Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the English 6 Self-Learning Module on Make a Stand based on


Informed Opinion!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed, and


reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st-century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active

EXPECTATIONS

This is your self-instructional learner module in English 6. All the


activities provided in this lesson will help you learn and understand: Make
a Stand based on Informed Opinion.

PRETEST

Directions: What will be your stand on the following opinions? Choose the
letter of the BEST answer.

1. In my opinion, child abuse may affect children’s growth.


A. Agree, a child who is being abused may have fear of socializing, or
sometimes they will be rude to other children.
B. Disagree, all children have their way of coping with the abuse done
to them.
C. Disagree, any form of abuse won’t have any effect on children.

2. I believe that to avoid conflicts in the family, consider the feelings and
opinions of one another.
A. Disagree, we should express our opinion no matter what.
B. Agree, we must be mindful of what we say towards our family
members.
C. Agree, we should always just agree with what others say.

3. I think every child should be taught how to think, not what to think.

A. Disagree, a child can’t think rightly on his/her own.

B. Disagree, a child should always follow the elderly.

C. Agree, elders should help a child develops his/her creativity and


critical thinking.

RECAP

Every opinion must be supported with evidence because


strong opinions may offend the reader, who may feel differently about the
issue or have a personal connection to the opposing view.

LESSON

When you are making a stand based on informed opinion it might be


agreeing or against it. Therefore, in making a stand you must consider the
following concepts or techniques on how to make a stand based on any issue.

1. Get straight to the point.

You must say directly what you want to say.

2. Avoid being bias.

You should be equal, not that you are not agreeing because you are
upset or you only want it.

3. Know your facts.

You must consider the truth, and also if it is right or wrong.

4. Be respectful in giving opinions.

You should still be polite in giving opinion so as not to offend someone.

Study the situation and analyze the opinion formed. Make a stand based on
the opinion.

Eliza is 11 yrs. old and 5th among


the ten children of Mang Dolpo and
Aling Iska. Her family lives beside
the riverbanks. Their source of living
is from the junk they collect. Eliza
works underpaid to Mrs. Dalia as a
vendor in the market.

OPINION:
I believe due to poverty, at an early age, Eliza is already working to help
her family.

POSSIBLE STAND
1. I agree with Eliza what she is doing, because being a good child, she
should help her parents to get out of poverty.
2. I don’t agree with what she is doing because every child has the right
to education. It is not the child’s obligation to work for the family.

Guided Practice
Let’s try a few items as a practice exercise. What will be your stand on the
following opinions? Choose the letter of the best answer.

1. I believe that a good father should not only provide for his family. He
must also take part in teaching his children what is right and wrong. He
should also encourage his children to do their best.

The answer is A. Both parents should help one another in disciplining their
children.

2. In my opinion, telling the truth without consideration can hurt


siblings’ feelings.

A. I agree because we can still be honest without hurting the feelings of


others.

B. I disagree because the truth should always prevail.

C. I disagree, we should always tell the truth even though it hurts.

The answer is A. We should always be careful about what we say because


we can never take back what we have spoken.

3. I believe that a mother loves her child when she doesn’t ask him/her
to do any household chores.

A. I agree because a mother is always kind to her child.

B. I agree because every mother must consider if her child wants to do


household chores or not.

C. I disagree, a mother who truly loves her child will teach him/her to
do household chores for him/her to be responsible and self-reliant.

The answer is C. A mother should teach her children to do household chores


because it teaches them many lifelong skills.

misunderstandings but it is resolved in good conversation. Although life is
