What is Torrefaction?
 Advanced technology available today which provides an important green,

renewable energy source utilizing biomass and reducing emissions
 A thermo chemical process where various biomass feedstock are enhanced
through a mild form of pyrolysis at temperatures ranging from 200 °C - 320 °C
 The fundamental properties of the biomass feed stock are altered during the
process resulting in:
- Reduced mass – 25% reduction in mass- decreased transportation costs
- Increased Energy Density –approaching coal ~20 GJ/m3
- Hydrophobic – Torrefied product acquires hydrophobic properties. Allows for open
storage & transportation
 Torrefied biomass products when blended with fossil fuels will significantly
decrease emissions and reduce overall energy & operating costs

Konza Renewable Fuels is a cooperation of seven partners with its keystone experience rooted deep with a firm
commitment to research and development. The expertise that Konza brings is engineering, manufacturing,
industrial plant operation, research and development. business administration and networking . In 1946 TDC (core
partner) began work on their first heavy duty industrial dryer drum design. Their research and development has led
to over 50 patents issued worldwide. Some of the more notable innovations and technologies to come from their
R&D are: Rotary Material Handling, fully Automated Exhaust Gas recycle, Airless Drying and Thermal oxidation.
Developing new technologies was a natural extension of the core partners established and proven competencies.
This valuable industrial process equipment experience has led to the design of the first 100,000 ton / year
