The Burden of Online vs Traditional Education

A reaction paper about Online vs Face-to-face education

According to Maricel Cuico (2020), the concept of education expanded in the 16 th

century where childhood requires time to study. In addition, schools for children were

created and developed as learning environments. Furthermore, the first educational

system in the Philippines was established in 1863 where students had traditional

classes. On the contrary of traditional classes, which is online classes, it has been

controversial whether to use this as an alternative mode of learning caused by the

COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, the greatest and first option for learning was traditional class.

Wherein unity and understanding by the means of queries were prevalent. On the other

hand, both students and teachers are affected because internet and devices such as

laptop may be a burden to them. As for teachers, many are not adapted with the

modern technology. As for students, submission of inputs in most cases were through

self-study. In addition, online education has been a burden for both students and

teachers. Wherein both have experienced difficulties.

My Reaction
When online class was declared as a mode of learning for the school year 2020-

2021, I had mixed reactions such as acceptance and disappointment. First, we all know

it was debated whether the school year should stop for a year. Specifically, the year

2020-2021. Second, the expression of grievance and anguish was prevalent knowing

that the mode of learning is online. Lastly, despite the mode of learning here in the

Philippines are modular or online, both still require a device such as a phone or laptop

and a stable internet connection to be able to keep up in terms of academic

performance and school requirements.

In conclusion, both are a hindrance. In accordance with our conversation,

between me and my former classmate, online is more recommendable because the

teachers teach it especially in private schools.

Unprivileged Students

Majority of the public-school students came from lower income families. As

stated, the students have to carry the burden because they do not have enough

resources such as a device especially a laptop, an internet connection, and an idealistic

environment. In fact, many does not possess these. Evidently, the use of data is not

enough knowing that the internet connection in the Philippines is not stable where

disconnections occur most of the time. Moreover, they do not have a choice unless they

want to skip the school year.

Privileged Students

Privilege students possess the resources such as an internet connection and a

device such as a laptop. However, it does not mean their internet connection is still

stable. Many are still encountering connectivity problems. Moreover, they do not have

an idealistic environment because we do not know what is happening to their lives.

Evidently, home is different from school.

My Response

Though I am a privileged student, it does not mean it is easy despite my mode of

learning which is online has been a year. However, if I must make a decision especially

if I am an unprivileged student, I have to accept it and adjust in spite of knowing that

education plays a vital role in our lives. Moreover, I would yearn that my mode of

learning should be online because it is easier. After all, health is wealth. We could not

risk our lives just for the sake of education. Likewise, I strongly disagree to skip the

school year because it is indeed obvious that it might take years for this pandemic to

end.
