitches)
Row 4: Work 2 sc’s in each of the first 2 stitches, sc in next 10 stitches, 2 sc’s in each of
the next 3 stitches, sc in next 10 stitches, 2 sc’s in last stitch. (32 stitches)
Tie off. Stuff with poly-fil. Center on face and sew on, being sure to stuff more poly-fil in
before you finish it off. Attach safety eyes above snout.
Ears

Row 16: Sc in each stitch around. (15 stitches)
Tie off. Make two. Lay flat and fold in half. Position on top of head and sew on.
Horns:
With Grand Canyon, ch 3. Sl st to first ch to create circle. (Instead, you can perform the
“magic circle” if you’d like.)
Row 2: Inc in each stitch around. (10 stitches)
Row 6: *Dec in first 2 stitches, sc in next stitch, repeat from * around. (10 stitches)
Switch to Great Sand Dunes.

Row 7: In inside loops only, sc in each stitch around. (10 stitches)
Tie off. Stuff with poly-fil. Position on head, between ears, and sew on.
Legs:

Row 11: In inside loops only, *dec in first 2 stitches, sc in next 4 stitches, repeat from *
around. (25 stitches)
Stuff tight with poly-fil. Tie off first one. With second leg, don’t tie off. Continue on with
body.
Body:
With yarn still attached to second leg, ch 5.
Row 1: Attach to first leg, sc around leg (20 stitches), sc in each ch of ch 5 (5 stitches),
sc around other leg (20 stitches), sc in each ch on other side of ch 5 (5 stitches). (50
stitches total)

Tie off. Stuff tight with poly-fil. Position and sew head onto body. Before you sew the
last few stitches, stuff more poly-fil inside to reinforce the neck.
Arms:

Tie off. Make two. Stuff halfway with poly-fil. Position and sew on at row 23 of body.
Tail:
Tie off. Fold flat and sew onto back of body. Attach Grand Canyon yarn to end.
Big Spots:
With Bryce Canyon, ch 3. Sl st to first ch to create circle. (Instead, you can perform the
